Hare Krishna.

It is with profound sorrow and deep reverence that we share the news that His Holiness Dhirasanta Dasa Goswami, a beloved disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, has departed from this mortal world and entered the eternal pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna.

His Holiness left his physical body today, surrounded by the continuous chanting of the holy names of the Lord, in an atmosphere of peace, devotion, and the loving association of his disciples and wel

The mystery of Radha, the female energy of God, had both fascinated and eluded me. After all I had experienced, after all I had read, after all the sadhus I had met, nothing had prepared me for the hidden truth of yoga’s greatest mystery: the mystery of bhakti, or devotion. And now I was learning that the keeper of this mystery was Radha. For the first time it began to dawn on me that these saints of Vrindavan had penetrated into the deepest, most confidential aspect of the sp

From Back to Godhead

When Charles asked his son and daughter-in-law a Hare Krishna couple to move in with him, he knew he’d have to adapt, but his reward was more than he could ever imagine.

Charles was born in 1917. He grew into a man of courage and principles, serving his country in the U.S. Navy for twenty years and then the Civil Service for twenty more. Assigned to a submarine fleet during World War II, he saw his share of pain and suffering and, like many veterans, came to value a safe, s

Ekadashi means eleventh day of waxing or waning moon. Therefore, two Ekadashis fall in every month. Usually on Ekadashis, the devotees undertake fasting. Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi observed on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Moon (shukla-paksha) in the month of Jyeshtha (May-June) is called Nirjala Ekadashi because on that day the observer of the vrata should not drink even water. Since the vrata observed is in the month of Jyeshtha, it is known as Jyeshtha-shukla Ekadashi as well. Th

Ekadahsi is one of the regular celebrations in the Vaishnava calendar. It is observed eleven days after the full moon and eleven days after the new moon of every month. Even in the thirteenth, or leap, month, called adhika-masa, or purusottama-masa, which comes every three years, during which no other festivals are celebrated, Ekadasi is observed. Ekadasi is known as the day of Lord Hari and is said to be the mother of devotion. Keeping the fast on Ekadasi is one of the sixty-four items of devo

The Story of Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi

Once Bhimasena, the younger brother of Maharaja Yudhisthira, asked the great sage Shrila Vyasadeva, the grandfather of the Pandavas, if it is possible to return to the spiritual world without having observed all the rules and regulations of the Ekadasi fasts.
Bhimasena then spoke as follows, “Oh greatly intelligent and learned grandfather, my brother Yudhisthira, my dear mother Kunti, and my beloved wife Draupadi, as well as Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, fast completely on each Ekadasi and stric

Every year the North American office of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust publishes an “Art Calendar” with all the most important Vaisnava dates for North America. This year, as in past years, we noted under Pandava-nirjala Ekadasi that one should observe a “total fast, even from water, if you have broken Ekadasi.” It has been pointed out to us that the only instruction Srila Prabhupada gave concerning breaking Ekadasi is that if one does so inadvertently one should observe Ekadasi fasting the next

During the hottest season (northern hemisphere), if one can perform upavasa without water one is performing a great feat.

One may take only caranamrta and acamana water.
Bhima requested one vrata day by which he could obtain the fruits of all the other days of vrata that he was incapable of observing.
Vyasadeva advised him to follow this difficult vrata.

One should worship the Lord in the evening by bathing him in milk.
On the dvadasi one should give full pots of water to brahmanas and feed th

From her childhood Princess Sachi devi, the daughter of King Naresh Narayana of Bengal, showed unalloyed devotion to Lord Sri Krishna. She even refused to marry on account of her genuine attachment to Krishna. After her father’s demise she ruled the kingdom. But she soon renounced it to find a bona fide spiritual master.

Princess Sachi devi met Sri Haridasa Pandit, a leading guru in Vrndavana, and began performing devout bhajana to Govindaji. Although she became frail from under-eating, she wou

Sri Ganga-puja, also known as Sri Ganga-dushara (she who removes inauspiciousness), appears in the month of Jyestha (May/June) on the 10th day of Sukla-paksa, or the waxing fortnight of the full moon. On this day, Maharaja Bhagiratha’s desire of bringing Ganga to this mortal world was finally fulfilled as the sacred river descended from Lord Siva’s blessed head at Mount Kailasa. The River Ganga then flowed through the Himalayas behind Maharaja Bhagiratha’s chariot and entered Jahna Rsi’s asrama

This is literally the “birthday or descent of mother Ganges – Ganga Ma”. Throughout India this festival lasts ten days beginning on the Amavasya (dark moon night) and going through to the dasami tithi (tenth phase of the Moon, the day before Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi)

Ganga is supposed to be the daughter of the Himalayas and the goddess Mena. According to the Puranas, the heavenly Ganga flows from Vishnu’s toe. Ganga sometimes assumed a human form. In one such appearance, she married King Shantan

Getting Grounded by Bhaktimarga Swami

I met a Catholic priest from St. Louis at the airport while Nityananda, my assistant, was dropping off my two large suitcases full of costumes for the bus tour drama. I asked the priest how I address him and he said, “Father.”

“People call me Swami,” I expressed.

“You are going where?”

“Off to Pittsburg, then West Virginia.”

“On a mission?”

“Yes, I’m joining a team of forty young folks aged 18 to 25, a bus trip throughout the U.S. and Canada, working on a drama and mantra meditation.”

Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana was born in the early part of the 18th century (1720-1790) in a village near Remuna, Balasore District of Orissa. Even though he was the son of a ‘vaishya’ (farmer), in his youth he received a very thorough education in ‘Sanskrit’, rhetoric, logic and Vaishnava scripture.

He accepted ‘sannyasa’ into the ‘Madhwa-sampradaya’ at a very young age, and stayed at Jagannatha Puri. He became a renowned scholar and travelled around India to all the holy places.

There is no greater blessing than having a sadhu by your side. And that in sum and substance is my story for today. I was fortunate to travel with my big spiritual brother, Bhakti Brnga Govinda Swami, a monk from Tennessee. I have written about him in the past, mentioning that he personally spent time with Elvis, who used to baby-sit him as a kid, but more important to me, was his guardianship to me when I was just a new bhakta. He is one of the first persons I met who was Krishna Conscious.
