(Prayers to Sri Radha)



1. O queen, when will I hide the flute that You won from Lord Hari in the dice game, broke, and tossed to me?

2. O girl with the beautiful face, when, the hairs of my body standing up in ecstasy, will I fan You as You lay on a pastime bed of jasmine flowers in the temple of bliss of amorous love, smiling and conversing very sweetly with Your beloved?

3. O queen, O girl whose face is a blossoming lotus flower, O personification of shyness, when, Your two lotus feet exhausted by walking from the rendezvous, will You affectionately call this shameless person by name and engage her in massaging them?

4. O queen with my eyes and ears will I serve the nectar of Your words scented with the camphor of Your smile?

5. O pious one, when, picking flowers with Your sweet and crooked friends, You pretend to quarrel with the Lord of Your life and You angrily leave Him, will You fill me with boundless happiness?

6. O merciful one, when, because I feel shy before Your friends, will You take me to a cave in the king of mountains and there tutor me in the art of melodious singing?

7. O queen, when, because Your friends are too shy to act, will You hint that I should restring the favorite necklace, broken in Your pastimes?

8. O queen, when, after looking in all directions, will You take the chewed betel nuts from Your mouth and affectionately place them in mine?

9. I am Yours! I am Yours! I cannot live without You! O queen, please understand this and bring me to Your feet.

10. O restless-eyed girl, Your lake is the eternal home of You and Your beloved. My residence is there. There I stay.

11. O Lord, O nectar moon of Gokula, O Lord whose cheerful face is a lotus flower, O sweetly-smiling one, O Lord melting with compassion, so I may serve You both with love please lead me to the place where Your beloved enjoys loving pastimes with You.

12. My queen, even a drop of the beauty of the tip of whose lotus toenail the goddess of fortune is not able to attain, if You do not give charity to my eyes, then what is the use of my life, ablaze with a great forest-fire of sufferings?

13. For me somehow the present moment is flooded by a nectar ocean of many hopes. If You do not give me Your mercy, then of what use to me are this life, the land of Vraja, and Sri Krishna, the enemy of Baka?

14. O affectionate one, I pray that this Vilapa-kusumanjali (Handful of Flowers in the Form of a Lament), which, with much weeping to attain Your loving service, and with a heart burning with pain, I take from my chest and place at Your lotus feet, may give You a little pleasure.

Gita Govinda - Radha’s feelings of separation from Krsna

When Radha saw Krsna enjoying affectionate exchanges with all the cowherd maidens in the groves of Vrndavana, she became indignant because he had not acknowledged her eminence. She immediately departed for another part of the forest and hid herself inside a shady bower that resounded with the drone of bumblebees. When the sakhi saw Radha powerless to go to Krsna despite her being fervently desirous of his company, she described Radha’s condition to Govinda, who was himself inflicted physically and psychologically with transformations of intense amorous desire.

athagatam madhavam antarena
sakhim iyam viksya visada-mukam
visankamana ramitam kayapi
janardanam drstavad etad aha
Translation
When Radha saw her companion return without Madhava, her heart sank. Feeling apprehensive, Radha remained silent and began to conjecture, “Is Janardana enjoying love with another passionate woman?”

ramayati subhrsam kam api sudrsam khala-haladhara-sodare
kim aphalam avasam ciram iha virasam vada sakhi vitapodare
ramate yamuna-pulina vane
Translation
“The brother of Haladhara – that indiscriminate, ill-mannered uncouth rogue, Krsna – is definitely tightly embracing some woman with beautiful eyes and making love to her. So sakhi, tell me – how long shall I sit waiting in this bower of flowering vines in an unpleasant mood, completely devoid of rasa?”

nayatah sakhi nirdayo yadi sathas tvam duti kim duyase
svacchandam bahu-vallabhah sa ramate kim tatra te dusanam
pasyadya priya-sangamaya dayitasyakrsyamanam gunair
utkantharti-bharad iva sphutad idam cetah svayam yasyati
Translation
Sakhi – “O sakhi, Radha! He did not come.”
Radha – “If that merciless, cruel-hearted, two-faced cheater does not come, why should you be upset?”
Sakhi – “He has many beloveds and he freely enjoys amorous love with them without the slightest restraint.”
Radha – “What fault is that of yours? Look! Today my heart has been broken by the burden of intense eagerness. Being attracted by the qualities of my most beloved Sri Krsna, my heart will go to meet with him by itself.”

ripur iva sakhi-samvaso ’yam sikhiva himanilo
visam iva sudha-rasmir yasmin dunoti manogate
hrdayam adaye tasminn evam punar valate balat
kuvalaya-drsam vamah kamo nikama-nirankusah
Translation
“O sakhi, my heart feels the pleasing company of my friends to be like the association of enemies. The cool and gentle breeze seems like a sacrificial fire and the moonshine gives me pain as if it were poison. Nevertheless, my
heart is forcibly attached to him against my will. It is true that kama is always completely unbridled in dealing with impassioned young women who are as beautiful as the night-blooming water lily.”

badham vidhehi malayanila panca-bana
pranan grhana na grham punar asrayisye
kim te krtanta-bhagini ksamaya tarangair
angani sinca mama samyatu deha-dahah
Translation
“O Malaya breeze, give me pain! O archer with five arrows, you may steal my life-airs, but I will never go home! O Yamuna, you are the sister of Yama, the lord of death. So why should you forgive me? Sprinkle me with your waves so
that the burning distress of my body may be extinguished forever.”

Sri Radhe-Krsna's playful pastimes (vihara) - Kyon Nai



Kyon Nai was an appointed meeting place of the Divine Couple Sri Radha-Krsna. Once, Sri Krsna was waiting for Srimati Radhika here. Some of Srimati Radhika's friends had wanted to test Krsna's eagerness to meet with Her, so they had arrived early, and hidden Srimatiji in a nearby kunja. When He saw the sakhis Krsna asked eagerly, "Kyon na ai? - why has Kisoriji not come?" To increase His longing they answered: "Abhimanyu (Her husband) is home today and Jatila(Her Mother-in-law) and Kutila( Her Sister-in-law) are vigilantly keeping watch. She cannot leave the house, so there is no possibility of Her coming to see you."

This news distressed Krsna and it showed on His face. Pleased to see Him afflicted by separation from Srimatiji, the sakhis brought Her out from the kunja. In this way they arranged Her meeting with Krsna. Since Krsna asked the question Kyon na ai? here, the place was named Kyon Nai (Konai).

1. When, seeing my sincere and unwavering devotion to Sri Radha's lotus feet, a devotion filled with boundless love greater than the love He feels for His own devotees, will charming Krsna embrace me, take the betel nuts from His mouth and place them in my mouth, and place His own forest garland upon me?

2. When will Sri Radha, whose beauty is supremely wonderful, whose expert skill in amorous pastimes is very wonderful, whose splendid glory is very wonderful, whose playful movements are wonderful, whose sidelong glances are the greatest wonder of wonders, whose smile is wonderful and whose form is wonderful, give me the opportunity to engage in Her wonderfully sweet service?

3. O my queen, when will I say to You, "You threw away fear, shyness, glory, Your family's reputation and a host of other shackles in order to be with Him!" and when will You, bewildered, stuttering, and laughing, angrily reply, "when did I do that? When?"

4. O my queen, when will I see You smiling, Your form plunged into the nectar of transcendental mellows as dark Krsna speaks sweetly to You, holding Your silk garment and the blossoming vine of Your arm? When, Your body garlanded with its hairs standing up in ecstasy, will You, humming in agreement, glance at me?

5. The king of rasikas stays in Vrndavana forest. Resting on the breast of a beautiful gopi, He enjoys the pastimes of a playful teenager. He enjoys a festival of bowing down before His gopi friend. May He be merciful to me. May He place me at His beloved's nectar feet.

6. When will our queen, who is expert in all arts, and whom many gopi friends dress in splendid silk garments, a graceful bodice, wonderful ornaments, and glorious tilaka, scents, and flower garlands, allow us to enter the sweet festival of rasas?

