From what I have heard from senior devotees is that ideal time for one round of japa is in between 6 and half min to a maximum of 8 min. Any thing less than 6 and half means we are skipping some of the words - Hare Krishna and Rama or moving 2 beads at a time. Any time more than 8 min means we are sleeping in our japa.
We chant 16 rounds daily and ideally it should take anything in between 1:45 - 2:00 hours.
If I chant too slow (10 -12 minutes for one round), random thoughts comes to my mind or feel like sleeping, However if I chant at medium pace ( 7 minutes), I could concentrate more on the mantra words.

yes that is how we are taught to chat in the beginning. Or in a group when we chant in the initial days it would take that long.
