The ultimate goal of all ambitions is to become a servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If an intelligent man serves the most dear Lord, who gives Himself to His devotees, how can he desire material happiness, which is available even in hell...
so i guess a seemingly correct version could be " how can he desire material happiness, which is EQUAL to hell...or which is hellish..
the statement quoted erstwhile seems to convey that the jiva could get so called happiness which is available albeit in a negative environment.i mean no offense to anybody but that was what i gleaned with my perception/false perception.

We do not need to interpret Bhagavatam. If there was a hidden meaning, Srila Prabhupada would have explained!
Devotees do not desire any material happiness. Herein, it is said that material happiness is availaible even in hell. If it wasn't true then all those residing in hell would become devotees very soon because of the lack of material happiness, isn't it?
Actually, material nature is so strong that a living entity can be conditioned by any environment. The example of Indra is given in the Bhagavatam wherein he was cursed to become a hog to eat stool and when the time came for him to return to his position, he was reluctant. Similarly, those souls in hellish regions also do not want to leave that place because they are so accustomed to excessive torture or eating stool or whatever the case may be. In conclusion, the material happiness in hellish regions is of the lowest level but it is there.
everything perfect , just another doubtful line "If it wasn't true then all those residing in hell would become devotees very soon because of the lack of material happiness, isn't it?"
IMHO lack of material happiness doesn't trigger devotion rather it triggers more and more desire for finding that elusive happiness.

Correctly pointed out and there is nothing wrong if all the residents of Hell become devotees. Wherever, there is a pure devotee, there is Vaikuntha because he carries the Supreme Personality of Godhead in his heart.

(SB canto 6)
how or rather what kind of material happiness is available in hell? then what is the purpose served by hell if a living entity is enjoying there too?
Hare Krsna Prabhu
Mataji has quoted from Srimad Bhagavatam. Therefore, she is absolutely right. To become a servant of the Lord is the goal of all ambition.
