The lady was lusty and wanted sons.
Little did she know that her children
would be demons, and that the Lord Himself
would have to come and kill them.

It was evening. The sun was setting on the forest cottage of the great sage Kasyapa Muni. As the sage sat in ecstatic trance, meditating on Lord Krishna deep within his heart, his beautiful wife Diti approached him in a lusty mood.

“O learned one,” she said, “Cupid is forcibly distressing me with his arrows tonight, just as a mad elephant troubles a ba

Housing Committee

2514931962?profile=originalBy His Holiness Radhanatha Swami

The Housing Committee tries to get the congregation to help devotees who need housing. Once Rohini Kumar and Radha Sakhi, his wife, were married, the congregation raised enough money, more than 15,000 US dollars to buy them an apartment. The congregation bought the house, put it completely in their name, and then arranged an employment for Rohini Kumar. The idea is that a person who was for many years a renunciant, if he wants to get married, he shouldn’t need to

Attachment makes us blind – blind to everything other than the object of our attachment. The Bhagavad-gita (01.01) indicates this blinding power of attachment through its starting question, its only verse spoken by the blind Dhritarashtra. His biased enquiry about the fate of his forces reveals that his blindness went far deeper than the physical. He couldn’t see the obvious reality: the inevitable futility of defying the will of the Supreme. Hoping to avoid the unavoidable and attain the unatta

2514932089?profile=original

The sacred city of Puri is one of India’s most popular attractions for pilgrims and tourists. Situated on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, this city of 80,000 is most famous for its colossal temple of Jagannatha, the Lord of the universe. Overlooking Puri from atop Nila Hill, the temple’s 215-foot solid-stone tower is visible for miles around. The original structure disappeared long ago through a series of reconstructions, the present design dating from the first century A.D. The location of the

Materialism and Detachment

“One should not give up anything which can be utilized in the service of the Lord. For instance, we are using many machines for the advancement of our present Krishna consciousness movement, machines like typewriters, dictaphones, tape recorders, microphones and airplanes. Sometimes people ask us, ‘Why are you utilizing material products if you condemn the advancement of material civilization?’ But actually we do not condemn. We simply ask people to do whatever they are doing in Krishna consciou

The Form of God: fact or fancy?

2514932010?profile=original

Very often the readers of BACK TO GODHEAD become puzzled when they see a picture of Lord Krishna. Usually they have been exposed only to Western religious philosophy, which hints that God is a person—the eternal father of every living entity—but gives scanty information about His form. For this reason many people think God is formless or void. But by using a little logic we can easily understand that if God is our eternal father, He must have form. Our fathers are persons with form. And if we co

Simple living High thinking

“The cause of it [the world's malady] is spiritual. We are suffering from having sold our souls to the pursuit of an objective which is both spiritually wrong and practically unobtainable. We have to reconsider our objective and change it. And until we do this, we shall not have peace, either amongst ourselves or within each of us. ”
Arnold Toynbee
London Observer
25 October 1972

The reason for Mr. Toynbee’s remark is that, at present, governmental plans for social development around the world rely

Thought Of The Day

Prabhupada: Consciousness is the symptom of atma. Because the atma is within your body, therefore your consciousness is there. Now, because the atma is within the body, if I pinch or if you pinch my body, I feel pains and pleasures. As soon as the atma is not there, it will be cut with a chopper, there is no protest. So, that atma is present within this body, that is understood by the presence of consciousness. Just like we are here in this room, but this light is the reflection of the sunshine.

How to Start a Community?

How to start a community? With a small group of 10 to 15 people and regular association. Every member of the small group has to have some responsibility for others. Responsibility means that they have some responsibility towards others. Just like in the Chowpatty temple’s Mentor Program, every person is responsible for someone else. Each one teach one. We are actually responsible for one another. Personal relationships are based on feeling for others and being responsible for them. This is how t
