Hare Krishna to all the devotees here. I have been genuinely drawn to Krishna consciousness and have been studying the philosophy seriously. But I have a sincere doubt that I cannot resolve on my own and I am hoping someone here can help me understand.
I am a 19 year old from India trying to understand Ahimsa as deeply and honestly as possible. Not to justify anything — genuinely to understand.
My confusion is this.
ISKCON teaches that we should not eat nonvegetarian food because it causes harm to living beings and goes against the principle of Ahimsa. I understand and respect this deeply.
But I cannot reconcile the following three things and I want to understand them honestly.
First — the dairy question.
Modern commercial dairy in India involves cows being forcibly and repeatedly impregnated through artificial insemination. Their calves are separated from them within hours of birth. The mother cries for days. Male calves are either abandoned on streets or sent for slaughter. The cows themselves are eventually slaughtered when milk production drops. Animal Equality India documented this across hundreds of farms in 2023. Most milk consumed by devotees including products like Amul comes from this system.
How is consuming this dairy consistent with Ahimsa when the suffering involved is arguably greater and more sustained than eating a single local farm egg where no animal dies and no mother is separated from her child?
Second — the pesticide question.
All agricultural production of the vegetarian food we eat involves pesticides that kill millions of insects and soil organisms. The Mahabharata itself acknowledges that plants have life and consciousness. Jain philosophy recognises even microorganisms as living beings with Prana. So the idea of zero harm through vegetarianism seems philosophically impossible. How does ISKCON reconcile this?
Third — the Gita's actual classification.
I read Bhagavad Gita Chapter 17 Verses 8 9 and 10 carefully. Krishna classifies Sattvic food as that which increases life, strength, health, happiness and satisfaction — juicy, nourishing and agreeable. Tamasic food is specifically described as stale, putrid, decomposed and impure.
Fresh properly cooked food does not seem to match the Tamasic description regardless of its source. Where exactly does Krishna explicitly say that food from animal sources is Tamasic or forbidden? I want the specific verse — not the interpretation.
I am not asking this to argue. I genuinely want to understand where the scriptural basis ends and where institutional tradition begins. Because if I am going to follow a principle I want to follow it honestly and completely — not selectively.
Thank you for any guidance. Hare Krishna

Hare Krishna,
First — the dairy question.
Answer:- Avoid using the milk products produced by such modern techniques. Better to collect milk from local gaushalas especially which are associated with temple. In that way you can visit temple and also buy milk from these places give some donation for goshala as well.
ISKCON has it own Gaushala. They don't use Amul products.

If devotees are using maybe out of ignorance. You should spread the awareness.
"How is consuming this dairy consistent with Ahimsa when the suffering involved is arguably greater and more sustained than eating a single local farm egg where no animal dies and no mother is separated from her child?"
In olden days these modern techniques for producing more milk was not there. Every house had a backyard and Everyone had a minimum of one cow. When the cow was pregnant and was yeilding milk . After the calves had their share whaterver left out in the udder was collected for home use purpose and for making as offering to Krishna then only used for daily consumption by the family.
Now we all live in apartment sized homes no backyards. We don't have cows or cow sheds. We are buying milk in cartonheses.
In USA we have even ghor Kaliyuga prabhaav. Here Cows are fed with Leftovers and meat. Cows chomp here on meat nicely and they give hormones so that the yeild is more.
I choose to buy Cow's fed with green grass little expensive but What can be done?
I one day plan to become a VEGAN. GHOR KALIYUG!!! For me, I can survive without milk. I hate milk and milk products not a great fan of milk. Well. .. Veganism is the way to live in Kaliyuga.
If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it. ( BG 9.26) My Krishna can survive with Leaf, flower, fruit and water also too. ALL HE EVER WANTED IS DEVOTION AND LOVE. WE both going to quit milk :-) ( I mean me and my deity in my home. )
" eating a single local farm egg where no animal dies and no mother is separated from her child?"
How come? Egg has potential life in it. If all conditions are kept natural a egg can fertilize and produce a baby.
You are going to kill the life. OK people will start saying now .. Oh ! unfertilized eggs are vegetarian eggs. Yakk. Egg is a menstrual byproduct coming. I would never like to have someone's menstrual products. Will you? eww.
"Second — the pesticide question."
Answer: Every breath you and me are taking is killing zillions of microbes. So, Shall we stop breathing itself?
"Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kuntī, even if such work is full of fault. (18.48 BG)"
Krishna never said AHIMSA. If HE SAID - He would never let Arjuna to kill so many people in Mahabharata yudha.
As every endeavor is covered with fault oh Arjuna as one cannot stop working itself. We must offer all the fruits of all karma first to Krishna.
In olden days the use of Pesticides was limited. Now a days we are using it more often then required. So, some regulated use of pesticides should be done by the Government.
Plus. When we offer anything to Krishna as Bhoga. This turns into Prasadam.
That is why While Cutting fruits and vegetables also ( as fruits and vegetables also have life in them) we should keep chanting and offering it to Lord first.