7. When, our necks embraced by the great arms of our lover in the sweet and wonderful rasa-dance festival splendid with tinkling bracelets, anklets, and other ornaments, will we fix our eyes on the footprints of our queen?

8. My heart swims in the nectar lake of the descriptions of Lord Krsna. I decorate each day with the ornaments of worshipping Krsna and chanting the glories of His transcendental virtues. I love Krsna's dear devotees. I pray that Sri Radha, who loves Lord Krsna, the prince of the gopas, and considers Him more dear than life, may be pleased with me.

9. If I can attain confidential service to King Vrsabhanu's daughter, whose form is filled with the nectar of pure love, then how important are pious deeds to me? How important are the demigods? How important is Brahma? How important is Siva? How important is the struggle to meet the dear devotees of Lord Krsna?

10. O Radha, O goddess with a splendid moon face, doe eyes, beautiful nose, red lips, graceful smile, vine arms, graceful conchshell neck, regal-mountain breasts, slender waist, broad hips, banana-tree thighs, lotus feet, and moon toenails, when will I be able to worship You?

Story of Lord Krishna - SRIMAD BHAGAVATA by Krsna-Dwaipayana Vyasa

The Pastimes of Krsna during age of pauganda



1. When Lord Rama and Lord Krsna attained the age of pauganda [six to ten] while living in Vrndavana, the cowherd men allowed Them to take up the task of tending the cows. Engaging thus in the company of Their friends, the two boys rendered the land of Vrndavana most auspicious by imprinting upon it the marks of Their lotus feet.

2. Thus desiring to enjoy pastimes, Lord Madhava, sounding His flute, surrounded by cowherd boys who were chanting His glories, and accompanied by Lord Baladeva, kept the cows before Him and entered the Vrndavana forest, which was full of flowers and rich with nourishment for the animals.

3. The Supreme Personality of Godhead looked over that forest, which resounded with the charming sounds of bees, animals and birds, and which was enhanced by a lake whose clear water resembled the minds of great souls and by a breeze carrying the fragrance of hundred-petaled lotuses. Seeing all this, Lord Krsna decided to enjoy the auspicious atmosphere.

4. The primeval Lord saw that the stately trees, with their beautiful reddish buds and their heavy burden of fruits and flowers, were bending down to touch His feet with the tips of their branches. Thus He smiled gently and addressed His elder brother.

5. The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O greatest of Lords, just see how these trees are bowing their heads at Your lotus feet, which are worshipable by the immortal demigods. The trees are offering You their fruits and flowers to eradicate the dark ignorance that has caused their birth as trees.

6. O original personality, these bees must all be great sages and most elevated devotees of Yours, for they are worshiping You by following You along the path and chanting Your glories, which are themselves a holy place for the entire world. Though You have disguised Yourself within this forest, O sinless one, they refuse to abandon You, their worshipable Lord.

7. O worshipable one, these peacocks are dancing before You out of joy, these doe are pleasing You with affectionate glances, just as the gopis do, and these cuckoos are honoring You with Vedic prayers. All these residents of the forest are most fortunate, and their behavior toward You certainly befits great souls receiving another great soul at home.

8. This earth has now become most fortunate, because You have touched her grass and bushes with Your feet and her trees and creepers with Your fingernails, and because You have graced her rivers, mountains, birds and animals with Your merciful glances. But above all, You have embraced the young cowherd women between Your two arms—a favor hankered after by the goddess of fortune herself.

9. Thus expressing His satisfaction with the beautiful forest of Vrndavana and its inhabitants, Lord Krsna enjoyed tending the cows and other animals with His friends on the banks of the river Yamuna below Govardhana Hill.

10. Sometimes the honeybees in Vrndavana became so mad with ecstasy that they closed their eyes and began to sing. Lord Krsna, moving along the forest path with His cowherd boyfriends and Baladeva, would then respond to the bees by imitating their singing while His friends sang about His pastimes. Sometimes Lord Krsna would imitate the chattering of a parrot, sometimes, with a sweet voice, the call of a cuckoo, and sometimes the cooing of swans. Sometimes He vigorously imitated the dancing of a peacock, making His cowherd boyfriends laugh. Sometimes, with a voice as deep as the rumbling of clouds, He would call out with great affection the names of the animals who had wandered far from the herd, thus enchanting the cows and the cowherd boys.

11. Sometimes He would cry out in imitation of birds such as the cakoras, krauncas, cakrahvas, bharadvajas and peacocks, and sometimes He would run away with the smaller animals in mock fear of lions and tigers.

12. When His elder brother, fatigued from playing, would lie down with His head upon the lap of a cowherd boy, Lord Krsna would help Him relax by personally massaging His feet and offering other services.

13. Sometimes, as the cowherd boys danced, sang, moved about and playfully fought with each other, Krsna and Balarama, standing nearby hand in hand, would glorify Their friends’ activities and laugh.

14. Sometimes Lord Krsna grew tired from fighting and lay down at the base of a tree, resting upon a bed made of soft twigs and buds and using the lap of a cowherd friend as His pillow.

15. Some of the cowherd boys, who were all great souls, would then massage His lotus feet, and others, qualified by being free of all sin, would expertly fan the Supreme Lord.

16. In this way the Supreme Lord, whose soft lotus feet are personally attended by the goddess of fortune, concealed His transcendental opulences by His internal potency and acted like the son of a cowherd. Yet even while enjoying like a village boy in the company of other village residents, He often exhibited feats only God could perform.

O Devi Radhika! Being enthralled like two intoxicated elephants, You and Sri Krsna constantly delight in amorous pastimes in the pleasure-groves of Sri Vrndavana. Therefore, O Gandharvika, please be kind and mercifully grant me the darsana of Your two lotuslike faces.

ha devi! kaku-bhara-gadgada yadya vaca,
yace nipatya bhuvi dandavad udbhatartih
asya prasadam abudhasya janasya krtva,
gandharvike! nija-gane gananam vidhehi (2)
O Devi Gandharvika, I am greatly distressed. Therefore, falling to the ground like a rod, I submit the following prayer to Your lotus feet in a choked-up voice full of despair. Please be merciful upon this ignorant person and consider me as one of Your maidservants.

mohita-samasta-jagaj-janasya
syamasya vama-bhuja-baddha-tanum kadaham

O Srimati Syama (Radhika), You are far more beautiful than Sri Laksmidevi. When shall I worship You who are embraced by the left arm of Your beloved Sri Syamasundara, whose beauty eclipses that of Sriman Narayana and captivates the entire creation?

tvam pracchadena mudira-cchabina pidhaya
manjira-mukta-caranan ca vidhaya devi!
kunje vrajendra-tanayena virajamane
naktam kada pramuditam abhisarayisye (4)
O Devi Radhika! When will I become Your handmaiden and dress You appropriately for Your lover's rendezvous by removing the ankle bells from Your lotus feet and covering Your graceful limbs in a blue sari the color of a fresh cloud? When will I lead You to the kunja at night, Your heart filled with rapture and anticipation to meet with Your lover, Sri Nanda-nandana?

O Devi! You and Sri Krsna are the ornament of the three worlds. In the forest grove when both of You recline on a soft bed of a beautiful variety of flowers and partake in amorous pastimes abounding with merriment, will I be blessed to serve You and Your beloved's lotus feet?

