I begin my day by asking myself the question, “How can I be of service to someone?” I have found this to be useful in reminding me of the multitude of ways that I can be helpful to others. When I take the time to ask this question, I find answers popping up all day long.

If one of your goals is to be of help to others, you will find the most appropriate ways. Your chances to be of service are endless. The key, I believe, is to remember that being of service isn’t a one-time effort. It’s not doing

Try something different

Most people are stuck right where they are. The reason they’re stuck, however, isn’t usually due to circumstances, incompetence, or lack of opportunity, but a simple unwillingness to change, to try new things.

We can make smaller, inner changes on a day-to-day, moment to moment basis – changes in our attitude, reactions, and expectations. I’m talking about being willing to take new risks, and face old fears.

Over and over again I hear people saying things like “I’ve always done things that way” o

Almost everyone feels that their own opinions are good ones; otherwise they wouldn’t be sharing them with you. One of the destructive things that many of us do, however, is compare someone else’s opinion to our own. And, when it doesn’t fall in line with our belief, we either dismiss it or find fault with it. We feel smug, the other person feels diminished, and we learn nothing.

Almost every opinion has some merit, especially if we are looking for merit, rather than looking for errors. The next t

Evening class

Srila Prabhupada attended the 7pm arati kirtana, smiling broadly from his large maroon and gold vyasasana, enjoying the enthusiastic affair. While chanting, some of the devotees ran the full length of the temple, leaping exuberantly at Prabhupada's feet. They turned and then ran back, repeating the procedure at the Deity room end.

Prabhupada spoke on Chapter 9 of Bhagavad-gita, verse 4:

"By Me, in my unmanifested form, this entire universe is pervaded. All beings are in Me, but I am n

Meeting with men from the Mormon church

After lunch, Srila Prabhupada met with two young men from the Mormon church. They were respectful and seemed to appreciate the disciplined life of Krsna consciousness.

"What do you feel is the greatest order of God?" asked one.

"To surrender to Him," replied Srila Prabhupada.

The conversation was long and amicable, although Prabhupada did not compromise his stance, particularly on meat-eating. "Christ says: 'Thou shall not kill'," he said. "They are maintainin

Talk About the Absolute

Talk About the Absolute

by Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupad

[A Talk to Mr. William Henri John Vandorstok of Batavia on 26.12.1935.]

In India as in Europe we find people hold different views but all of them may be classed into three divisions. One class of people are seekers of fruits by their action. Another class wish to annihilate themselves. And the third class want in their true selves as absolute infinitesimals, to be in touch with the Absolute Infinity rejecting all non-abso

Krishna Consciousness

Hare Krsna

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

The aim of this Krishna consciousness movement is to bring all living entities back to their original consciousness. All living entities within the material world are, to varying degrees, afflicted with a type of madness. This Krishna consciousness movement aims at curing man of his material disease and reestablishing his original consciousness. In a Bengali poem a great Vaisnava poet has written, "When a man is haunted

Srivas’ Level of Surrender

Hare Krsna

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja

We should completely depend on the will of Krishna. Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita that he will take up the responsibility to maintain a surrendered devotee. "Whatever the devoteelacks," Krishna says, vahamy aham — "I personally carry it."
Srivas Pandit was not doing any business or going out to earn money. Day and night, twenty-four hours, he was engaged in sravana-kirtana and b

On the Way to Krsna

In this way there are different degrees of happiness.  Yet of all of them, what is the highest happiness. Sri Krsna tells Arjuna:

sukham atyantikam yat tad

buddhi-grahyam atindriyam

vetti yatra na caivayam

sthitas calati tattvatah

"In that joyous state (samadhi), one is situated in boundless transcendental happiness and enjoys himself through transcedental senses. Established thus, one never departs from the truth." (Bg. 6.21)

Rama and Krishna

Hare Krsna

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

An explanation of the word rama is given in the Padma Purana. The word comes from the Sanskrit root ram, which transforms to ramanteRamante means fulfilling pleasures and desires. ramante  yogino `nante — Amongst those who are yogis, thebhakti-yogi is the topmost. Bhagavad-gita (6.47) says

KRSNA'S MOST INTIMATE COMPANIONS

KRSNA'S MOST INTIMATE COMPANIONS

by Swami B.V. Tripurari

"Priyanarma sakhas like Subala taste mahabhava in a way similar to the gopis. Thus their development of prema exceeds that of devotees in vatsalya rasa."

Q. Where can I find information as to how Gaudiya Vaisnavism refutes other Vaisnava philosophies? What are the source references wherein these issues have been specifically addressed?

A. The Gaudiya position on all issues of tattva is clearly presented in Sri Jiva Goswami's sixfold treatise

Thought Of The Day

So the Krsna consciousness movement is so important. If people simply learn this, that everything belongs to Krsna... Isavasyam idam sarvam. Sarvam means "everything." Not that "This much is mine, this much is Krsna's." No. Sarvam. Isavasyam idam sarvam yat kinca jagatyam jagat, tena tyaktena bhunjithah... Simply we shall use as much He has allotted for us. Then there is peace and prosperity, without any difficulty. Otherwise, you go on adjusting your material possessions; the time will take awa

The Scar Of Love

Hare Krsna

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.
He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother in the house was looking out the w

The Wings Of Burden

Hare Krsna

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

An old legend relates that long ago God had a great many burdens which He wished to have carried from one place to another on earth, so He asked the animals to lend a hand. But all of them began to make excuses for not helping: the elephant was too dignified; the lion, too proud; and so on. Finally the birds came to God and said, "If you will tie the burdens into small bundles, we'll be glad to carry them for you. We ar