HE IS BHOKTA.
EVERYTHING IS COMING OUT OF LORD AND ENTERING LORD.
You must offer to Lord to say sorry to Lord for hurting so many beings for the sake of your use. And Plead to Lord to make it as a Prasadam for our consumption.
Without offering to Lord if you consume anything then you are doing sins.
Keep chanting while cutting fruits and vegetables, cooking, cleaning floors. So that unkowing if you are killing insects while sweeping floors or cleaning utensils or while cooking dishes or cutting vegetables... etc you are all covered as You are offered to KRISHNA mentally.
DEVOTEES DON'T FEAR OF GETTING ANY SINFUL KARMA BECAUSE THEY HAVE PERFECT FAITH IN KRISHNA. THEY KNOW WHATEVER WILL HAPPEN. KRISHNA IS THERE TO PROTECT ME.
I KNOW LORD THERE IS SO MANY MISTAKES IN ME. I DO ZILLIONS OF MISTAKES EVERY SECOND BUT I HAVE FIRM FAITH THAT YOU WILL SET ALL THINGS RIGHT AND TURN EVEN POISON INTO PRASADAM.
"Third — the Gita's actual classification."
Bg. 16.1-3 mentions NON- Violence.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; renunciation; tranquillity; aversion to faultfinding; compassion for all living entities; freedom from covetousness; gentleness; modesty; steady determination; vigor; forgiveness; fortitude; cleanliness; and freedom from envy and from the passion for honor – these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.
Bg. 13.8-12 also mentions about Non violence
Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity; approaching a bona fide spiritual master; cleanliness; steadiness; self-control; renunciation of the objects of sense gratification; absence of false ego; the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease; detachment; freedom from entanglement with children, wife, home and the rest; even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; constant and unalloyed devotion to Me; aspiring to live in a solitary place; detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realization; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth – all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance.
Krishna accepts plant-based offerings (9.26)
If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it. ( BG 9.26)
He didn't even ask any milk products also. Only He asked is Love.
question:" Fresh properly cooked food does not seem to match the Tamasic description regardless of its source."
Meat takes longer time to cook.
You know vegetarian foods like veggies cook faster max. take 3-5 min to get boiled most of the veggies. The digestion is also faster.
But the Non VEG cooks slow. To cook meat adding spices, masalas etc. takes 2-3 hours cooking time. So also the digestion takes slowly.
for digesting animal protien you need atleast 6-8hours. Plants can be digested easily takes like 2 hours max. 3 hours.
In the intestines itself the food become stale, putrid and decomposed as so much time has elapsed after you last meal. There is gas formation because to make the meat palatable you put lots of spices, garlic and onion. This all irritate the intestines and cause all digestive problems.
Once the digestion is effected .. mental clarity is lost as you are more focussed on your gut then other higher purposes of life.. like Chanting and devotional activities are distrubed because of improper evacuation of the bowel and constipation. No fiber in the diet leads to constipation aswell.
So, We should avoid Spicy foods as they invoke Rajasik qualities in us.
We should avoid stale food ( it doesn't mean the way of freshly cooking ) it means the food that is staying in the digestive tract for long hours becomes stale inside as UNTIL IT IS DIGESTED PROPERLY your brain and other important organs don't get any nutrients.
If you know the process of digestion..
AFTER DIGESTION THERE IS NEXT STEP THAT IS ABSORPTION OF NUTRIENTS INTO THE BLOOD .. THEN ASSIMILATION is the utilization of NUTRIENTS BY Organs.
IT IS ALL DELAYED
DELAY IN ANY PROCESS MEANS LAZINESS
LAZINESS IS TAMASIC QUALITY.
Hare Krishna
cool. i like your answers.. before i say anything i just want to tell you that im young and exploring different perceptions. i do not blindly follow anything doesnt matter if its religion or not so my arguments might be stupid or maybe not?? its all based on personal opinions..

i agree and i know everything you said exists but the thing is you said everything but intentions.. i dont know but i have seen this in many forums and questions.. people say texts says this and that and you should follow this and that.. but do they actually tell you that you have to become a good human? do they tell you that at the end of the day behind all actions your intentions matter? most of the teachings are for inner self but when doing any external work they do not tell that intentions matter and rather put a fear based idea that this is sin and blah blah blah..
your idea that eggs is menstrual and its bad and eww and then later you agreed to the point that WE kill zillions of microbes.. doesnt they have life aswell?? so youre saying that microbes doesnt matter and eggs does? i mean we breath to survive so do we eat eggs not for fun to gain strenght.. now your idea for eggs is justified based on one single perspective which is eating for fun and not with purpose and reason..