O Vrndavanesvari! When the lotus faces of You and Your beloved are decorated with drops of perspiration due to the labour of love-sports, You sit in the shade of a beautiful kadamba tree on the bank of Radha-kunda in order to rest. At that time will I, as Your maidservant, fan Your bodies with a jewelled camara?

linaµ nikunja-kuhare bhavatim mukunde
citraiva sucitavati ruciraksi! naham
bhugnam bhruvam na racayeti mrsarusam tvam
agre vrajendra-tanasya kada nu nesye (7)
O charming-eyed Sri Radhika! When You playfully hide in a concealed burrow of the forest grove, Sri Krsna will come to know of Your whereabouts and appear before You. You will then question me reproachfully, "O Rupa Manjari! Did you disclose My hiding place to Him?" Then I will answer, "No, no, I said nothing. It was Citra sakhi who told Him, so please don't frown upon me." When will I be blessed to see You feigning such anger toward me, and when will I get the opportunity to appease You with sweet words in the presence of Sri Krsna?

am kada nu bhavatim avalokayisye? (8)
When, in a prankish mood, You defeat Sri Krsna in a battle of words, You become exceedingly jubilant and exult in the pride of Your oratory prowess. The sakhis, being overjoyed with the victory of their svamini, praise You, cheering, "Jaya Radhe, jaya Radhe!" When will I behold You in such a state?

yah ko 'pi susthu vrsabhanu-kumari-kayah
samprarthanastakam idam pathati prapannah
sa preyasa saha sametya dhrta-pramoda
tatra prasada-laharim urari-karoti (9)
Anyone who takes shelter of Sri Vrsabhanu-nandini, Sri Radhika, by regularly reciting this samprathanastaka with great faith and an attitude of bhakti, will surely please Her along with Her beloved Sri Krsna, thus becoming the recipient of Their profuse mercy.

Sri Radhe-Krsna's playful pastimes (vihara) - Paitha grama



When Sri Krsna disappeared from the springtime rasa, the grief-stricken gopis began searching for Him everywhere. Krsna assumed a four-armed form at Paitha grama, but when the gopis saw this form, they simply offered obeisances and continued on their way. Srimatiji, restless in seperation from Krsna, finally arrived there. When Sri Krsna saw Srimatiji He was unable to maintain His four-armed form, and the two arms entered His body (paitha gaye). He then met with Srimatiji in His form as an ever-fresh, youthful cowherd boy and expert dancer holding a flute in His hand. Sri Krsna begged forgiveness from Her and said," Beloved, when I suddenly did not see You in the rasa, I became aggrieved in seperation from You and began searching for You. I am only performing this rasa for You. You should never go into jealous anger (mana) and leave Me ever again."

Krsna has many beloveds, but Srimati Radhika is the crown jewel of them all, because She is the embodiment of mahabhava and the possessor of all good qualities. This is why Sri Krsna was able to maintain His four-armed form before the other sakhis, but could not maintain His mood upon seeing Srimatiji and His two extra arms entered into His body. This is the special glory of Srimati Radhika.

(The Nectar Moon of Sri Radha's Sweetness)



1. May Sri Radha, by taking shelter of whom they who yearn to become Krsna's gopi friends attain their goal, by worshipping whom one attains the supreme perfection, whose holy name is the vine-crown adorning the Upanisads, and who with many festivals of deep love worships the boy who is the jewel of Vraja, be pleased with me.

2. I bow down before a splendour that bears the name Radha, a splendour that has limbs splendid like millions of lightning flashes, a beautiful face splendid with bliss, bimba-fruit lips splendid like coral, hands splendid like budding twigs, breasts splendid like golden lotus buds, a splendour that has lotus eyes, a splendour that enjoys charming pastimes in the newly-blossoming forest groves.

3. May charming Sri Radha, whose teeth are a row of pearls, whose beautiful lips are bimba fruits, whose waist is slender, whose deep navel is a whirlpool of newer and newer nectar, whose hips are graceful and broad, who is a rising ocean of the beauty of youth, and who is the heart of the intelligent gopis, protect us.

4. O Sri Radha, O goddess with glistening curly black hair, glistening bimba-fruit lips, a moonlike face, playful khanjana bird eyes, a splendid pearl in the tip of Your nose, broad hips, slender waist, splendid breasts, a host of wonderful glories, and vine-arms decorated with graceful armlets, please appear before me.

5. In the newly fashioned stage of Sri Radha's limbs a play will now be performed. The curtain of shyness now rises. A smile now offers a handful of flowers. Youthfulness speaks graceful words of prologue. The king of love enters and sits on the golden throne of Her hips. Now playful sidelong glances show their wonderful skill in wild dancing.

6. May Sri Sri Radha-Madhava's festival of love, where there is a great wonder of beauty and where there are new youthfulness, charm, skill in the playing among the waves of many pastimes, and places of great wonder, and where there is now awe, reverence, or unapproachableness, protect you all.

7. Will I someday gaze on Sri Radha's footprints, which are the abodes of wonderful nectar and glory, and which cloud-dark Mukunda, whose form is filled with the sweetest bliss, lovingly searches for in Vrndavana forest.

8. Glory to the playful rasika couple, who with charming smiles and laughter enjoy pastimes of hide-and-seek in Vrndavana's forest groves filled with the always-new nectar of bliss and the humming of bumblebees.

9. O Radha whose face is more glorious than millions of autumn moons, the fragrance of whose jasmine-braided hair makes the bumblebees go wild, whose conchshell necklace is splendid with a necklace, the vines of whose delicate arms hold moving bracelets, who is dressed in splendid silk garments, and whose lotus feet hold tinkling anklets, when will I see Your wonderful form?

10. O Sri Radha, when will I celebrate a nectar festival of being eligible to hear Your playful intimate conversations with Your lover, to take You by the hand and lead You to Your lover's bed, and to retie Your braids undone in Your amorous pastimes?

Brahma’s Prayers to Lord Krsna



1. After the killing of Aghasura, Lord Krsna was having lunch with his cowherd boyfriends. The calves strayed away somewhere and could not be found. When Krsna went in search of the calves, Brahma came to the spot and removed
the calves and the boys to some secured place. Understanding this, Krsna expanded Himself as calves and boys. When Lord Brahma returned after a moment of time had passed (according to his own measurement), he saw that although by human measurement a complete year had passed, Lord Krsna, after all that time, was engaged just as before in playing with the boys and calves, who were His expansions. Seeing His greatness, Brahma started offering praises to Lord Krsna as follows:

2. Lord Brahma said: My dear Lord, You are the only worshipable Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and therefore I offer my humble obeisances and prayers just to please You. O son of the king of the cowherds, Your transcendental body is dark blue like a new cloud, Your garment is brilliant like lightning, and the beauty of Your face is enhanced by Your gunja earrings and the peacock feather on Your head. Wearing garlands of various forest flowers and leaves, and equipped with a herding stick, a buffalo horn and a flute, You stand beautifully with a morsel of food in Your hand.

3. My dear Lord, neither I nor anyone else can estimate the potency of this transcendental body of Yours, which has shown such mercy to me and which appears just to fulfill the desires of Your pure devotees.

4. Those who, even while remaining situated in their established social positions, throw away the process of speculative knowledge and with their body, words and mind offer all respects to descriptions of Your personality and activities, dedicating their lives to these narrations, which are vibrated by You personally and by Your pure devotees, certainly conquer Your Lordship, although You are otherwise unconquerable by anyone within the three worlds.

5. My dear Lord, devotional service unto You is the best path for self-realization. If someone gives up that path and engages in the cultivation of speculative knowledge, he will simply undergo a troublesome process and will not achieve his desired result.

6. My dear Lord, one who earnestly waits for You to bestow Your causeless mercy upon him, all the while patiently suffering the reactions of his past misdeeds and offering You respectful obeisances with his heart, words and body, is surely eligible for liberation, for it has become his rightful claim.

7. Therefore, O infallible Lord, kindly excuse my offenses. I have taken birth in the mode of passion and am therefore simply foolish, presuming myself a controller independent of Your Lordship. My eyes are blinded by the darkness of ignorance, which causes me to think of myself as the unborn creator of the universe. But please consider that I am Your servant and therefore worthy of Your compassion.

8. Have You not shown me today that both You Yourself and everything within this creation are manifestations of Your inconceivable potency? First You appeared alone, and then You manifested Yourself as all of Vrndavana’s calves and cowherd boys, Your friends. Next You appeared as an equal number of four-handed Visnu forms, who were worshiped by all living beings, including me, and after that You appeared as an equal number of complete universes. Finally, You have now returned to Your unlimited form as the Supreme Absolute Truth, one without a second.

