Initiation ceremony

Philip: When I came up to receive my beads, Srila Prabhupada asked me whether I was Australian. I answered no, that I was born in England. He asked me my age and I answered that I was eighteen. "So young!" he said. Prabhupada handed me my beads and said: "So, your name is Kurma dasa. Kurma is another name of Krsna. You are Kurma dasa, servant of Krsna."

Initiation

The devotees had originally expected that perhaps three or four of them would be initiated. Earlier that morning, however, the news had spread quickly that Prabhupada would be initiating practically everyone in the temple -- 16 devotees in all.

The young men and women sat nervously before Srila Prabhupada. The men were shaven-headed and wore dhotis made of cheap synthetic peach-coloured material. The ladies were wrapped in saffron saris fashioned from the same simple cloth. Those who we

Prabhupada cooking

By the time Srila Prabhupada returned from his bath, applied marks of Vaisnava tilak, and chanted his noon-time gayatri mantra, his lunch was ready. Upananda had cooked the dal, rice and vegetables at the temple, and had sent them over to the house. While Prabhupada bathed, Bali-mardana -- who couldn't cook -- had frantically attempted to make chapatis, but the apartment was equipped with only an electric stove. As Srila Prabhupada sat, Vegavan ran in with the first hot chapati

Gradual Process..

Question: What if I can only chant Hare Krsna right now, but I can't do much service?Answer: Chanting Hare Krsna is service. However, when you are chanting “Hare Krsna,” you are also requesting service. After chanting, don't be surprised when you are awarded more service. And then when Krsna gives you service, there may be a question about how much service you should take.On the one hand, Krsna advises in the Gita (18.66) that we simply surrender to Him. And this is actually the main business of

Biography of H . H. Jayapataka Swami

The success of His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in spreading Krsna Consciousness around the world starting from North America basically is definitely an amazing achievement for a great personality empowered by the Lord Himself  to fulfill an almost impossible mission in Kali Yuga in a very short time, but this success of Srila Prabhupada is also because of the inspiration that His Divine Grace have given to young people in the western societies during a very important

Ram Naam Mahima

During the construction of the celebrated Rama-setu, Lord Rama wondered how the stones thrown by the monkeys were floating. One night, He went alone to the coast to test if stones thrown by Him would float too. To His embarrassment, every one of His stones sank. When He looked around to see if anybody had noticed His failure, He saw His beloved servitor-monkey Hanuman standing behind, smiling. Rama enquired, "Hanuman, how is that your stones float, but Mine sink?" Hanuman folded his hands and sa

Do You Have Human or Animal Conciousness?

Do You Have Human or Animal Consciousness?

If you simply eat, sleep, mate, and enjoy material life. Then you are no different from the animals. The animals also eat, sleep, mate, and enjoy material life. In fact, if you simply want to engage in these activities, then you are better off in the animal kingdom. The animals engage in all these activities without the bother of jobs, bills, marital problems and other humanly conditions of life.

Those humans who spent their life simply eating, sleeping,

final jourey of H.G. Achyut Govind Prabhu

HG Ramsharan Prabhu 20 Mar 2011
On 20th March Sunday, I received a call from Achyut Govind Prabhu’s father that he is vomiting incessantly and did not sleep for the whole day. I arranged for his coming to the hospital again and getting the water in his abdomen tapped out, after discussing thoroughly with Dr.Vineeta. Next day when I visited him he felt better, we had a short kirtan and a small discussion about the final journey and the mercy of the lord. Achyut Govind Prabhu requested, “Can we si

Kamada Ekadasi from the Varaha Purana.

Sri Suta Goswami said, "Oh sages, let me offer my humble and respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Lord Hari, Bhagavan Sri Krishna, the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, by whose mercy I can describe the fast day that removes all kinds of sins.  It was to the devoted Yudhisthira that Lord Krishna glorified the twenty-four primary Ekadasiis, which destroy sin, and now I shall recount one of those narrations to you. Great-learned sages have selected these twenty-fo

I was surprised when the Congress party gave me a Padma Shri — I am the only foreign journalist to ever get it. For, in my 40 years of political reporting in India, I have always been a vocal critic of the Nehru dynasty. Someone recently even called me "a vitriolic British journalist, who in his old age chose to live back in the land he never approved".
