My friend is an Advaitin/Vedantin and also Krishna Baktha. He wants to apply the urdhava pundra tilak of iskcon, but he feels like applying it would be against Vaishnavas as Vaishnavas are against the Advaita Vedanta.

Understand the purpose of applying tilak rather than philosophy. I apply tilak which is made of vrindavan raj, yamuna raj and gangal jal which purifies you. The purpose of it is to please Krsna and purify your existence.

No restriction in wearing urdhva punda tilak by anyone. Our philosophy is acintya bhed abhed. It is advaita, dvaita put together.
If one is inspired by this philosohy or chanting the holy names, then why think so much?
Do you think God is petty ? He will see wrong tilak and ignore the person or get offended? He sees the bhaav in our hearts, it has nothing to do with tilak we put on our heads.
