Importance of the Guru

Then Srila Prabhupada spoke. Given the number of guests present, he explained first why he occupied his impressive throne-like seat. He said there were two reasons; the vyasasana means the seat of Vyasa, which the representative of Vyasa is allowed to sit on; and vyasa-puja, the worship offered to the representative of Vyasa on his birthday.

He went on to lucidly describe the importance of the guru. "Now I must explain my position because in these days, a person being worshi

Remembering - Hladini Devi Mataji

Sunday, October 3, is the anniversary of the day on which Hladini devi dasi was brutally gunned down by an extra-judicial firing squad in war-torn Liberia in western Africa. The death squad arrived at the Hare Krishna temple in the capital city of Monrovia in the early morning hours, and ordered the devotees to come out. Seven devotees, five men and two women, exited the temple and filed into the waiting jeep. They were driven a short distance to the Sturton Bridge, where the devotees were forc

REAL DETACHMENT

A Krishna conscious person well knows that everything belongs to Krishna, and thus he is always free from feelings of personal possession. As such, he has no hankering for anything on his own personal account. He knows how to accept things in favor of Krishna Consciousness and how reject things unfavorable to krishna Consciousness.

Good Character Saves a Soul

2514761005?profile=original

While speaking earlier this week with a boy who's recently taken up bhakti-yoga, I realized how important purity and Vaisnava character are for distributing Srila Prabhupada's books and inspiring people to take up devotional service.

The boy was named Anchal. He had recently come to New Zealand from India, supposedly to further his studies but actually to meet his guru. He related to me how four months after his arrival here he had met a brahmacari distributing books on the street in Auckland. He

No better guide than Srila Prabhupada

The devotees held kirtana in the temple room in anticipation of the moment when His Divine Grace would come down and join them. It was a rare opportunity to be able to worship him in person on the day that we all revere more than any other of the year. At 11:00 a.m. they all leaped, danced and shouted as he took his place on the half-finished marble vyasasana. The GBCs and sannyasis stepped forward to wash his feet while Sampath Kumar Bhattacarya and his Bang

Many kinds of Surrender

Many kinds of Surrender

Since there are many kinds of surrender, there are many degrees of completeness because some types of surrender are more total than others. By and large they all entail abandonment of certain designations: of birth and parentage, of career and material possessions, of mind, of the body and its senses, of doctrines and concepts. Abandonment of delusion followed by submission to the Divine, to the Will of the Father, is the process of surrender. Such a surrender, when it is

Vrindavan Kartika Parikrama and Festival

Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir Kartika Parikrama Schedule

Now that Janmastami and Radhastami Festivals have finished, thoughts turn
towards Kartika. The Puranas glorify the month of Kartika as very special for
making spiritual advancement, and the best place to be in Kartika is Sri Braja
Dham. In fact this month is known as Damodar since in the middle of this month,
the Lord performed His very enchanting Damodar Lila. Kartika month also
represents Radharani, and devotees perform special austerities to

GAURANGA Trademark!

GAURANGA Trademark!

"In the modern world, trademarks are very common. And they are protected. The trademark for marketing the holy name is the causeless mercy of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord Gauranga. In this Age of Kali, it is not possible to achieve the pure holy name without chanting the names of the Pancha-Tattva prior to chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.

Whoever wants to market the holy name must be a sincere follower of the Lord and distribute the name under Gauranga's brand name, or proce

Six Kinds of Surrender

Six Kinds of Surrender
In the material world, because of intense lust and desire for enjoyment, one becomes implicated in sinful life more and more (kama esa krodha esa rajo-guna-samudbhavah). Therefore the quality of fear is one of the aspects of material life (ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca). But if one becomes Krsna conscious, the process of devotional service, sravanam kirtanam [SB 7.5.23], diminishes one's polluted life of material existence, and one is purified and protected by the Supreme

Symptoms of Kali Yuga

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada, Sri Guru and Gauranga.

I received this inspirational story recently and would like to explain a little bit with some of the relevant instructions from Srimad Bhagavatam.

When Yudhishtira Maharaj was ruling this planet, Bhima used to help in solving problems of people, hence people whoever has any questions/problems would come to Bhima and ask him for help. One day, one citizen came and told Bh

Hari Hari
Please accept my humble obeisance...All glories to Srila Prabhupada...

Dear devotees, it is almost a month passed since Harinam tour finished so now we would like to come out with some interesting data and make conclusions. This year we had the largest and "craziest" Harinam tour so far. Such a venture in this area no one has even tried to do and we also thought at the beginning that we started „to bite too much of a cake“, but somehow we all managed with Krishna's grace ...

Way to krsna Consciousness

Way to krsna Consciousness

"A scholarly brahmana, expert in all subjects of Vedic knowledge, is unfit to become a spiritual master without being a Vaisnava, or expert in the science of Krsna consciousness. But a person born in a family of a lower caste can become a spiritual master if he is a Vaisnava, or Krsna conscious." (Padma Purana)
The problems of material existence -- birth, old age, disease and death -- cannot be counteracted by accumulation of wealth and economic development. In many part