9. To persons ignorant of Your actual transcendental position, You appear as part of the material world, manifesting Yourself by the expansion of Your inconceivable energy. Thus for the creation of the universe You appear as me [Brahma], for its maintenance You appear as Yourself [Visnu], and for its annihilation You appear as Lord Trinetra [Siva].

10. O Lord, O supreme creator and master, You have no material birth, yet to defeat the false pride of the faithless demons and show mercy to Your saintly devotees, You take birth among the demigods, sages, human beings, animals and even the aquatics.

11. O supreme great one! O Supreme Personality of Godhead! O Supersoul, master of all mystic power! Your pastimes are taking place continuously in these three worlds, but who can estimate where, how and when You are employing Your spiritual energy and performing these innumerable pastimes? No one can understand the mystery of how Your spiritual energy acts.

12. Therefore this entire universe, which like a dream is by nature unreal, nevertheless appears real, and thus it covers one’s consciousness and assails one with repeated miseries. This universe appears real because it is manifested by the potency of illusion emanating from You, whose unlimited transcendental forms are full of eternal happiness and knowledge.

13. You are the one Supreme Soul, the primeval Supreme Personality, the Absolute Truth—selfmanifested, endless and beginningless. You are eternal and infallible, perfect and complete, without any rival and free from all material designations. Your happiness can never be obstructed, nor have You any connection with material contamination. Indeed, You are the indestructible nectar of immortality.

14. Those who have received the clear vision of knowledge from the sunlike spiritual master can see You in this way, as the very Soul of all souls, the Supersoul of everyone’s own self. Thus understanding Your original personality, they are able to cross over the ocean of illusory material existence.

15. O almighty Lord, how greatly fortunate are the cows and ladies of Vrndavana, the nectar of whose breast-milk You have happily drunk to Your full satisfaction, taking the form of their calves and children! All the Vedic sacrifices performed from time immemorial up to the present day have not given You as much satisfaction.

16. How greatly fortunate are Nanda Maharaja, the cowherd men and all the other inhabitants of Vrajabhumi! There is no limit to their good fortune, because the Absolute Truth, the source of transcendental bliss, the eternal Supreme Brahman, has become their friend.

17. Yet even though the extent of the good fortune of these residents of Vrndavana is inconceivable, we eleven presiding deities of the various senses, headed by Lord Siva, are also most fortunate, because the senses of these devotees of Vrndavana are the cups through which we repeatedly drink the nectarean, intoxicating beverage of the honey of Your lotus feet.

18. My greatest possible good fortune would be to take any birth whatever in this forest of Gokula and have my head bathed by the dust falling from the lotus feet of any of its residents. Their entire life and soul is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Mukunda, the dust of whose lotus feet is still being searched for in the Vedic mantras.

19. My mind becomes bewildered just trying to think of what reward other than You could be found anywhere. You are the embodiment of all benedictions, which You bestow upon these residents of the cowherd community of Vrndavana. You have already arranged to give Yourself to Putana and her family members in exchange for her disguising herself as a devotee. So what is left for You to give these devotees of Vrndavana, whose homes, wealth, friends, dear relations, bodies, children and very lives and hearts are all dedicated only to You?

20. My dear Krsna, I now humbly request permission to leave. Actually, You are the knower and seer of all things. Indeed, You are the Lord of all the universes, and yet I offer this one universe unto You.

21. O Supreme Personality of Godhead, as long as this universe exists and as long as the sun shines, I will offer my obeisances unto You.

22.Having thus offered his prayers, Brahma circumambulated his worshipable Lord, the unlimited Personality of Godhead, three times and then bowed down at His lotus feet. The appointed creator of the universe then returned to his own residence.

23. After granting His son Brahma permission to leave, the Supreme Personality of Godhead took the calves, who were still where they had been a year earlier, and brought them to the riverbank, where He had been taking His meal and where His cowherd boyfriends remained just as before.

24. O King, although the boys had passed an entire year apart from the Lord of their very lives, they had been covered by Lord Krsna’s illusory potency and thus considered that year merely half a moment.

25. The cowherd boyfriends said to Lord Krsna: You have returned so quickly! We have not eaten even one morsel in Your absence. Please come here and take Your meal without distraction.

26. Then Lord Hrsikesa, smiling, finished His lunch in the company of His cowherd friends. While they were returning from the forest to their homes in Vraja, Lord Krsna showed the cowherd boys the skin of the dead serpent Aghasura.

27. Lord Krsna’s transcendental body was decorated with peacock feathers and flowers and painted with forest minerals, and His bamboo flute loudly and festively resounded. As He called out to His calves by name, His cowherd boyfriends purified the whole world by chanting His glories. Thus Lord Krsna entered the cow pasture of His father, Nanda Maharaja, and the sight of His beauty at once produced a great festival for the eyes of all the cowherd women.

28. As the cowherd boys reached the village of Vraja, they sang, “Today Krsna saved us by killing a great serpent!” Thus the killing of Aghasura was disclosed in Vrajabhumi after one year, as if it had taken place on that very day.

29. Any person who hears or chants these pastimes Lord Murari performed with His cowherd friends— the killing of Aghasura, the taking of lunch on the forest grass, the Lord’s manifestation of transcendental forms, and the wonderful prayers offered by Lord Brahma—is sure to achieve all his spiritual desires.

30. In this way the boys spent their childhood in the land of Vrndavana playing hide-and-go-seek, building play bridges, jumping about like monkeys and engaging in many other such games.

When Radha saw Krsna enjoying affectionate exchanges with all the cowherd maidens in the groves of Vrndavana, she became indignant because he had not acknowledged her eminence. She immediately departed for another part of the forest and hid herself inside a shady bower that resounded with the drone of bumblebees. When the sakhi saw Radha powerless to go to Krsna despite her being fervently desirous of his company, she described Radha’s condition to Govinda, who was himself inflicted physically and psychologically with transformations of intense amorous desire.

Translation
Krsna was absorbed in thoughts of Radha. In the meantime, the moon enhanced the beauty of Vrndavana with his gentle rays. The moon appeared like a drop of sandalwood paste on the lotus face of a beautiful newly married woman in the form of the eastern direction. His limbs bore a stain like the mark of tuberculosis on an unchaste woman when she
strays from the path of social etiquette.

Translation
The moon had already risen to its zenith and Madhava was late. Therefore, afflicted by separation and loudly expressing her lamentation in various ways, Radha began to suffer the most intense agony.

After Narada heard the glories of gopi-bhava (the exalted moods of the gopis) from the mouth of Vrnda-devi, the presiding deity of Vrndavana, an intense desire to lovingly serve the Divine Couple Sri Radha-Krsna as a gopi in Their most elevated amorous pastimes arose in his heart. He received the gopala-mantra from Brahma, the Grandsire of the world, and began to perform meditation and worship in raga-marga, the path of spontaneous attachment, in the wake of the gopis.
After doing this for long time, Yogamaya Paurnamasi dipped Narada in Kusum-sarovara, by which he received the form of a gopi. Thereafter, he received the ekadasa-bhava (eleven features that constitute one's true identity) in the path of spontaneous attachment and became qualified to serve the Divine Couple.

1. O Radha, if You affectionately show me to Your beloved, who walks on the path of debauchery, then please hear how I will faithfully serve You. With smiling sidelong glances, and with the hairs of my body standing up with joy, I will tightly embrace Your beloved. In this way I will taste the nectar of service to Your feet.

2. "You like the dark sky when the moon is waning, the newly blossoming blue lotus, the black deer, the dark tamala tree, the dark monsoon clouds, and the dark Yamuna river. Why, then, do You dislike charming Krsna, who is so like them in name and form?" Will I see You smile, O Radha, as I speak these words?

3. I meditate on the girls of Vraja as they follow Sri Radha, their eyes like blue lotus flowers tossed to and fro by waves of playful glances, Their breasts like pairs of golden mountains flying in the sky, and their feet like blossoming lotus flowers suddenly planted in the ground.

