As always, it’s a pleasure to speak here, at India’s peak of scientific learning and research. Tonight we will discuss a controversial subject: “Technology--Helpful or Hurtful?” The verdict? All depends on our consciousness. The ancient spiritual texts of India tell us that a person’s internal state translates into external action. How someone uses things, f

World Views: Vedic vs. Western

World Views: Vedic vs. Western By Sadaputa DasaIn the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, European scholars and scientists began to come in contact with the culture of India. Many were impressed by the antiquity of Vedic civilization and the deep spiritual and material knowledge contained in the Vedic literature. But other European intellectuals were dismayed ny these developments. For example, in 1825 the British scholar John Bentley wrote of his conflict with the scientist John Pla

Devotion

This is a story of a Bengali saint of Vrindavan. I heard it on TV during the discourse of Bhagavata by Shri Gaurav Krishna Goswamiji long back. The saint worshipped his deity - Thakurji in his small room. Everyday he would collect Mahaprasad and offer to his Thakurji. Only then he would accept any food. What is Mahaprasad? The prasad of Banke Bihariji in Vrindavan is taken by the great saints. The left over is the Mahaprasad. One day he came to know that due to some reasons the Mahaprasad's availia

Vacika - Loud Chanting

Taken from Art of Chanting Hare Krsna by Mahanidhi SwamiVacika - loud chanting that all can hear, as in kirtana, is a hundred times more beneficial than uparsu japa. The Caitanya-bhagavata tells how the caste brahmanas once challenged Haridasa to prove which scripture sanctioned his loud chanting. Haridasa Thakura replied, "Nowhere in the scriptures is loud chanting of the holy name condemned. In fact, the Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.34.17 says: yan-nama grhnann akhildn srotfn atmanam eva ca sadyah pun

Story about Bhaktas(Bhakta Chokamela)

Bhakta ChokhamelaGod created man. When he created man, he did not show any difference. The prince and the pauper, the rich and the poor, the man and the woman, the wise and the foolish all are alike for him. To understand the uniform love of God, we are taught to do Surya Namaskar early in the morning. The sun shines equally on man, woman, flower and rock.Unfortunately, being entwined in the mundane world, we go farther off from God and God’s message. We do not know God manifests Himself in ever

The Test (A short story)

The Test

November, 1982

“Hare Krishna. What do you make of this?”

Ramanand Prabhu, President of the revered Radhika-Krishna Temple, Vrindavan, pushed the letter across the table towards Laxmi Dasi.

The young devotee read the letter carefully and looked up in surprise. “I-I don’t

understand Prabhuji…”

“Nor do I,” said Ramanand Prabhu and shook his head wearily. He had recently taken up the post of the Temple President and was already beginning to feel the pressure of the responsibilities that went with

Student, Paris, in July of 1973: Srila Prabhupada, Christianity’s sanction of meat-eating is based on the view that lower species of life do not have a soul like the human being’s.Srila Prabhupada: That is foolishness. First of all, we have to understand the evidence of the soul’s presence within the body. Then we can see whether the human being has a soul and the cow does not. What are the different characteristics of the cow and the man? If we find a difference in characteristics, then we can

Bhakti is often misunderstood. Such misunderstanding may be of different kinds. Those who are very much addicted to the pleasures of the flesh are liable to mistake such pleasure as love of God. Most people nowadays are anxious to acquire wealth and fame and other good things of this world. They often profess appreciation for the religion of love that was preached by Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya. Mahaprabhu, as is well known, was opposed to barren asceticism. This attitude of His is much liked by ai

Letter from Srila Prabhupada 6/1/72

"Chanting japa should be done early in the morning with full concentration preferably during the Brahma Muhurta time. Concentrate fully on the sound vibration of the mantra, pronouncing each name distinctly and gradually your speed in chanting will increase naturally. Do not worry so much about chanting fast, most important is the hearing."

Thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street2. The soul is one ten thousandth the tip of the hair in size3. The individual soul is tiny4. One should be selfless5. Etc.Also we may come in cont
