You are wrong.. They tried to go to heaven climbed Meru parvat.. Why?? to go to swarga loka.. in Swashareer ( You understand what is Swashareer)??
They wanted to go to Swarga loka with their body..? is it possible? Nope they all had to die.
But only Yudhisthira could go with Swashareer. to the heaven to see all duryodhana and others enjoying in heaven. He felt sad, he felt he is deceived. Then he was finally tested by Yamadharma raja to see if he can go take this sensibly if he saw his brother in hell .. It was a illusion and test on Yudhishtra. Yudhistra passed it gracefully. He didn't react much show excessive grief for his own blood. He was then told by Yama dharma raja that it was a test and was taken back to Heaven.
Yudhistra had also to visit Hell for his one small lie For just one minute... that he told about Ashwattama ( the elephant) to break Dronacharaya up and this led to the death of the guru drona.

Only way to avoid all bad karmas is chanting,, taking shelter Of KRISHNA
and surrender completely to Lord.

First of all, get ur facts right.
NOne of the pandavas and Kauravas went to hell. All those who died in Kurushetra got veergati.
They all got to heaven only, including Shakuni and Duryodhana also.
Karna knew his mistakes.. what was his curse.. Why things are happening like this..( his kavacha kundalas were taken away etc.)
Did you know Karna was cursed by his own guru...? Parushurama was his guru he cursed Karna that he will forget all that he learnt at the nick of time when it is most needed. Becoz he told lies to his guru ji that he belonged to a Brahamin class to get entry into his ashrama.
He also knew that he did one more bad karma of killing a cow accidentaly in the past life. For which he has to suffer. He was reminded of that too. He Karna in his past life was a demon king , Dambhodbhava He obtained boon from Sun god and got 1000 kavachas... He was called then as Sahasra kavacha. Then he behaved arrogantly at that time Nar- Narayan Rsi had to remove his pride by destroying 999 kavacha.. and was left with one kavacha only. He escaped then. So he had to take birth again as Karna and this time the same Nar- Narayan Rsi became Krishna and Arjuna to Remove his last Kavacha also.
Everything is predestined. As per previous births and curses and karmas only Karna had to die at the hands of Krishna and Arjuna only. Nothing happens without the permission of Supersoul.
Everything happens according to His calculation at a predestine time. And ALL GOD"S DECISIONS ARE FOR LOKA KALYAN ONLY. IT MY BE BAD FROM KARNA'S ANGLE OR DURYODAN'S ANGLE. BUT EVERYTHING HAS A REASON AND GOD KNOWS WHEN TO GIVE THE RESULTS OF UR PAST DEEDS ALL IS PREPLANNED FOR A BIGGER PICTURE. YOU ONLY SEE FROM YOUR END. IT WILL LOOK GOD IS PARTIAL. BUT IT IS ALL FOR A BIGGER CAUSE.

You may call Karma or luck or by the influence of planets all go hand in hand, when Lord wants the person to face his effects of past deeds. ALL function accordingly.
Lord who has power to cause anything.. ( He even caused a temporary Solar eclipse in Mahabharata). Do you remember the scene?
What happened on the 13th day? Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu Desa (Indus Valley King) killed Abimanyu, son of Arjuna on the 13th day of the war. Arjuna was furious and vowed to kill Jayadratha before the sunset next day. The whole Kaurava army gave Jayadratha full protection. When the sun appeared to set, Jayadratha poked his head out to show that he was victorious. Suddenly the sun reappeared in the sky and Arjuna shot Jayadratha down. The story goes that Krishna hid the sun with his Sudarsana chakra. Actually Krishna tricked Jayadratha with the knowledge of the solar eclipse happening on that day.
So, If Lord wants you to suffer now at this time for you past karmas He can change planets, He can change your luck it will turn bonkers.
Even if you prepared well also you will lose that time.

