Thats true. If one is logical and open minded it makes sense to discuss.

        Here it is like

        We say Guru is required.

        Someone says Bhagavatam is important.

We say Thats great but that doesn't say if Guru is required or not

        Someone says Bhagavatam is good

We say Bhagavatam is great but it must be heard from guru

        Someone says Bhagavatam is ecstatic

We say - This is a thread about importance of guru. If you are not acknowledging importance of guru, then you are saying guru is not important. Lets talk when you gather the guts to say it explicitly.

  • What you said is true, but it does not mean that any person who just picks up Bhagavatam and reads it once has reached the transcendental world. In order to understand the true devotional spirit of the book Bhagavatam, we need to take shelter of the person Bhagavatam (a pure devotee). It is impossible otherwise to even obtain liberation from material bondage what to speak of entering the transcendental world.

What you have said is exactly true. In these forums there are many types of people. Not all of them have same conclusion as vaishnav acaryas like Srila prabhupad. No need to listen to them. Srila prabhupad clearly in his books states one needs to take shelter of devotee of Krsna and understand truth from them by rendering service

There are many people who call themselves, prabhupadanugas, ritviks etc etc. They profess that no need of spiritual master, just chant and read etc. Prabhupad is only guru etc. All these people are simply themselves misled and trying hard to mislead others. A serious practitioner must avoid such pretenders and take shelter of genuine preachers of KC who are servants of Srila Prabhupad and parampara.

How to gain affinity for hearing Srimad Bhagavatam ?

    SB . 1.2.16

    shushrushoh shraddadhaanasya
    vaasudeva-kathaa-rucih
    syaan mahat-sevayaa vipraah
    punya-tirtha-nishevanaat

Translation : O twice-born sages, by serving those devotees who are completely freed from all vice, great service is done. By such service, one gains affinity for hearing the messages of Väsudeva.

Purport :  "The Lord is more pleased when He sees that His servants are properly respected because such servants risk everything for the service of the Lord and so are very dear to the Lord. The Lord declares in the Bhagavad-gétä (18.69) that no one is dearer to Him than one who risks everything to preach His glory."

There is lord in the heart, the lord is in every atom and in between atoms in the material and cosmic manifestations. The lord is there as holy name, form, quality, pastimes, deity, dham, srimad bhagavatam, taste of water and what not. The whole cosmos is but energy of the lord.

But due to conditioning we living entities are unable to perceive the lord anywhere. It is of limited use to give hundreds of quotes saying god is here nd there when one cannot perceive. All it takes is a few clicks of copy and paste and few seconds.

The real way to get access to the lord through all the above channels is by humbly serving the servant of Krsna who is preaching and propagating the glories of Krsna.

One could keep mechanically chanting, reading, worshiping, quoting for eternity. Simply by humble service to servant of lord Krsna is immediately pleased like nothing else. Lord is conquered by those who serve his devotees.

South Indian Brahmana who read BG without proper pronunciation was delivered love of god by Lord Chaitanya, because he was sincerely obeying the instructions of his spiritual master day after day without expecting anything in return simply as a service, just to please his spiritual master.

Hare Krsna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga! All glories to Prabhupad!

Gu means darkness and ru means brightness or knowledge. The person who helps us to overcome the ignorance of darkness and bring us to the light of knowledge, he is called guru. It is said in Padma purana, that the guru by his power and devotion is capable of rendering a person absolute knowledge and purify him.
And lord Sri Krsna instructs in Bhagawad Gita, if you want to come to Me, if you want to know about Me, first of all go to a bonafide Guru. And if you don't approach a spiritual master and try to learn scriptures like Gita own your own then all your  efforts will prove to be futile.

HG Sriman Sankarshan Das Maharaj explains that "in Krishna consciousness we have a tripod, the three basic legs of bhakti that will solidly situate you on the spiritual platform. They are described as follow by Srila Prabhupada in Chapter Six of the Nectar of Devotion:
    (1) Accepting the shelter of the lotus feet of a bona fide spiritual master.
    (2) Becoming initiated by the spiritual master and learning how to discharge devotional service from him.
    (3) Obeying the orders of the spiritual master with faith and devotion.
All the other items of bhakti are automatically included in these three principles. So if you will simply take shelter of the spiritual master, get initiated by him and always obey him, you will quickly and easily be elevated to the transcendental platform of pure devotional service. In other words, Lord Sri Krishna will become your property"
So in simple words we cannot be liberated from material bandage without the mercy of our spiritual master.
Even if you cannot undergo a formal ceremony, if the spiritual master accepts you and you follow his instructions, that’s initiation. Srila Prahbupada did not get formally initiated until after twelve years after accepting his spiritual master, yet he says from the first meeting, the actual initiation took place, as he accepted his spiritual master within his heart and his instructions as his life and soul.

I however have no knowledge. I just made an insignificant attempt to answer and shared what I have learnt from senior devotees. Forgive for any offense.

  • SB 12.3.32 — Cities will be dominated by thieves, the Vedas will be contaminated by speculative interpretations of atheists, political leaders will virtually consume the citizens, and the so-called priests and intellectuals will be devotees of their bellies and genitals.
SB 12.3.33 — The brahmacārīs will fail to execute their vows and become generally unclean, the householders will become beggars, the vānaprasthas will live in the villages, and the sannyāsīs will become greedy for wealth.
SB 12.3.38 — Uncultured men will accept charity on behalf of the Lord and will earn their livelihood by making a show of austerity and wearing a mendicant’s dress. Those who know nothing about religion will mount a high seat and presume to speak on religious principles.

SB 12.3.46 — If a person hears about, glorifies, meditates upon, worships or simply offers great respect to the Supreme Lord, who is situated within the heart, the Lord will remove from his mind the contamination accumulated during many thousands of lifetimes.

  • Guru is the conduit who connects the finite to the infinite. A guru may appear to be a physical person but actually he is the direct representative of the Guru Tattva or the principle that is universal which guides the seeker to the final destination of the living entity.

  • Yes sadhus do not suffer material miseries, but we should not take only the external aspect of it into consideration. To the outer vision they may look sick but internally they are not subject to any suffering, because of their position of being a devotee.

Even during the time of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Srila Sanatana Gosvami got boils all over his body but nevertheless he remained an exalted sadhu.

Therefore kindly discard this line of argument for gauging a devotee's purity by externally evaluating his sufferings, we have no clue what is going on inside.

So even if we see some senior ISKCON devotees suffering they are still completely eligible to give us spiritual guidance and diksha. We cannot say since he has got so and so disease externally he is not a sadhu.

  • Yes a devotees 'suffering' is apparent. As long as we have the material body sufferings keep coming. Simply by seeing someone undergo material tribulations we cannot discard them as not being a sadhu. Because even though to the mundane eye it looks like suffering the devotees are not truly affected by them. For instance Srila Prabhupada suffered two heart attacks on board Jaladuta when he was travelling to US for the first time. But if it were not for him you and I wouldn't be quoting from the Bhagavatam in previous answers.

So it is wrong to conclude that only a person who maintains high health standards are real sadhus and others bogus. Thus is why we need to gurus so that we may not make wrongful conclusions simply by reading sastra.

  • The discussion was about the necessity of accepting a guru, where did illness and disease of sadhus come into the picture, kindly clarify why you posted the previous verses.
