My Memories of Srila Prabhupada
At the beginning of the class on March 11th, after chanting the Sanskrit sloka responsively with the devotees, Srila Prabhupada exhorted all to chant the Sanskrit verse. I felt pleased and encouraged by this, because I always took pleasure in chanting the verse. Later in the same lecture, Srila Prabhupada said, "I am very glad that you European and American boys have taken so much trouble to come here," which made me feel happy. However, he continued, "But you'll be benefited if you come here and try to take lessons from Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He taught Sanatana Goswami." From this I took it that Srila Prabhupada was cautioning us not to misuse our time or act frivolously in Mayapura. I also wondered how we should go about taking lessons from Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The obvious answer, which I did not immediately realize, was that hearing from Srila Prabhupada was the same as hearing from Lord Caitanya.
In another lecture, on March 13th, he made the point that the material world is so contaminated that even Lord Brahma had to purify himself by austerities for many hundreds of years. But Lord Caitanya is so kind that even though compared with Brahma we are very, very fallen, still He gives us a little formula:
harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha
Near the end of his lecture on Gaura Purnima, Srila Prabhupada said, "Don't forget that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead." I remember being surprised by that statement, thinking, "How could we possibly forget that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead?" A few minutes later I was awakened from semi-consciousness by the devotees joining Srila Prabhupada in chanting: sri-krsna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda sri-advaita gadadhara srivasadi-gaura-bhakta-vrnda. Then Srila Prabhupada said, "This will make your life perfect. Thank you very much," and ended the lecture to a great roar of appreciation.
