I understand that the answers here are from all learned and pure devotees. However is it possible to provide some scriptural evidences.

From childhood we have been taught to say "hare ram" "हरे राम", "sitaram"

While chanting I visualize the hindi sylabble "हरे राम" and chant also as "हरे राम"

How does bengali's write, read and pronounce  "हरे राम"?. How does Chaitanya Mahaprabhu taught?

I know it doesn't matters to those who can't pronounce "कृष्ण " or "राम" due to language/accent problems. But since I can (as I know hindi) I would like to pronounce it correctly.

      Hare Krishna Mata Ji.

The original Sanskrit verse clearly Kali-santaraṇa Upaniṣad says:

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare

hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare

      iti ṣoḍaśakaṁ nāmnāṁ kali-kalmaṣa-nāśanam

      nātaḥ parataropāyaḥ sarva-vedeṣu dṛśyate

So Rama is the correct pronunciation even according to sastra. Also Srila Prabhupada said the same. But due to different accents of people in different cultures it is pronounced like "Ram"

or "Ramo". But after all that really matters is our devotion and love not whether we say Ram or Rama.

I got your point. It's just that in hindi which is pretty much similar to sanskrit in script says  "राम" and not "rama" in many non-ISKCON books.

That's why I was asking for some scriptural evidence written in sanskrit.

Anyways as you said what really matters is our devotion and love and not pronunciation.

        So no Issues...

        Thank you.

it is said that syllable "Ra" cleans all sins and syllable "ma" closes the door to other sins. In this way we have to try to chant as "Rama" even if it is difficult. Then only we will feel full potency of the Name.

      Your servant,

  • hare krsna hare rama..sri rama rama ramethi rame rame manorame sahasranamathathulyam rama nama varanane..from vishnusahasranamam..and srilaprabhupad chants 'rama' very clearly..we shouldnt be adamant in following it i suppose..we all are neophytes ..so try 2 follow him atleast..sorry if i hurt anyone..hari bol

    Hare Krsna P

    humble obeisances

    " it is RAAM =( र + आ + म + अ ) ( r + aa + m + a)"

This is not true pronunciation of Raam in Hindi.here there is no syllable after म , if u pronounce it RAAM. Also you have added a after m which is not there in the Holy name.

and m not saying it as Raamaa. it is R+आ+m+अ , if you hear Srila Prabhupada's tape carefully , you will hear the right pronunciation.if you want to take it like this, you can consider it like this " Raama= र + आ + म + अ = r + aa + m + a

    or

    Rama = रा + म =( र + आ + म + अ ) which is the right pronounciation.

As you said "according to english grammer we add   ( a ) to every sanskrit word that is having ( अ ) added at last" So due to this very reason , it is Rama and not Ram.

because we miss अ in Ram.

my humble apologies for any offenses made. Please forgive me for corrections made. I dnt meet any offenses or wish to hurt in any way. I sincerely ask forgiveness if my words hurt.

It is Rama and not ram. The mahamantra is 32 syllable mantra and if we pronounce it as Ram then we are chanting not the 32 syllables. Also, Krishna is bhavagrahi janardana -- sees our devotion in our chanting and not how good we are pronouncing the names. Some languages do not have the words like Sha and they pronounce Krishna as Kisna. But since they are putting their all effort in remembering Lord while chanting, they are able to make tremendous advancement. It is however important to pronounce properly but thats not the whole and soul of our Japa. Japa is to build a relationship with the holy name.
