Indian literary history, warned that in literary terms, India is on the verge of becoming a country as brand-new as America. He gave the keynote speech opening the Jaipur Literature Festival Friday morning. 'It is now entirely gitimate to ask, if dismaying and disturbing, if within two generations there will be anyone in India who will have the capacity of reading Indian literature produced before 1800,' he said. 'I have a feeling that that

Srila Prabhupada Uvaca

One thing Prabhupada liked about California was that it was easy for him to obtain eucalyptus twigs there. Prabhupada used them for brushing his teeth in the morning. He liked them cut the thickness of the little finger and about six inches long, and they were soaked in water overnight before he used them. At this time Krsnadasa was going out in the morning to pick them. He would keep a good supply wrapped up in tin foil in the refrigerator. Hearing that eucalyptus trees were uncommon in Americ

Circumambulating the temple

During his midday massage, which he still takes in his bedroom, Prabhupada suddenly started talking about dreams. He told me that last night he dreamt the temple courtyard was completely flooded. He said he was thinking, "Oh, if it comes even one more inch, everything will be spoiled."

Thinking there might be some significance to his dream, I asked him what dreams were.

Prabhupada replied in a general way, saying that they are impressions stored within the mind, not just

dasa-dasanudasah

Prabhupada had Pradyumna read out the purports to verses 41 and 42 before he gave class. Commenting on how Draupadi offered all respects to the bound-up Asvatthama, despite the fact that he had killed her sleeping sons, he said, "So this is already explained in the purport that woman's nature is very mild, and man's nature very strong. That is the difference. Therefore according to Vedic civilization, the woman must be protected, because they are very simple -- they can be led to

English Fashion

In his class this morning Srila Prabhupada stressed the need to seriously take shelter of a guru. He said that we should not approach a guru for fulfillment of our material desires. "One should go to a guru for spiritual advancement of life, not as a fashion. People go to a guru as a fashion. My Guru Maharaja used to say that 'Don't make a guru just like you keep a dog, as a fashion.' Nowadays it has become a fashion to keep a dog. In the European, American countries it is a compu

Stages of madness

In class Prabhupada spoke about various stages of madness. He told us that pramatta does not mean constitutionally mad, but it means mad by some temporary circumstance. Quoting Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.1.4, he said that actually 99.9% of the world's population are pramatta. Why? Because they think that their husbands, wives, families, nations, bank balance or a strong body will save them from the clutches of Yamaraja, the Lord of death. "Now some of our big sannyasis," Prabhupada sai

Standard of deity worship

Several times over the last few weeks Prabhupada has been disturbed by the poor quality of flowers on the Deity garlands. Sometimes also, the Deities do not even have garlands on when the curtains are opened for Their morning darsana. When Prabhupada greeted Them this morning, he saw that Sri Sri Krsna-Balarama yet again had no garlands. Openly aggravated, he half-turned to Aksayananda and told him sternly, "This is another farce!"

He was so troubled by the poor standard

Being restless

Srila Prabhupada also received a letter from Sharma dasa, the black American devotee who was preaching in Africa last year, but left to go and sit in Mayapur and chant 150 rounds a day. In February, prior to the Gaura Purnima festival, he asked Prabhupada if he could build a tree house because he was disturbed by devotees coming to see him. Then again in March, he asked if he could go to Radha-kunda and chant because his bhajana was being disturbed by visits from his Godbrothers. P

Serving Srila Prabhupada

September 27th, 1976

Srila Prabhupada explained in class this morning the duty of government. Interestingly, despite his many criticisms of the British, he used them as an example of good government. "So two brahmastra weapons released, one by Asvatthama and by Arjuna, it created havoc, catastrophe, and the people were suffering. So this is the duty of the government, to see that everyone is in peaceful condition. During Maharaja Yudhisthira's time they were so happy that