4. Your eyes are like two charming fishes swimming in the ocean of nectar. Your breasts are like two cakravaka birds in the lake of nectar. Your face is like a golden lotus blossoming in the celestial Ganga. O Radha, may the many glories of the waves of Your mercy splash against me.

5. Will a certain unattainable girl, who is wonderfully glorious in Her lover's company, who is the jewel of saintly and beautiful girls, whose toenail moons on Her lotus feet shine with great moonlight, a single ray of which is more glorious than millions of goddesses of fortune, who enjoys pastimes in the nectar ocean of fathomless love, and whose limbs blossom with sweetness and charm, be merciful to me?

6. O Radha, O goddess who in a temple of jasmine flowers by the Yamuna's shore enjoys charming pastimes with your forest flower-garlanded lover, O goddess who plays in a wonderful and eternal nectar ocean of pastimes, please splash me with the many glories of the waves of Your mercy.

7. O daughter of Vrsabhanu, O goddess from whose lotus feet stream waves of love and bliss, O goddess before whose maidservants the Kamadeva of Vrndavana, yearning to attain the festival of Your mercy, speaks sweet words, I bow down before Your beautiful feet.

8. May the two wonderful syllables Ra-dha, which at once attract even the king of Gokula, which teach the love-filled devotees that all material goals are very petty and unimportant, and which are chanted by Lord Krsna Himself, even though He is already the husband of the goddess of fortune, appear before me.

9. May the two syllable mantra "Radha", which Lord Hari, sitting like the king of yogis in a cottage by the Yamuna's shore, meditating on Her lotus feet, overcome with splendid bliss and nectar love, and His eyes filled with tears, always chants, always appear in my heart.

10. The nectarean word "Radha", which is very far from the demigods, the liberated souls, the devotees, and the kindly persons who are friends to all, which when spoken with love brings a flood of the blissful nectar of love, and which Lord Hari, tears streaming down His face, happily hears, chants, and sings in the company of the gopis, is my life and soul.

The Stealing of the Boys and Calves by Brahma



1. The incident of Krsna's saving Himself and His associates from death and of giving deliverance to Aghasura, who had assumed the form of a python, took place when Krsna was five years old. It was disclosed in Vrajabhumi after one year, as if it had taken place on that very day. It happened like this:

2. After saving the boys and calves from the mouth of Aghasura, who was death personified, Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, brought them all to the bank of the river and started having lunch.

3. Like the whorl of a lotus flower surrounded by its petals and leaves, Krsna sat in the center, encircled by lines of His friends, who all looked very beautiful. Every one of them was trying to look forward toward Krsna, thinking that Krsna might look toward him. In this way they all enjoyed their lunch in the forest.

4. Krsna is yajna-bhuk--that is, He eats only offerings of yajna--but to exhibit His childhood pastimes, He now sat with His flute tucked between His waist and His tight cloth on His right side and with His horn bugle and cow-driving stick on His left. Holding in His hand a very nice preparation of yogurt and rice, with pieces of suitable fruit between His fingers, He sat like the whorl of a lotus flower, looking forward toward all His friends, personally joking with them and creating jubilant laughter among them as He ate. At that time, the denizens of heaven were watching, struck with wonder at how the Personality of Godhead, who eats only in yajna, was now eating with His friends in the forest.

5. While the cowherd boys, who knew nothing within the core of their hearts but Krsna, were thus engaged in eating their lunch in the forest, the calves went far away, deep into the forest, being allured by green grass.

6. When Krsna saw that His friends the cowherd boys were frightened, He, the fierce controller even of fear itself, said, just to mitigate their fear, "My dear friends, do not stop eating. I shall bring your calves back to this spot by personally going after them Myself."

7. Then, carrying His yogurt and rice in His hand, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, immediately went out to search for the calves of His friends.

8. Brahma, who resides in the higher planetary system in the sky, had observed the activities of the most powerful Krsna in killing and delivering Aghasura, and he was astonished. Now that same Brahma wanted to show some of his own power and see the power of Krsna, who was engaged in His childhood pastimes, playing as if with ordinary cowherd boys. Therefore, in Krsna's absence, Brahma took all the boys and calves to another place.

9. Thereafter, when Krsna was unable to find the calves, He returned to the bank of the river, but there He was also unable to see the cowherd boys. Thus He began to search for both the calves and the boys.

10. When Krsna was unable to find the calves and their caretakers, the cowherd boys, anywhere in the forest, He could suddenly understand that this was the work of Lord Brahma.

11. Thereafter, just to create pleasure both for Brahma and for the mothers of the calves and cowherd boys, Krsna, the creator of the entire cosmic manifestation, expanded Himself as calves and boys.

12. By His Vasudeva feature, Krsna simultaneously expanded Himself into the exact number of missing cowherd boys and calves, with their exact bodily features, their particular types of hands, legs and other limbs, their sticks, bugles and flutes, their lunch bags, their particular types of dress and ornaments placed in various ways, their names, ages and forms, and their special activities and characteristics. By expanding Himself in this way, beautiful Krsna proved the statement samagra-jagad visnumayam: "Lord Visnu is all-pervading."

13. Now expanding Himself so as to appear as all the calves and cowherd boys, all of them as they were, and at the same time appear as their leader, Krsna entered Vrajabhumi, the land of His father, Nanda Maharaja, just as He usually did while enjoying their company.

14. Krsna, who had divided Himself as different calves and also as different cowherd boys, entered different cow sheds as the calves and then different homes as different boys.

15. The mothers of the boys, upon hearing the sounds of the flutes and bugles being played by their sons, immediately rose from their household tasks, lifted their boys onto their laps, embraced them with both arms and began to feed them with their breast milk, which flowed forth because of extreme love specifically for Krsna. Actually Krsna is everything, but at that time, expressing extreme love and affection, they took special pleasure in feeding Krsna, the Parabrahman, and Krsna drank the milk from His respective mothers as if it were a nectarean beverage.

16. Thereafter, all the cows entered their different sheds and began mooing loudly, calling for their respective calves. When the calves arrived, the mothers began licking the calves' bodies again and again and profusely feeding them with the milk flowing from their milk bags.

17. Although the inhabitants of Vrajabhumi, the cowherd men and cowherd women, previously had more affection for Krsna than for their own children, now, for one year, their affection for their own sons continuously increased, for Krsna had now become their sons. There was no limit to the increment of their affection for their sons, who were now Krsna. Every day they found new inspiration for loving their children as much as they loved Krsna.

18. In this way, Lord Sri Krsna, having Himself become the cowherd boys and groups of calves, maintained Himself by Himself. Thus He continued His pastimes, both in Vrndavana and in the forest, for one year.

19. One day, five or six nights before the completion of the year, Krsna, tending the calves, entered the forest along with Balarama.

20. Thereafter, while pasturing atop Govardhana Hill, the cows looked down to find some green grass and saw their calves pasturing near Vrndavana, not very far away.

21. When the cows saw their own calves from the top of Govardhana Hill, they forgot themselves and their caretakers because of increased affection, and although the path was very rough, they ran toward their calves with great anxiety, each running as if with one pair of legs. Their milk bags full and flowing with milk, their heads and tails raised, and their humps moving with their necks, they ran forcefully until they reached their calves to feed them.

22. The cowherd men when saw their own sons, they were overwhelmed by great affection. Experiencing a great attraction, they lifted their sons, embraced them in their arms and enjoyed the highest pleasure by smelling their
sons' heads.

23. When Baladeva saw this attachment, He was unable to understand the reason for it, and thus He began to consider as follows.

24. What is this wonderful phenomenon? The affection of all the inhabitants of Vraja, including Me, toward these boys and calves is increasing as never before, just like our affection for Lord Krsna, the Supersoul of all living entities.

25. Thinking in this way, Lord Balarama was able to see, with the eye of transcendental knowledge, that all these calves and Krsna's friends were expansions of the form of Sri Krsna.

