This is exactly the kind of thinking that led to abuse of vedas resulting in endless animal slaughter in the name of vedic sacrifice to end which Buddha had to appear and preach non-violence.

Firstly any vedic ritual needs a qualified and expert Brahmana. Good luck finding one in this day and age. This line of thinking is not even close to answering the question. Question is about can it be done as sacrifice to please Lord Vishnu, it  is not asking how to eat meat and not be affected by reactions.

    Hare Krsna

  • Srila prabhupad never said one can eat meat after offering to Goddess Kali. he only said that "vedas" have given this concession. and he also said the meat eater will face the sinful reaction - he will feel the pain he caused to the animals in the future. no offense meant.

If a sports man wants to stick to his prescribed duty as yagna to Maha Vishnu, then will he also offer meat as bhoga to the lord?? has lord said that you can offer anything you like as an offer to me as long as you follow your prescribed duty??

we cannot twist the interpretations of our scriptures to suit our lifestyle or what we LIKE to do.... if one wants to be a sports person let him be the best because the person wants to enjoy the fruits of his actions and accolades and let the person also be responsible for his bondage and subsequent births and deaths.

One has to choose the path which makes or brings one closer to Krsna and the rest have to be rejected even if it means that one need to give up things that one holds dear as one should please the lord than please themselves first..

if I was that sports person and if it meant that I need to eat meat to stay fit and win accolades, then I'd be happy to let it go to please krsna and be His servant.. Like Radha DD said, we need to let go of silly pleasures to receive the higher taste of devotion to Lord Sri Krsna.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

To add to what everyone else has mentioned, Krsna also says in the same Bhagawad Gita - sarva dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja - abandon all varieties of religion and surrender to Me alone....

One has to decide what is more important, body building for a temporary medal or spiritual body building for eternal effects. I am not at all saying that prescribed duties permit eating non veg and other prohibited food. I am simply saying that if there is any confusion, one can give up a lower principle for a higher principle. The lower principle being a top class sportsperson and higher principle being a devotee of the lord.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,

BG states to perform prescribed duties as yajna to Vishnu. For sports man his prescribed duty is to be fit and play well. Is it OK for him to eat meat and gain protein because he wants to be perfect in doing his duty ?

    yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra
    loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ
    tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya
    mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara

Work done as a sacrifice for Visnu has to be performed, otherwise work binds one to this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain unattached and free from bondage. (BG 3.9)

Here Lord Krishna specifically says - perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction

We have to correctly understand the term - "Prescribed duties". Prescribed by whom ?

This is answered by Lord Krishna Himself in the next verse - In the beginning of creation, the Lord of all creatures sent forth generations of men and demigods, along with sacrifices for Visnu, and blessed them by saying, "Be thou happy by this yajna [sacrifice] because its performance will bestow upon you all desirable things. (BG 3.10)

Thus in the beginning of creation itself the prescribed duties were created or given to the living beings by the Lord. Srila Prabhupada in the purport says - Since one has to work even for the simple maintenance of the body, the prescribed duties for a particular social position and quality are so made that that purpose can be fulfilled.(Purport BG 3.9)

Here Srila Prabhupada is referring to Varnashrama system. Thus prescribed duties refer to prescrption as per varnashrama dharma. Varnashrama is a social system principally designed to collectively and cooperatively please lord Vishnu while at the same time allowing fulfillment of material desires in a manner that does not cause bondage or sin to individual.

Modern professions like sportsmen, doctors, engineer etc while may have their respective duties in profession, they cannot be considered as prescribed duties because the activities themselves may or may not please lord Vishnu. Hence a deliberate attempt has to be made by all human beings to please lord Vishnu/ Krishna.

There are professions which directly go against the principles of dharma. For example:

Against Mercy - Animal salughter houses, Brands that sell meat, doctors performing abortion etc

Against Truthfulness - Gambling in horse race, casino, speculative trading in markets,

Against Cleanliness - prostitution, sex trafficking, poronography etc

Against Austerity - Manufacturing & distribution of Intoxicating drugs, liquor, cigarettes, etc

Professions that directly go against dharma or require the individuals to break these principles are best avoided by spiritual aspirants who wish to please the supreme lord.

Having said that it is very difficult to find professions that are completely faultless. Because Krishna Himself says - Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kuntī, even if such work is full of fault.(BG 18.48)

But professions which directly break regulative principles can be avoided. If a person is already involved in such activities before being introduced to krsna consciousness, he may give it up gradually over a period of time if not abruptly.

To conclude - In general sports does not fall into the category of prescribed duty for human beings as per the varnashrama dharma. Nor is it designed or intended to be performed for pleasure of Vishnu. Hence breaking principles of dharma established by the  lord is not OK in performing such an activity.

Note: Sports can be performed for pleasure of Vishnu depending on devotion & intention of performer, but it cannot be generalized as being done for the pleasure of Vishnu.  Example - Gopas would play many games with Krishna every day, Hathi Rama babaji played dice game with Lord Venkateshwara.

From the first statement it appears that Srila Prabhupada allowed/tolerated meat-eating on some conditions. This is not true. Killing of animals, opening slaughterhouses, meat eating including eggs and abortion are all unconditionally prohibited for a person who wishes to make any spiritual advancement or even have peace.

There are four principles of dharma - Truthfulness, Austerity, Mercy and Cleanliness. Animal slaughter or meat eating or abortion is against the principle of Mercy to all living entities. Kali or sin personified resides in these activities. People who indulge in these activities are required to suffer the consequent reactions.

Krishna through material nature gives living entities material body. Nobody has right to take life of another person without suffering consequences or without directed by Lord himself. Earlier in kali yuga, people started misusing scriptures to justify animal killing for sacrifice. Lord Buddha had to appear and start Buddhism to prevent such mal-practices.

    Hare Krsna

  • Prescribed duties followed as per authentic scriptures is ok otherwise its not ok for the lord. I know Sports like cricket demand lot of energy and power and strenuous exercise and you are forced to follow the coaches advice  and most surely recommend  meat fish eggs......well its up to you!!!

    • Sevak

      Hare Krsna

Well everything is ultimately up to the individual.

But the question specifically asks whether while performing one's duty as sacrifice for Visnu is it ok to eat meat.

The answer to this cannot be up to the individual. It is up to Lord Vishnu.

If Lord Vishnu has said it is OK to kill innocent animals, eat their flesh, grow ur body, compete with other people who do same sinful acts then only it can be considered as sacrifice for Vishnu.

If not then this "duty" cannot be performed as sacrifice for Vishnu. It is not the matter of violence, it is matter of purpose that is in accordance with the will of Lord Vishnu.

Arjuna & Bhima killed great many people. But this was the will of the lord hence it is perfect and Krsna accepted it.
