A talk by Giriraj Swami, September 5, 2010, Sri Vrindavan Dham, Kazakhstan.

Hearing His Holiness Niranjana Swami’s wonderful talk, I felt we were being elevated to the spiritual world. He quoted from Vishnujana Maharaja. Vishnujana had a program in which he went by boat along the Ganges River, in Bengal, and chanted the holy names all day, stopping at villages along the way and chanting and speaking and distributing books about Krishna. Once, when I was in Los Angeles recovering from being sick

Zestfulness by Bhaktimarga Swami

My day started with zestful walking in the temple of Radha Radhanath.  I did circle motions within the room while other chanters paced back and forth, and others still just sat while fingering their beads and simultaneously moving lips to chant.  Occasionally, I would stop to talk to a maharaja, a senior monk, or to acknowledge someone I've known, and who had just arrived in town for the festival.  I noticed two new fellows.  They were from Cape Town.  I stopped to talk.

"How are you guys?  Ho

When Master Becomes A Servant

Krishna-Arjuna-Mahabharat-_250000-29.jpg

"If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go for a picnic. If you want happiness for a month, get married. If you want happiness for a lifetime, serve others." - Chinese Proverb

When and where have we seen a master take the role of a servant? Probably never or if at all, very rarely. Here, I would like to briefly touch upon a few touching stories from the life of Lord Krishna, who even though is The Supreme Master of everything and

The Glories of Varuthini Ekadasi: Sri Yudhisthira Maharaj said, “Oh Vasudeva, I offer my most humble obeisances unto You. Please now describe to me the Ekadasi of the dark fortnight (krsna paksha) of the month of Vaisakha (April-May), including its specific merits and influence.”

Lord Sri Krishna replied, “Oh King, in this world and the next, the most auspicious and magnanimous Ekadasi is Varuthini Ekadasi, which occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Vaisakha.

Vrndavana Dasa was born in Mamagachi in the Navadvipa area of West Bengal. His mother was Narayani, the niece of Srivasa Pandita.

Vrndavana Dasa’s father, Vaikunthanatha Vipra, was from Sylet in East Bengal. However, it is said that his father died before he was born and so his mother moved to the house of Srivasa in Mayapur.

In his youth Vrndavana Dasa took initiation from Lord Nityananda and he was apparently the last disciple that Nityananda accepted.

In 1535, Vrndavana Dasa wrote the Chaita

As per Vaishnava calender, today is the disappearance day of Sri Vrindavana Dasa Thakura.  His Sripat is located in Mamagachi, in Modadrumadvipa, one of the nine islands of Navadvipa. During annual Navadvipa Mandal Parikrama, devotees visit this holy place.  Sri Kavi karnapura reveals in his Gaura ganoddesha dipika that Srila Vedavyasa incarnated as Vrindavan Das Thakur in Lord Caitanya’s pastimes. Krishna’s friend Kusumapida also entered into him for special purposes. Srila Vrindavana Das Thak

The Six Waves of Time – Part 2

2515289714?profile=original

By Kadamba Kanana Swami

In the Eleventh Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam there is a chapter entitled the Bhumi Gita – the song of the earth. The earth is explaining, “So many have tried to possess me, to control me, lord it over me. And now what remains of them? Only names.” So we see that influence of time which destroys everything and takes everything away. It is painful to lose one’s influence, to lose one’s power. It is painful to become old, but there also is an advantage, if one is engaged

At the Johannesburg Airport yesterday, a young black Uber man, accustomed to securing passengers at arrivals, saw me and was about to make his pitch.  Before he could complete a sentence, I said, "I already have a ride!"

"That's okay.  So you're a monk?" he asked.  I would say he was quite ‘lit’, as they say.  "It's amazing to meet you.  You must be so enlightened."

I did not sense an ounce of sarcasm in him.  He was very genuine.  Without knowing me personally, he went on about how some

Slight Limp by Bhaktimarga Swami

People are noticing a slight limp in my walk.  It's been there for a little while now.  I would attribute this imperfection in my movement to the long distances of walking on roads where the shoulders slant.  At least one Oriental chiropractic therapist in Toronto told me to make a deliberate straight thrust forward with both the right and the left legs.  I know that he is correct, that I must simply de-program myself from the very conditioning my body has gone through to create this tilt in my

Step Out To Step Up

Don't live the same day over and over again and call that a life. Life is about evolving mentally, spiritually and emotionally. -  Germany Kent

We all have our own comfort zones which we don't want to leave. Why? Because life is very predictable and set according to our convenience. "Why should you leave all this to embrace a life of risk, unpredictability and inconvenience", reasons the mind. This may be true but it also true that life without challenges is not lif

The Hare Krishna movement was built on a pioneering spirit. Srila Prabhupada was the original pioneer who then empowered three couples – Mukunda and Janaki, Shyamasundara and Malati (with their baby Sarasvati), and Gurudasa and Yamuna – with a dream to start a center in London and meet the biggest band in the world, the Beatles, to help spread Krishna Consciousness.
The couples arrived in London in September 1968, and by Christmas, they were chanting Hare Krishna with the Beatles themselves! On

We may read or hear some gurus say that Sri Vrndavana Dhama is the land of Sambhoga, or meeting with Lord Krishna. Devotees might think this is at odds with what Srila Prabhupada taught us in Krishna Book and Srimad Bhagavatam tenth canto. Does not Vipralambha occur in Vrndavana?

Have we ever considered why Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu exhibited His most elevated ecstatic emotions, not in Navadvipa or Vrndavana-dhama, but in Jagannatha-puri?

One answer is that Sri Jagannatha-puri is also referred t

Allow me to give you a little flavour of South Africa.  Mangoes are sweet.  So are bananas.  Papayas, too. It all depends on the season.

The people are sweet too.  However, there are some issues.

Phodiso is a twenty-seven year old fellow from the Pretoria area.  We had him cast as Krishna in our drama.  He has the persona down and the build with a warm face.  Masculine, but moves with grace.  Phodiso received a call today and was told to get back home right away. His cousin was murdered,

Is a devotee also an eco-warrior?

By Parasuram das

For the last 11 days and nights a massive eco demonstration has taken place around the planet, here in London 5 main traffic arteries have been blocked by concerned activists and over a thousand people arrested. Hitting the headlines of every newspaper, constantly covered by every form of media, and now supported by many politicians, school children and community leaders.

So what has that got to do with Krishna Consciousness? We are not environmentalists or eco-warriors!

It’s always a pleasure visiting our Perth temple. Although a long way across to the west coast of Australia, the devotees are enthusiastic to receive visitors.

I was able to attend three or four Bhakti Vrksa and Namahatta programs where we had kirtan, Bhagavad-Gita study, more kirtan and prasadam.