26. Lord Baladeva said, "O supreme controller! Although one, You are existing in the different forms of the calves
and boys. Please briefly explain this to Me." Having thus been requested by Lord Baladeva, Krsna explained the whole situation, and Baladeva understood it.

27. When Lord Brahma returned after a moment of time had passed (according to his own measurement), he saw that although by human measurement a complete year had passed, Lord Krsna, after all that time, was engaged just as before in playing with the boys and calves, who were His expansions.

28. Lord Brahma thought: Whatever boys and calves there were in Gokula, I have kept them sleeping on the bed of my mystic potency, and to this very day they have not yet risen again.

29. A similar number of boys and calves have been playing with Krsna for one whole year, yet they are different from the ones illusioned by my mystic potency. Who are they? Where did they come from?

30. Thus Lord Brahma, thinking and thinking for a long time, tried to distinguish between those two sets of boys, who were each separately existing. He tried to understand who was real and who was not real, but he couldn't understand at all.

31. Then, while Lord Brahma looked on, all the calves and the boys tending them immediately appeared to have complexions the color of bluish rainclouds and to be dressed in yellow silken garments.

32. All those personalities had four arms, holding conchshell, disc, mace and lotus flower in Their hands. They wore helmets on Their heads, earrings on Their ears and garlands of forest flowers around Their necks. On the upper portion of the right side of Their chests was the emblem of the goddess of fortune. Furthermore, They wore armlets on Their arms, the Kaustubha gem around Their necks, which were marked with three lines like a conchshell, and bracelets on Their wrists. With bangles on Their ankles, ornaments on Their feet, and sacred belts around Their waists, They all appeared very beautiful.

33. Every part of Their bodies, from Their feet to the top of Their heads, was fully decorated with fresh, tender garlands of tulasi leaves offered by devotees engaged in worshiping the Lord by the greatest pious activities, namely hearing and chanting.

34. All beings, both moving and nonmoving, from the four-headed Lord Brahma down to the most insignificant living entity, had taken forms and were differently worshiping those visnu-murtis, according to their respective capacities, with various means of worship, such as dancing and singing.

35. Thus Lord Brahma saw the Supreme Brahman, by whose energy this entire universe, with its moving and nonmoving living beings, is manifested. He also saw at the same time all the calves and boys as the Lord's expansions.

36. Thus Lord Brahma was mystified. "What is this?" he thought, and then he was not even able to see. Lord
Krsna, understanding Brahma's position, then at once removed the curtain of His yogamaya.

37. Lord Brahma's external consciousness then revived, and he stood up, just like a dead man coming back to life. Opening his eyes with great difficulty, he saw the universe, along with himself.

38. Then, looking in all directions, Lord Brahma immediately saw Vrndavana before him, filled with trees.

39. Then Lord Brahma saw the Absolute Truth assuming the role of a child in a family of cowherd men and standing all alone, just as before, with a morsel of food in His hand, searching everywhere for the calves and His cowherd friends.

40. After seeing this, Lord Brahma hastily got down from his swan carrier, fell down like a golden rod and touched the lotus feet of Lord Krsna with the tips of the four crowns on his heads. Offering his obeisances, he bathed the feet of Krsna with the water of his tears of joy.

41. Rising and falling again and again at the lotus feet of Lord Krsna for a long time, Lord Brahma remembered over and over the Lord's greatness he had just seen.

42. Then, rising very gradually and wiping his two eyes, Lord Brahma looked up at Mukunda. Lord Brahma, his head bent low, his mind concentrated and his body trembling, very humbly began, with faltering words, to offer praises to Lord Krsna.

When Radha saw Krsna enjoying affectionate exchanges with all the cowherd maidens in the groves of Vrndavana, she became indignant because he had not acknowledged her eminence. She immediately departed for another part of the forest and hid herself inside a shady bower that resounded with the drone of bumblebees.

Translation
Radha was sitting in a chamber of flowering vines. When the sakhi saw Radha powerless to go to Krsna despite her being fervently desirous of his company, she described Radha’s condition to Govinda, who was himself inflicted physically and psychologically with transformations of intense amorous desire.

Translation
“O Hari, you are her only refuge. Sri Radha is sinking to the depths of despair in the trysting place. She is in agony. In all directions and in the core of her heart, she sees you who are so skilful in drinking the sweet nectar of her lips.”

“O cheater! Covered with severe horripilation, stunned from within and drawing her breath with pitiful groans, the doe-eyed Radhika is absorbed in intense bodily transformations arising from kama for you. Somehow she holds on to her life-air while being submerged in the ocean of prema-rasa.”

Translation
“The limbs of Sri Radha’s body are incomparably attractive. She decorates them with ornaments many times. When leaves rustle, she is filled with expectation, thinking, ‘Oh, you have come.’ She makes a soft bed for you and when you are late she feels acute pain. Thus, although she is occupied in various pastimes such as decorating herself, feeling apprehension, making the bed, speaking loving words and fixing her resolve, she still cannot pass this night in separation from you.”

When Radha saw that her sakhi was late, she made an excuse to send another female envoy. That messenger disguised
herself as a male pilgrim and approached Krsna in the evening twilight. The “pilgrim” gave Krsna a message from Radha indirectly informing him about a secret tryst.

bhratar yasi na drsti-gocaram itah sananda-nandaspadam

Translation
“When I was a guest in Sri Radha’s home, she said to me, ‘O brother, why are you resting at the foot of this bhandira tree? A poisonous black serpent lives here. Get up and go to the delightful home of Nanda, which is visible just before you. Why don’t you go there?’” On hearing these words of Radha from the lips of a pilgrim, Krsna thanked “him” in such a way that Sri Nanda Maharaja would not understand the inner mood of his statements. Sri Jayadeva says, “May Govinda’s words of praise to that pilgrim be victorious.”

Characteristics of Pure Devotional Service:



In Srimad-Bhagavatam, Srila Kapiladeva, while instructing His mother, has given the following characteristics of pure devotional service: "My dear mother, those who are My pure devotees, and who have no desire for material benefit or philosophical speculation, have their minds so much engaged in My service that they are never interested in asking Me for anything--except to be engaged in that service. They do not even beg to live in My abode with Me."

Rupa Gosvami states that there are six characteristics of pure devotional service, which are as follows:

(1) Pure devotional service brings immediate relief from all kinds of material distress: The Lord gives His word in Bhagavad-gita that He will protect surrendered souls from the reactions of all sinful activities.

(2) Pure devotional service is the beginning of all auspiciousness: A person who is engaged in devotional service in full Krsna consciousness is to be understood to be doing the best service to the whole world and to be pleasing everyone in the world.

(3) Pure devotional service automatically puts one in transcendental pleasure: In the tantra-sastra Lord Siva speaks to his wife, Sati, in this way: "My dear wife, a person who has surrendered himself at the lotus feet of Govinda and who has thus developed pure Krsna consciousness can be very easily awarded all the perfections desired by the impersonalists; and beyond this, he can enjoy the happiness achieved by the pure devotees." Happiness derived from pure devotional service is the highest, because it is eternal.

(4) Pure devotional service is rarely achieved: Krsna can easily offer a person material happiness or even liberation, but He does not agree very easily to award a person engagement in His devotional service. Devotional service can in fact be attained only through the mercy of a pure devotee. In the Caitanyacaritamrta (Madhya 19.151) it is said, "By the mercy of the spiritual master who is a pure devotee and by the mercy of Krsna one can achieve the platform of devotional service. There is no other way."

(5) Those in pure devotional service deride even the conception of liberation.

(6) Pure devotional service is the only means to attract Krsna: Krsna is all-attractive, but pure devotional service attracts even Him. This means that pure devotional service is even transcendentally stronger than Krsna
Himself, because it is Krsna's internal potency. The symbol of devotional service in the highest degree is Radharani. Krsna is called Madanamohana, which means that He is so attractive that He can defeat the attraction
of thousands of Cupids. But Radharani is still more attractive, for She can even attract Krsna. Therefore devotees call Her Madana-mohana-mohini--the attractor of the attractor of Cupid. To perform devotional service means to follow in the footsteps of Radharani, and devotees in Vrndavana put themselves under the care of Radharani in order to achieve perfection in their devotional service.

