  • Hare Kṛṣṇa dear Akshit Prabhu,

The churning of the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthan) was performed by the devatās and asuras to obtain amṛta, the nectar of immortality. After the curse of Durvāsā Muni, the demigods had lost their strength, so on the advice of Lord Viṣṇu, they cooperated with the asuras to churn the ocean and regain their power. Many divine treasures appeared during this churning; Lakṣmī Devī, Airāvata, the Kaustubha jewel, Dhanvantari, and finally the pot of nectar.

It was the Ocean of Milk (Kṣīra Sāgara), which is considered a special, celestial ocean in the higher planetary systems. It is not an ordinary earthly ocean; it is the abode of Lord Viṣṇu in His form as Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu.

You can read this entire pastime in Canto 8 of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

These chapters beautifully describe the cause of the churning, how it was done, and all the wonderful personalities and items that appeared from the ocean. Your eagerness to know these pastimes is wonderful. Hari Hari.

    • Thank you prabhuji

  • Hare Krishna 🙏

The churning of the Ocean of Milk was done to obtain amṛta, the nectar of immortality, so the Devas could regain their lost strength.
The ocean was special because it was the Kṣīra Sāgara, a divine cosmic ocean where Lord Viṣṇu resides.

You can read the full incident in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Canto 8 (Chapters 5–12).

    Hare Krsna

Why was the event of churning of ocean done?

Similar question was asked by Parikshit Maharaj to Shukadeva Goswami in SB Canto 8

Indra King of devas was given a garland by sage Durvasa. Indra accepts that garland and put it on his elephant carrier Airavata. Garland attracted bees. Airavata was irritated by bees, so Airavata puts garland on ground and tramples it. Sage Durvasa sees this as disrespect. Durvasa curses Indra that he will lose his kingdom.

Asuras attack devas. Devas are defeated badly. Devas are bereft of strength, wealth, comforts etc. In order to regain their opulence devas approach Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva and demigods together approach Kshirodakasayi Vishnu who was lying on milk ocean. Lord Vishnu advises them to churn Kshirodaka ocean which contains valuable resources most important of which is Amruta which prolongs life and gives strength.

What was special about that ocean?

This is Kshirodaka or ocean of milk. This is situated above Brahma loka. Lord Vishnu lives in this ocean.

where can I find the incident to read about it?
