Pind daan is generally a one-time ritual for ancestors, while shraadha is performed regularly (usually annually) to honor them. Tarpan is often done alongside or as part of shraadha, since it’s the offering of water and prayers for peace of the departed souls. So in many traditions, both shraadha and tarpan continue even after pind daan. It can also vary a bit depending on family customs and regional practices. @Slope 2
The exact practices vary widely by geography, family group etc. Please enquire with elders within your family or brahmanas who know your family practices well. Even amongst brahmanas, there might be some differences.
Based on my knowledge these are principlesfrom shastras like Garuda Purana
1. Pinda Daana & Tarpana - These are almost mandatory at time of death. These offerings help the departed soul in their immediate journey from this realm to next. It facilitates them to get a temporary body and their needs till they get a proper destination & body. This is done for a specific person or persons who have departed within certain number of days after death. If this is not done, their journey to next destination will be extremely painful or they may not even get a proper destination and there is possibility of they becoming preta or ghost like entities.
Pinda contributes to formation of their gross body (sthoola sharira) and satisfies their subsequent hunger. Tarpana (water barley etc) contributes in quenching their thirst, satisfy their subtle body (sookshma sharira).
2. Annual shraadda in Pitr paksha or mahalaya paksha- These are regular offerings which are to satisfy their regular bodily hunger and thirst in their abode. This is equivalent of we human having normal meals on daily basis. This is accepted by ancestors when they have reached their abode in pitr loka. This is done not to a specific departed ancestor, but a general offering to all ancestors. If this is not done they are expected to remain hungry and thirsty till next the offering. The more offerings they receive they more satisfied they are. It is responsibility of each son to make offering. So more sons means more offerings and ancestors are better situated. This also the time when married daughters have previlege to make offering to both departed parents and departed in-laws. In other times married daughters can only make offerings to departed in-laws.
Both the above are almost universal. Then there other practices
1. Some families offer on annual thithi of respective ancestor. Like on the annual death day of grand mother, offerings are made only to her. Those who do this will have to make separate offerings for grand father. They may or may not make separate offerings during pitru paksha.
2. Many people do one time shraddha offering in holy places or rivers like Gaya, Prayag, Ganga, Kaveri etc This again could be to specific or all ancestors. This is done to liberate ancestors if they have are in ghost bodies.
3. Some brahmanas perform offerings every month on thithi to specific ancestor (like navami shukla paksha for grand mother)
You should clarify your doubts with a regular brahmina a priest in the temple about all these rituals.
We are here just devotees practicing devotees not pandits and pujari's to answer these types of questions. Not at all qualified to answer them.
Hope u find a good brahmin and get correct information.
As per my understanding-
Shraddha means just rememberaing the dead ..Shraddha and Pinda daan and tarpana are all done yearly one time or done on a Mahalaya amavasya day.
Shraddha followed by Pnda daan and followed by tarpana ( with water and black seasame seeds) and lastly feeding the brahmins and offering them sambhavana or dakshina.
