  • Wearing saffron and keeping head shaved is prescribed for those in the renounced order. For those not in the order, the dressing prescribed is that which promotes simplicity.

    Srila Prabhupada prescribed Simple Living High thinking, and try not wasting too much time on contemplating what to wear and what not to wear. In that way we can dedicate more time to Krishna Conscious activities.

    So its not illegal if you wear jeans, but its a waste of time to contemplate keeping up with trends and trying to find the latest way to look nice.

    Wearing saffron clothes and shaving the head not necessary.

    The goal is to live our life while taking the Holy Names of the Lord constantly.

    Yes you can wear western or local attire, Rajstanani, Punjabi, whatever. It is best to wear Indian traditional clothes when visiting a temple for better ambiance.

    Wearing orange clothes, at least in America people are less likely to go into bars to get drunk etc. It was strictly enforced to maintain higher moral standards here. I am sure when someone wears orange clothes in India, they will be less likely to stare at women etc so it is a good thing.

    Keeping the hair long in the the calic area/or where the crown chakra is, is known to increase intelligence. In the ancient India, this used to be the hairstyle. So why not bring this hair syle back?

  • Hare Krishna,
    It is stated in Srimad Bhagvatam "lavanyam kesa-dharanam" In Kali yuga People will think by keeping long hairs they will become beautiful. So Vaishnavas to rise above the bodily conception shave off their heads.
    And as other devotees have clearly explained about the saffron robes.

    HareKrishna,

    We should always keep the saffron colour in our heart. Krishna likes saffron colour. If we do not wear saffron before death, Krishna will wrap us in saffron colour. This happens because when the body is cremated the flames of the fire are saffron in colour and this way Krishna wraps us in saffron. {Read More...}

  • Hare krishna,

    Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Saffron robes signifies that our 8 inner foes namely lust, anger, greed, jealous etc are burning in the fire.. saffron denotes that fire which burns down all the inner foes...

    Hair denotes our karma. So head is shaved. Another reason which Srila Prabhupada said is that very long hair denotes beauty. So the devotees do not want to look beautiful and be in bodily conception of life..
