Origin of Bhagavatm

Hare Krishna devotees,

PAMHO.

We hear many narrations of appearance of Shrimad Bhagavatam (SB).

First - Siva narrating to Parvati.

Second - The complete Bhagavatam being available at Brahmaloka

Third - Vyasdev giving Knowledge of SB to Sukadev Goswami

Fourth - Suta narrating to the sages assembled

Fifth - Vyasdev compiling the text for welfare of society by instruction of Narada Muni where he sat on meditation and got revelation.

My question is if SB was written by Vyasdev on instructions of Narada muni after which he performed austerities and got revelation to write SB, how come he mentions of this SB being narrated to Parikshit Maharaj and later suta goswami which all are the events happpened afterwards.

Also Some say he was able to see the future which is also fine but if Parikshit knew he would act in such a way then why couldnt he correct himself?

Pleease clarify.

Thanks in advance.

Vyasadeva, as a maha-yogi and empowered avatar, wasn’t limited by linear time. When Narada Muni inspired him to reveal the SB, Vyasa accessed divine vision (yoga-siddhi) to perceive past, present, and future (like Parikshit’s story). Think of it like a seer watching a river from a hill—seeing the entire flow at once.

As for Parikshit: Knowing his fate (a snake-bite curse) didn’t mean he could “rewrite” it. In the Vedic worldview, karma is fixed once set in motion. But Parikshit used his 7 days wisely—hearing the SB to attain liberation. His story isn’t about avoiding death, but embracing life’s ultimate purpose: transcendence.

The SB existed eternally in sabda-brahman (spiritual sound). Vyasadeva compiled it for humanity, while sages like Suta and Sukadev later disseminated it through time. Different narrations (Shiva, Brahma, etc.) reflect its flow through the guru-parampara—timeless wisdom adapting to moments, yet always complete. Hari Hari.

Veda Vyas ji is called Trikaal gyani and He is not simply called by the name Krishna dwaipayana Vyasa.  He is also one of the incarnations of Vishnu. There are not 10 incarnations but there are 24 incarnations of Vishnu in all. Veda Vyas ji is immortal and chiranjeevi. He is Trikaal darshi and Trikaal gyan. He gave Divya chakshu to Sanjaya also to see the Mahabharat Yudh from far away sitting with Dritharashtra away from war site.

According to the time traveller Kaak Basundhi a crow ( sage) who could travel to many yugas saw 11 times Ramayana happening and 16 times Mahabharata happening in various universes and everytime there is a new outcome and new story the characters maybe same but outcome is different with small changes.

Do you no think Vedavyas didn't know all these before hand?

Narad muni is also Trikaal darshi and dev rishi if He had instructed surely He should have given  him all instructions for writing the Divya granth ( divine book) everything before hand..

Valmiki ji also was trikaal darshi sage. He wrote Ramayan before the advent of Shree Rama itself.

These people had divya chakshu or divya dhristhi as they were given instruction from dev rishi Narad muni Himself.

    Hare Krsna

Sri Krsna is the Supreme personality of Absolute truth. Sri Krsna has many manifestations like His names, forms, qualities, pastimes/leela etc. Srimad Bhagavatam is same as personality of Sri Krsna in the form of Krsna's leela.

Si Krsna's leela is transcendental, eternal and unlimited. Similarly Srimad Bhagavatam is also eternal, transcendental & unlimited.

When it is time for Srimad Bhagavatam manifest within this material world, then Sri Krsna gives this seva to some extrardinary devotees. Exampels of devotees who are empowered and are involved in manifestation of Srimad Bhagavatam are Shukadeva Goswami, King Parikshit, Lord Shiva, Sri Vyasadeva, etc. Srimad Bhagavatam manifests unlimited number of times.

if SB was written by Vyasdev on instructions of Narada muni after which he performed austerities and got revelation to write SB, how come he mentions of this SB being narrated to Parikshit Maharaj and later suta goswami which all are the events happpened afterwards.

In Srimad Bhagavatam there is no specific instruction given by Narada Muni to Vyasa deva to perform austerities to get revelation to write SB. Nor is there any specific mention of Vyasa deva performing any particular austerities specifically to get revelation of SB. Narada Muni in fact says you already are aware of Srimad Bhagavtaam, you simply have to present it for the benefit of people.

    tvam apy adabhra-śruta viśrutaṁ vibhoḥ
    samāpyate yena vidāṁ bubhutsitam
    prākhyāhi duḥkhair muhur arditātmanāṁ
    saṅkleśa-nirvāṇam uśanti nānyathā

Please, therefore, describe the almighty Lord’s activities which you have learned by your vast knowledge of the Vedas, for that will satisfy the hankerings of great learned men and at the same time mitigate the miseries of the masses of common people who are always suffering from material pangs. Indeed, there is no other way to get out of such miseries.(SB 1.5.40)

The above shloka is said by Sri Narada Muni to Vyasa deva. After obtaining the instuctions from Sri Narada Muni, Vyasa deva compiled the shlokas of Srimad Bhagavatam. This Srimad Bhagavatam was taught orally to Vyasa deva's son Shukadeva goswami. Shukadeva Goswami narrated Srimad Bhagavatam orally to Parikshit Maharaja. Suta Goswami also heard Srimad Bhagavatam along with Parikshit Maharaja. Suta Goswami then narrated Srimad Bhagavatam orally to sage Shaunaka.

This narration of Bhagavatam by Suta Goswami was then compiled in written form by Vyasadeva specifically for people of Kali yuga who have limited memory.

This written form of Bhagavatam is now available to us in English (& other ) language by efforts of Srila Prabhupada.

So the Bhagavatam which Parikshit Maharaja heard or Shukadeva Goswami heard does not contain story of Parikshit Maharaj being cursed. But Parikshit Maharaja being saved by Sri Krsna might have been heard by Shukadeva Goswami. irrespective of that Srimad bhagavatam for us starts with what Vyasa deva has given us in written form.
