Kirtan in the 16th Century

Mukunda Goswami:

"How did Lord Caitanya do kirtan in the sixteenth century? What did the chanting parties look like?"

Srila Prabhupada:

"Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami writes of this in his Caitanya Caritamrita. There were two mrdunga players, two dancers and seven karatalas. Other people would join in, but the main ones - the mrdungas, karatala men and the dancers - they were the center...

"When (the) leader chanted, drums and cymbals would play quiet, so everyone could hear. Then when everyone sang, drums and karatalas played loud. And when the leader sang again, they would play soft again. So soft and loud, they would go on in that way, and repeat."