One morning, Srimati Radhika and Her sakhis came to the bank of Kusuma-sarovara to pick beli, cameli, juhi, kanera, campaka and other flowers that bloomed here. Srimati Radhika saw a tree with a branch full of flowers. Knowing that she was coming to Kusuma-sarovara to pick flowers, playful Krsna had climbed that very tree. Using all His weight, He pushed the branch down and remained hidden in the foliage so that Srimatiji could not see Him. Radhika pulled down that branch with one hand, and was absorbed in picking its flowers with the other when suddenly Krsna shifted to another branch. The branch sprung up, lifting up Radhika with it and She cried out for help. Sri Krsna leapt out from the tree and caught hanging Srimatiji in His arms. The sakhis began clapping and laughing loudly, but Srimati Radhika, released Herself from Sri Krsna's embrace and scolded Him harshly.

1. The four goals of life, which begin with material piety, may be glorious to some people, but I think they are useless. Why should I waste my time talking about them? Other people may place on their heads the path of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I am still not interested. The only thing that pleases my heart is the nectar that is service to a wonderful jewel like girl who stays deep in Vrndavana forest. Nothing else pleases my heart.

2. I serve Radha, who is the heart of the sweetest and most splendid love, who is the highest limit of skill in transcendental amorous pastimes, who is the goddess worshipped by the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, who is the supreme goddess, who appears as Durga and Saci, whose form is full of bliss, who is the Lord's first potency, who is supremely independent, and who is the first consort of Vrndavana's master.

3. Persons who avoid service to Radha, but yearn to attain Lord Krsna's company, are like persons seeking moonlight without the moon. Persons who do not understand that Radha is the spring from which the nectar waves of love for Krsna flow can attain only one single drop, and no more, of the great ocean of nectar.

4. I offer my respectful obeisances to the great souls who, renouncing all fruitive work, not attached even to devotional service to the Supreme Lord, and living the most wonderful and sweet life, always meditate on Sri Radha, who is filled with the joy of pure love and glorious with the splendour of the wonderful sweetness of youth.

5. Who are these fools who, because of their spiritual master's order, do not mark their shoulders with the conch, cakra, and other symbols, do not draw a temple of Lord Hari on their foreheads, and do not wear splendid tulasi necklaces around their necks?

6. The devotees may perform Vedic rituals or not perform them. The devotees who taste the wonderful secret nectar of devotional service may accept flower garlands and other things pleasing to the senses, or they may reject them. What foolish non-devotees, who wander aimlessly in this world, have the right to question the actions of Sri Radha's dear devotees, whose hearts have travelled to the farther shore of pure love?

7. Why talk of material things? Why fear millions of hells? I do not fear impersonal liberation. Why should I become mad, like Sukadeva Gosvami and a host of others, after worshipping the Supreme Lord? I would rather that my mind plunges into the nectar at Sri Radha's feet.

8. I cannot forget Sri Radha's beauty, the splendour of Her new youth, Her wonderful and sweet waterpot breasts, the sweetness of Her bimba-fruit lips, Her smile, Her words or Her playful motions.

9. O Sri Radha, O beautiful girl of the forest groves, when will You place Your glance of mercy on me? I yearn to attain the wonderful nectar of eternal service to You, service that the young girls of Vraja, who celebrate a festival of love that fills Laksmi, Sukadeva, Narada and all the demigods, saints and sages with wonder, attained by Your mercy.

10. When, by Radha's mercy, will I become Her maidservant? When will I massage Her beautiful lotus feet as She sleeps? When, again and again tasting the nectar of the very sweet remnants of Her meal, will I become plunged into the ever-new ecstasy of transcendental bliss?

The Killing of the Demon Aghasura




1. One day Krsna decided to take His breakfast as a picnic in the forest. Having risen early in the morning, He blew His bugle made of horn and woke all the cowherd boys and calves with its beautiful sound. Then Krsna and the boys, keeping their respective groups of calves before them, proceeded from Vrajabhumi to the forest.

2. At that time, hundreds and thousands of cowherd boys came out of their respective homes in Vrajabhumi and joined Krsna, keeping before them their hundreds and thousands of groups of calves. The boys were very beautiful, and they were equipped with lunch bags, bugles, flutes, and sticks for controlling the calves.

3. Along with the cowherd boys and their own groups of calves, Krsna came out with an unlimited number of calves assembled. Then all the boys began to sport in the forest in a greatly playful spirit.

4. Although all these boys were already decorated by their mothers with ornaments of kaca, gunja, pearls and gold, when they went into the forest they further decorated themselves with fruits, green leaves, bunches of flowers, peacock feathers and soft minerals.

5. All the cowherd boys used to steal one another's lunch bags. When a boy came to understand that his bag had been taken away, the other boys would throw it farther away, to a more distant place, and those standing there would throw it still farther. When the proprietor of the bag became disappointed, the other boys would laugh, the proprietor would cry, and then the bag would be returned.

6. Sometimes Krsna would go to a somewhat distant place to see the beauty of the forest. Then all the other boys would run to accompany Him, each one saying, "I shall be the first to run and touch Krsna! I shall touch Krsna first!" In this way they enjoyed life by repeatedly touching Krsna.

7. All the boys would be differently engaged. Some boys blew their flutes, and others blew bugles made of horn. Some imitated the buzzing of the bumblebees, and others imitated the voice of the cuckoo. Some boys imitated flying birds by running after the birds' shadows on the ground, some imitated the beautiful movements and attractive postures of the swans, some sat down with the ducks, sitting silently, and others imitated the dancing of the peacocks. Some boys attracted young monkeys in the trees, some jumped into the trees, imitating the monkeys, some made faces as the monkeys were accustomed to do, and others jumped from one branch to another.

8. Some boys went to the waterfalls and crossed over the river, jumping with the frogs, and when they saw their own reflections on the water they would laugh. They would also condemn the sounds of their own echoes.

9. In this way, all the cowherd boys used to play with Krsna, who is the source of the Brahman effulgence for jnanis desiring to merge into that effulgence, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead for devotees who have accepted eternal servitorship, and who for ordinary persons is but another ordinary child. The cowherd boys, having accumulated the results of pious activities for many lives, were able to associate in this way with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How can one explain their great fortune?

10. Thereafter there appeared a great demon named Aghasura, whose death was being awaited even by the demigods. This demon could not tolerate the transcendental pleasure being enjoyed in the forest by the cowherd boys.

11. Aghasura, who had been sent by Kamsa, was the younger brother of Putana and Bakasura. Therefore when he came and saw Krsna as the head of all the cowherd boys, he thought, "This Krsna has killed my sister and brother, Putana and Bakasura. Therefore, in order to please them both, I shall kill this Krsna, along with His assistants, the other cowherd boys."

12. Thus that crooked Aghasura assumed the form of a huge python, as thick as a big mountain and as long as eight miles. Having assumed this wonderful python's body, he spread his mouth like a big cave in the mountains and lay down on the road, expecting to swallow Krsna and His associates the cowherd boys.

13. His lower lip rested on the surface of the earth, and his upper lip was touching the clouds in the sky. The borders of his mouth resembled the sides of a big cave in a mountain, and the middle of his mouth was as dark as possible. His tongue resembled a broad traffic-way, his breath was like a warm wind, and his eyes blazed like fire.

14. Upon seeing this demon's wonderful form, which resembled a great python, the boys thought that it must be a beautiful scenic spot of Vrndavana. Thereafter, they imagined it to be similar to the mouth of a great python. In other words, the boys, unafraid, thought that it was a statue made in the shape of a great python for the enjoyment of their pastimes.

