National Seva Day

On Sunday 21^st November hundreds of volunteers from the Bhaktivedana Manor community came together for National Seva Day (Service – Good deeds for others). In partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council and Hertsmere Forum of Faiths, religious communities worked together to serve the local community.

The inspiration came from Mitzvah Day, a Jewish led initiative to volunteer their time to good causes. Some 5,000 faith volunteers from 50 different Hindu organisations across the UK

Srila Prabhupada went down to preside over an initiation ceremony, in which he awarded first initiation to ten men, and second initiation to nine, all mainly boys from Lokanatha Swami's party. Although they are enthusiastic in kirtana, it was apparent that they are "raw recruits" and need a lot of training. As we were chanting, I looked at the picture of Srila Prabhupada on thewall, painted from a photograph of him from 1966, and I thought of how hecame to the Western world to give us the holy name. The below article appeared in Times of India paper a couple days ago,and a Prabhupananuga website--check it out and keep in mind the last email I sent out regarding why, and how Prabhupada teaches us to learn simple living as a daily way of life. Its all tied together. If we don't learn it we will choke ourselves to death on our own pollution.

Sadly, many of us keep convincing ourselves, “Someday I’ll be happy.” We tell ourselves ‘I’ll be happy when I will be a president, when I will be doing so and so service, get a particular mobile phone’ etc. We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, then another, then another, on and on and on we go with our wish list.

During the walk we noticed some men gathered around a roadside food stall eating bhel puris. Srila Prabhupada explained that the small, golf ball-sized snacks are filled with dal and are especially offered to Radha-Vallabha.

A new English devotee, Bhakta Robin, expressed his appreciation of Srila Prabhupada's knowledge of cooking.

Prabhupada replied that right from his childhood, if somebody was preparing food, he would want to see how it was done.
