Hare Krishna Friends,

One day as I was passing by the elephants, I suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.

No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did
not. I saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away.

"Well," he said, "when they are v

Pastimes of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with Gopala Capala

It appears that although Gopala Capala was sinful, talkative and insulting, he nevertheless had the qualification of simplicity. Thus he believed Caitanya Mahaprabhu to be the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who had come to deliver all fallen souls, and he appealed for his own deliverance, seeking the mercy of the Lord. He did not know, however, that the deliverance of the fallen does not consist of curing their bodily diseas

The Rain of Krsna Consciousness

Constant transmigration of the soul from one body to another is the
cause of suffering in material existence. This conditional life in
material existence is called saḿsāra. One may perform good work and
take his birth in a very nice material condition, but the process
under which birth and death take place is like a terrible fire.

Śrī Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura, in his prayer to the spiritual
master, has described this. Saḿsāra, or the repetition of birth and
death, is compared to a forest fire. A f

Life is meant for inquiring.

Life is meant for inquiring.

srimad.jpgSo what should be the inquisitiveness in this human form of life? Therefore the Vedanta-sutra says: athato brahma jijnasa. Now this life is meant for inquiring about the Supreme Absolute Truth, or Krsna. Krsna is the Absolute Truth, ultimate goal. So that is human life, when we inquire about. Therefore those who are inquisitive about God, they are not ordinary persons. They have been described in the Bhagavad-gita as sukrtina. Sukrtina means background is pious. Jus

Watering the root

Watering the root

Actually our position is that we are always rendering service to someone, either to our family, country, or society. If we have no one to serve, sometimes we keep a pet cat or dog and render service to it. All these factors prove that we are constitutionally meant to render service, yet in spite of serving to the best of our ability, we are not satisfied. Nor is the person to whom we are rendering that service satisfied. On the material platform, everyone is frustrated.

Qualities of Jagat Guru

(6) One should search out a bona fide spiritual master who can lead him gradually to the stage of spiritual realization, and one must submit himself to such a spiritual master, render him service and ask relevant questions.

Srila Rupa Gosvami describes the qualities of a bona fide spiritual master: "A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the mind's demands, the actions of anger, and the urges of the tongue, belly, and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world." A guru

Why Lord Shiva Smokes Marijuana?

Question: Why Lord Shiva Smokes Marijuana?

My dear Gurudeva,

I beg to clarify a doubt. A Muslim friend of mine argued that Lord Shiva is considered as the greatest Vaishnava, but yet he contradicts Vaishnava principles by smoking marijuana. Why does Lord Shiva smoke marijuana, even though he is considered to be the greatest Vaishnava?

Surender K.

Answer: He Can Smoke It, While We Cannot.

Just as the sun is so powerful it can extract water from urine without being polluted, Lord Shiva is so powerful

First authorised Parampara edition of Bhagavad-gita

In early February 1970, Bali-mardana arrived in Sydney -- Australia's largest city -- with practically no money and only a few Back to Godhead magazines. The young couple with whom Bali-mardana had corresponded picked him up at the airport and accommodated him for a few days in their house in an outer Sydney suburb. They were friendly and willing to help, and although not really interested in Krsna consciousness, had helped him so far. Bali-mard

Lord Caitanya desired that the Indians should preach

Upendra was now resigned to the fact that he was on his way to Australia. After briefly training Nanda Kumara to replace him as Prabhupada's cook, he busied himself reading travel brochures and collecting money for his fare.

Australia at the time had quite a conservative immigration policy. One requirement was that a large amount of money, $1,500, had to be shown to Immigration upon arrival. Upendra managed to collect the fare, but could not rai

Once there was a sweeper in a well known temple and he was very sincere and devoted.

Every time he saw thousands of devotees coming to take darshan of the Lord,

he thought that the Lord is standing all the time and giving darshan and He must be feeling very tired.

So one day very innocently he asked the Lord whether he can take the place of the Lord for a day

so that the Lord can have some relief and rest.

The Deity of Temple replied, "I do not mind taking a break.

I will transform you like Myself,

Questions asked by devotees and answered by His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami

Question: According to this statement Srila Prabhupada tells that the souls which are expanded through the material energy of the supreme are the conditioned souls, as we know getting conditioned means thinking ourselves the enjoyer and controller because of which we are suffering. So according to that the jivas are sufferings because they were expended by mat

Story – The unknown fast

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma, whilst resting on a bed of arrows and  discoursing on Dharma, refers to the observance of Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu. The story goes as follows.

Once, King Chitrabhanu was observing a fast with his wife, and it was the day of Maha  Shivaratri. The sage Ashtavakra came on a visit to the king’s court.

The sage asked, “ O king why are you observing a fast today?” King Chitrabhanu explained the reason, as he had th

would you eat a child?

Animals and children are alike in that they are both helpless and ignorant. Because a child is ignorant, that doesnot mean we can kill him. Similarly, although animals may be ignorant or unintelligent, we shouldnot kill them unnecessarily. A reasonable man, a religious man should discriminate. He should think, "If i can get my food from vegetables, fruits and milk, why should i kill and eat animals?" Besides, when you get a fruit from a tree, there is no killing. Similarly, when we take milk fro