15. Thus they looked at the beautiful face of Krsna, the enemy of Bakasura, and, laughing loudly and clapping their hands, they entered the mouth of the python.

16. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna, who is situated as antaryami, the Supersoul, in the core of everyone's heart, wanted to forbid His associates to enter the demon's mouth.

17. While Krsna was considering how to stop them, all the cowherd boys entered the mouth of the demon. The demon, however, did not swallow them, for he was thinking of his own relatives who had been killed by Krsna and was just waiting for Krsna to enter his mouth.

18. Krsna saw that all the cowherd boys, who did not know anyone but Him as their Lord, had now gone out of His hand and were helpless, having entered like straws into the fire of the abdomen of Aghasura, who was death personified. It was intolerable for Krsna to be separated from His friends the cowherd boys. Therefore, Krsna entered the mouth of Aghasura.

19. When Krsna entered the mouth of Aghasura, the demigods hidden behind the clouds exclaimed, "Alas! Alas!" But the friends of Aghasura, like Kamsa and other demons, were jubilant.

20. When the invincible Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, heard the demigods crying "Alas! Alas!" from behind the clouds, He immediately enlarged Himself within the demon's throat, just to save Himself and the cowherd boys, His own associates, from the demon who wished to smash them.

21. Then, because Krsna had increased the size of His body, the demon extended his own body to a very large size. Nonetheless, his breathing stopped, he suffocated, and his eyes rolled here and there and popped out. The demon's life air, however, could not pass through any outlet, and therefore it finally burst out through a hole in the top of the demon's head.

22. When all the demon's life air had passed away through that hole in the top of his head, Krsna glanced over the dead calves and cowherd boys and brought them back to life. Then Mukunda, who can give one liberation, came out from the demon's mouth with His friends and the calves.

23. From the body of the gigantic python, a glaring effulgence came out, illuminating all directions, and stayed individually in the sky until Krsna came out from the corpse's mouth. Then, as all the demigods looked on, this effulgence entered into Krsna's body.

24. Thus even Aghasura, the most sinful miscreant, was elevated to being one of His associates and achieving sarupya-mukti, which is actually impossible for materially contaminated persons to attain.

25. Thereafter, everyone being pleased, the demigods began to shower flowers from Nandana-kanana, the celestial dancing girls began to dance, and the Gandharvas, who are famous for singing, offered songs of prayer. The drummers began to beat their kettledrums, and the brahmanas offered Vedic hymns. In this way, both in the heavens and on earth, everyone began to perform his own duties, glorifying the Lord.

26. When the python-shaped body of Aghasura dried up into merely a big skin, it became a wonderful place for the inhabitants of Vrndavana to visit, and it remained so for a long, long time.

Bewildered by love for Radha, Krsna was sitting in a dense grove on the Yamuna riverside feeling deeply depressed. Radha’s dear friend came to speak to him and told Radhika's condition. When Krsna heard the moving account of Radha’s pitiful condition from her intimate friend, he suggested, “I will wait here. You should go to Sri Radha, pacify her with my humble appeal and then bring her here.” Engaged thus by Madhuripu Krsna, that sakhi approached Radha and spoke the following words.

“Vanamali Krsna is adorned with a garland of forest flowers and his hands are always restless to inflict pain upon the gopis’ breasts. He is currently waiting in a forest bower on the gentle Malaya-windswept shore of the Yamuna. O young woman with voluptuous hips, Krsna is waiting in the appointed meeting place, which is a perfect setting for lovemaking. He is dressed in the most fascinating attire, exactly like the god of sensuality. Go and meet with the darling of your heart at once. You should not delay any longer.”

“Sakhi, go! Move in the direction of that kunja. Take off these dangerous enemies, your ankle-bells. They talk loudly when you walk and they shake when you enjoy union. Put on this dark blue garment.”

“O Radha, your complexion is yellow like a flash of lightning. You will manifest the beauty of a restless and crooked streak of lightning upon a dark cloud when the result of your pious activities culminates in making love upon Krsna’s chest, which is decorated with a necklace of jewels.”

“Now Sri Krsna is being stubborn. The last period of the night is about to pass, so accept my advice. Go at once, without further delay, and fulfil the desires of Krsna, the enemy of Madhu.”

sri-jayadeve krta-hari-seve bhanati p parama-ramaniyam
pramudita-hrdayam harim ati-sadayam namata sukrta-kamaniyam

Translation
O saints! Krsna is exuberant, causelessly merciful, exceptionally sweet, virtuous and adorned with all desirable qualities. Offer obeisances to him with a joyful heart by reciting this song of Sri Jayadeva, the composer of the most enchanting poetry and the servant of Sri Hari.

vikirati muhuh svasan asah puro muhur iksate
pravisati muhuh kunjam gunjan muhur bahu tamyati
racayati muhuh sayyam paryakulam muhur iksate
madana-kadana-klantah kante priyas tava vartate
Translation
“O impassioned woman, your beloved Krsna is waiting for you in the hidden chamber of a kunja and he is burning with amorous desire. He draws long breaths and looks around with startled eyes. Repeatedly lamenting in indistinct
words, he comes out of the bower of flowering vines and then returns again feeling disappointed. Then he continues to arrange and rearrange the flower bed and glance towards the path of your expected arrival.”

tvad-vamyena samam samagram adhuna tigmamsur astam gato
govindasya manorathena ca samam praptam tamah sandratam
kokanam karuna-svanena sadrsi dirgha mad-abhyarthana
tan-mugdhe viphalam vilambanam asau ramyo ’bhisara-ksanah
Translation
“Along with your contrary mood, the sun has also set. Along with Krsna’s desire, the darkness has also intensified. Like the continuous crying of the lonely cakravaka bird, who laments in pathetic tones during the night, my request has also become futile. O bewildered one, I have been pleading with you for a very long time. Now it is useless to delay any longer. The delightful time for abhisara has arrived.”

aslesad anu cumbanad anu nakhollekhad anu svantajaprodbodhad
anu sambhramad anu ratarambhad anu pritayoh
anyartham gatayor bhraman militayoh sambhasanair janator
dampatyor iha ko na ko na tamasi vrida-vimisro rasah
Translation
“When a hero and heroine search for each other in the dense darkness, the hero meets with another heroine and his heroine meets with another hero by mistake. Only when they begin to converse do they realize their error. After
recognizing each other, they embrace. At first they kiss and then they begin to mark each other with their fingernails. When they become completely overwhelmed by erotic desires and absorbed in passion, they lose their
composure and excitedly begin their love-play. After making love, both will feel an astonishing type of affection. What sort of rasa, mixed with feelings of shame, will not be attained in this darkness? Therefore, O beautiful one,
go! As quickly as possible, go to your sylvan love chamber. Are such excellent opportunities ever to be neglected?”

sa-bhaya-cakitam vinyasyantim drsam timire pathi
prati-taru muhuh sthitva mandam padani vitanvatim
katham api rahah praptam angair ananga-tarangibhih
sumukhi subhagah pasyan sa tvam upaitu krtarthatam
Translation
“O beautiful young woman! Timidly looking around with quickly moving glances, standing close to each tree, then again gradually advancing step by step along the dark path, you will somehow arrive at a secluded place. When the
greatly fortunate Krsna sees you agitated by the waves of kama, his life will be successful.”

radha-mugdha-mukharavinda-madhupas trailokya-mauli-sthalinepathyocita-
nila-ratnam avani-bharavatarantakah
svacchandam vraja-sundari-jana-manas-tosa-pradosodayah
kamsa-dhvamsana-dhumaketur avatu tvam devaki-nandanah
Translation
He is the bumblebee who drinks the honey of Radha’s lotus face. He is the sapphire ornament of Vrndavana, which is itself the crest-jewel of the three worlds. Like nightfall, he is naturally competent to satisfy the beautiful dairy maidens of Vraja. He annihilates the aggressive empiricists who overburden the earth. He is like the star Dhumaketu, foreboding destruction for Kansa. May that Sri Krsna, the son of Devaki, protect you all.