Dogs are condemned species

As I massaged Prabhupada under his mosquito net on the roof tonight, he complained about the dogs barking and yowling in the alleyways. They were disturbing his sleep. He shook his head and told me that a birth as a dog is a most unfortunate situation. Because they are weak from hunger, they fight and yowl. But if you feed them, they become strong, and then they fight even more, making even more disturbance. He said there is no use in feeding them or in taking compassio

English Brain

Srila Prabhupada summoned me into his room on the roof with a ring of his bell at 1:50 a.m. this morning. I went in, offered my obeisances, and when I looked up, Srila Prabhupada told me to sit down. Then he asked me for my opinion on the new arrangements he has made for the Vrndavana management. "Confidentially, what is your opinion of Harikesa?"

I was surprised that he sought my opinion; how could my view of anything be of any possible use to Prabhupada? How could I give advice to

You simply create arguments

In the evening, Srila Prabhupada, Hansaduta Swami and I sat in the back garden. Hansaduta suggested that if Harikesa Maharaja were to travel overland to Europe, he could visit the devotees who have recently set out to open centers in Kabul and Turkey. Thus he could enliven the devotees and also save $200 on his travel expenses. Srila Prabhupada thought it a good idea and so he sent me up into the guest house to get Harikesa.

When I entered his room, Harikesa was sitting

Dealings with devotees

Gurukrpa Swami has arrived from Japan. He came in to see Srila Prabhupada this morning to make his report. As he sat before His Divine Grace with Harikesa to his right, he began telling Prabhupada that his zone was too big. He said he could not visit Hawaii or Australia very much because of the distances and the expense involved. He also said he didn't like to go to Hawaii because he doesn't get along with Sukadeva prabhu and they simply fight whenever he goes.

Prabhupada's sublime character

Prem Yogi returned this afternoon, without his friend, and fully prepared to stay. Prabhupada was so happy to see him that he invited him to sit by his side during his afternoon darsana under the tamala tree in the temple courtyard. Not only that, he even invited him to speak. Prem Yogi's talk however, lasted only five minutes. It was completely Mayavada. He began to describe the glories of Vrndavana-dhama, how one should meditate on the trees, and on the earth, and

Offending spiritual master

Nitai dasa sent Srila Prabhupada a letter today, explaining his reasons for leaving ISKCON. At first, Harikesa Maharaja didn't want to read the letter to Prabhupada because it was so offensive. But when Hansaduta Maharaja saw it, he insisted that it be shown so that we could hear Prabhupada's rebuttals to the points. So this afternoon, after his nap, we went into his room and sat before him. Prabhupada was grave as Harikesa read out the letter. He responded point by poi

Technology means sudra

Prabhupada covered two verses for class. The first verse described how Arjuna pacified Draupadi by promising to capture and kill Asvattama. Prabhupada said that although the son of a brahmana, Asvattama had actually behaved like a butcher. He was an aggressor, and, according to Vedic law, should be killed immediately. Therefore it was not incorrect for Arjuna to decide to kill him.

In describing the Vedic educational system of training a person to work according to his varna

Reply to the Blitz Article - 2

Skipping to another section of the article, Pradyumna went on, "Here he says, 'The mission of the present avatara is to make everybody realize that since the same God or divinity resides in everyone, people should respect, love, and ...'"

Prabhupada cut in. "No, no. If he resides in everyone, then why he has special claim?"

"Yes. Well, he says he has remembered."

"He remembers?" Prabhupada asked. "How God can forget?"

"That he says here. He says that, 'Take paddy or ric

Reply to the Blitz Article - 1

Pradyumna prabhu had a lengthy meeting with Srila Prabhupada this afternoon to finalize his reply to the Blitz article on Sai Baba. Pradyumna read from the opening paragraph of the article which was entitled "God is an Indian." "'His contemporary avatara rests in the trinity of Sirti Baba, Sai Baba, and Prem Baba to come. So Satya Sai Baba, the second of the triple incarnation, asserted in the course of a marathon interview to add, 'In my present avatara, I have com