then coming to the point where you are literally explaining all of that causes and all on why NOT to eat nonveg not because its sin but because it takes longer to digest? i am glad that for the first time someone didnt sounded like its a holy grail sin for eatin nonveg LOL but doesnt that text mean as SIMPLE as leaf water flower or fruit... he doesnt says that YOU WILL HAVE TO OFFER ME THESE ONLY.. and maybe somewhere you agreed to it and im the one being stupid here to NOt understand your idea.. i dont know maybe im being egoistic about myself that im right and you are wrong? i acknowledge your idea but are you seeing it from every perspective or from only one?
i dont know but personally i believe that most of the times people do not question teachings and their WHYs they just blindly believe it because its written by a human ?? i mean i dont know but i havent reached that level of spirtuality where im super super awared of my existence and nonchalant.. i just dont understand the idea of praying to god.. not like i am against it but why does he wants us to PRAY to him? so far my AI has told me that we pray to him to adapt to his qualities.. he is supreme and he doesnt wants our prayers for him to get satisfied or whatsoever.. i dont know really and i am trying to explore things.. lol maybe theres a lot of things i mightve said and i am just being stupid..
i lowkey found you interesting and would love to hear your next answer.. :)
Too much blah blah blah.. cut it out.
I feel I am a sinful person. I kill too many insects breathing. I cannot even cover my nose and stop breathing itself. LOL
I will try to minimize doing more sinful karma at least by STOPPING myself from consuming non vegetarian food.
I came to know now a days milk is also not realiable. They are causing pain to the cow.
Cows are artificially inseminated and made to become pregnant to produce milk in larger quantities and milk production is increased by giving hormonal injections as well.
This is making me to shun milk and milk products too.
I don't know in this way. What is there for me to eat and thrive
Oh Krishna, Even if I try to stop milk...My bones are weak and I am losing calcium so, I will have to use milk ( organic milk ) is fine to some extent.
Literally if I want to practice total AHIMSA .. then I have to stop breathig as well.
I don't know what to do Krishna my Lord. Please help me.
I am thriving on minimum food. Just enough for survival. .. I don't need to build muscles as I am a woman. I am not going for waging wars like I am not Kshetriya.
I am Vaishnavaite devotee all I need is a little bit energy to sustain and survive so that I finish my pending karma from finish off my life on this planet.
My main aim is to reach Krishna. For maintaining good health.. I am trying to Buy expensive Organic vegetables and Organic milk ( which is X3 times more expensive ). Thank you Krishna for giving me enough money to buy good products..so that I can stay just enough healthy to maintain my life on this planet and do my daily duties as well as just enough energy to do devotional activities as well.
I am not on this planet to go and fight on the borders. I am not aiming to have a gym body. I just am satisfied with little bit good health. Thank you.
Rest of the things I am hoping Krishna will surely take care. Krishna is there to help me.
I surrendered to Krishna and Surely He will do something for me.
Hare Krishna
". i just dont understand the idea of praying to god.. not like i am against it but why does he wants us to PRAY to him?"
Well, He doesn't want anyone to pray to Him.
If you have the sense of gratitute to give thanks to Krishna you will show respect by loving HIM. Praying is like loving Krishna.
You are not being thankful to HIm for anything then.. you are very selfish. How can you even pray or love HIM?
🕉️Namah Shivaya!
Sir if we go as per the points mentioned by you then there is nothing we can eat. Just starve to death!
See I am also an partial nonveg and i know that it is difficult to leave nonveg if it has been the regular cusine in your family but that doesn't mean that we should give these kind of excuses to justify meat eating. Consuming chicken fish goat pork beef etc is intentional whereas what you have mentioned is forced upon us or unknown to some. Hope Krishna spares them of sins
Krishna has not explicitly mentioned many things like lying and stealing is not a sin but it is mentioned somewhere else like the Vedas. Similarly animal food being tamasic must have been explicitly mentioned in some other scriptures
no, in my case my parents eat sattvic food but that hasnt helped me a lot really. the reason being sattvic food they make at home has made me skinny fat and weak physicaly and as a man i believe i should be strong physically and mentally to protect me and my family. i want to consume nonveg with the reason that i have a goal to achieve and im still 19 and i have a life ahead of me.. isnt it like its specifically mentioned that intentions matter? because with that logic isnt it like we eat veg foods by killing insects who have souls or living beings.. why consuming meat is bad and killing insects not? isnt it then being biased about one thing? the entire question i have is whether people from iskcon are awared of other things or just blindly follow anything. i am not against any teachings but i like questioning them and their thoughts.
I hope my words do not sound rude.. i just wanted to have a normal conversation
your case is similar to mine. Perhaps it is the previous janma karmas. I am from Goa and since childhood eggs, fish chicken has been a routine part of my diet but I was always low in energy no strength getting tired quickly. I switched over to veg but no improvement. The only improvement was no constipation. Sachin Tendulkar is a pure veg. So veg nonveg doesn't make any difference.
If you could tell what your goal is then devotees here can help you.
Bro insects destroy crops cause losses to farmers hence they must be killed. Tomorrow you will even object to the killing of terrorists on the principle of ahimsa. Gandhi has cheated us by not giving the complete sloka