Bad things happen to good people and why the wicked seems always happy?
Well, there is no good and bad things. Happiness and distress come and go in life whether to good or bad person. Nothing is permanent. It is our perception to see things..
Example.1. A woman is in labor.. She is crying, screaming with pain. But her relatives are rejoicing outside the labor room anticipating the cry of the baby..What is good for you may be it is bad for the person suffering.
2. A person prepared very hard for the exam and learnt all questions omitted one chapter in his text book. But unfortunately, all questions in the exam were out of the same chapter.. While the person's best friend studied only that chapter and passed with flying colors. What is good for the other may not be good for you.
3. A rain showered and shattered the plans of your outing with friends but that rain was a blessing to a farmer.
==>Many a time we blame God for all the suffering... But it is actually our own past deeds that show up now. We only see our present life but God sees your all deeds and accumulated karma of all the lives. God as a SuperSoul sitting inside the heart makes a note of all your deeds. He only awards the result of the karma when time comes..( WHATEVER YOU SOW YOU SHALL REAP MAYBE TO INSTANTLY TODAY ITSELF OR MAYBE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME BUT SURELY KARMA UNFOLDS SOME DAY). CHANTING DESTROYS THE SEEDS OF KARMA. THOSE WHICH ARE GERMINATING AND THOSE WHICH ARE READY FOR REAPING HAVE TO BE SUFFERED BUT --ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT CHANTING IS IT GIVES STRENGTH TO FACE THE RESULTS AND ALSO THE SUFFERING IS SIMPLY REDUCED TO A SMALL PAIN. WHERE THE PERSON HAS TO DIE IT MAYBE BE AVERTED TO A SMALL NAIL PRICK THIS IS BECAUSE OF SPECIAL MERCY OF LORD to HIS DEVOTEES.
Once upon a time there a very cruel, thief murderer who accumulated a lot of wealth. When he was getting old he moved from that place to an another place and then something happened he wanted to turn a new leaf.. as he was also getting old.. he stopped all bad activities and became pious and donated all the money to the inmates of that new village. People thought what a dharmatma he is.!!!! But one day.., police came finding him and caught him took him to the jail.. the people there grumbled how can you do this?? he is dharmatma.. Police said about his past life histroy.. Now they understood where from he got all the wealth. Similarly you may be good now in this life.. But previous life you might have done some bad karma for which you will be paying off now. Who knows? ONlY Krishna knows what you did in last birth or 1000 births before also.
Sometimes a good person who is the mode of goodness cries, grumbles, feels sad , tells his near and dear about his problems resorts to praying to Lord. Trusts in God fully and keeps his faith in Lord saying Oh, Lord help me get over this present situation, Help me give me strength!
But if a same problem comes to a person who is in mode of Passion or Ignorance , what is their reaction???? they simply either go fight with it, or kill or commit suicide, or harm other person., do theft or kill someone. Bad person takes actions instantly.
One more story:- one day a very cruel person ( bad person) walking on the road got hurt hit by a stone, and then he discovered under the stone a huge lot of gold hidden. He was happy.. after he left, a good very kind person ( devotee of Lord) was walking along the same route..was again hit by the same stone but he had injured his toe and started to cry in pain, was bleeding.
If you see these both cases any one can say Bad person is favored by Lord and God person is suffering.
But If you see from God's angle . Lord Said..=> The person who was hurt and bleeding though my devotee this life....actually had to die today as per his bad karma in his past life...But becoz he is devoted to ME this life.. I ( GOD) saved him from the big accident and gave a small suffering rather to clear off his old past bad karmic results.
Where as the person who is actually bad this life who is a thief this life was a pious man in his last birth .. and actually he is destined to become a king this birth but as he accumulated bad karma in this life he is destined only to get few gold coins and cannot become a King in this birth.
What do you Infer? Who is bad? who is good now?
One beautiful quote -- Without pain there is no gain. Without struggle there is no strength.
SB 10.14.8 — My dear Lord, one who earnestly waits for You to bestow Your causeless mercy upon him, all the while patiently suffering the reactions of his past misdeeds and offering You respectful obeisances with his heart, words and body, is surely eligible for liberation, for it has become his rightful claim.

Why do bad things mostly happen to good people ?
Because good people are not good enough. Every living being in this material creation is implicated by material desire. Even most pious persons like demigods suffer due to material desires.
Only a pure devotee can be expected to not suffer, but guess what many times pure devotees under go much more challenging circumstances than ordinary good people. But the good thing for pure devotees is that this is their last life and they will gloriously march back home back to godhead after their last life. The only solution is to surrender to Krsna and go back home back to godhead.
