  • Hare Krishna,

I suddenly got a flashing thought in my mind about a extract from Narsi Mehta ji's life. I don't know why it is striking in my head to say this stroy. What could be the link???

I am surprised as soon as I read this question. I am kinda propelled to say this katha. Let us see if there is an relavance to theme " Krishna is fully present in His Name. .. how to realize that Krishna and HIS Name are non different"

Narsi Mehta ji's life Sri Krishna plays a great role and Sri Krishna directed came to help Narsi mehta ji and It is a know fact. This story is told in Bhaktmal stories. Which is a book that has many devotees stories.. who in recent times had got direct darshan and help from Krishna..

One time It so happened that some sadhu ( saints ) came to the place Junagadh after completing their piligrimage and they came over to the place and asked for a Mahajan ( a vyaapari) business man who can write them a promisory note. ( Hundi). That in today's language I can say as a demand draft. They said they are going on a long piligrimage and it is not advisable to carry money with them so they want a cheque for certain amount of money deposited so that they can collect the money at a different place when they want to cash it.

So, some rascals who hated Narsi mehta wanted to trick Nasi Mehta and said .. "Yes yes.. we have only one Mahajan in  our village that is Narsi Mehta ji .. he alone is capable for writing a promisory note. So you better go to him" they said.

So, they all ( piligrims) came over to Narsi Mehta's house. Narsi ji as soon as he saw the saints he did dandavat pranam and was very much pleased to get a darshan of saints gave them water and asked them about their whereabouts served them refreshments etc. and asked them Pls. tell what can I do for you all?

so the saints said --" hey Narsi pls. take this 700 rupees which we have and write a note and give us so that we can cash it when we go back to Dwarika. As we are strangers to this new place and we are scared of getting looted by the thieves on our way to Dwarika. So please help us by writing a Demand draft ( HUNDI).

Narsi ji soon understood that it was a trickery done by those haters of his and thought in his mind.. even though it is a trick but all is happening as per Leela of Nath ji ( Shreenath ji) so let me go with the flow as per Lord's plan. If Lord is the doer then why do I need to worry. So, Narsi ji who has full faith on Krishna did take the 700 rupees and wrote a promisory note and Narsi ji tells the Piligrims that when they get to Dwarika.. There is another Mahajan there bade  mahajan ji by name Shamal Shah ji Seth ji who is very humble and generous. If you show him this Hundi ( promisory note) surely Shamal Shah Seth ji will give you the money I owe you. Narsi Mehta ji was a Krishna devotee and he was a very simple hearted innocent devotee and he thought all is happening as per the leela of krishna so Krishna will take care and he didn't get any name at that time he said simply take this note to Shyamal Seth ji.  He didn't write the address where to go which street which location.. Nothing he has mentioned. Just said go and give him he will give you back the money you gave me.

Now the Piligrims thoughts maybe his friend is a big Seth ji in dwarika and is well known so let us ask the local people there and get the money. So these saints were also very innocent. They didn't even had any doubt about Narsi Mehta ji. Because Narsi Mehta ji is Vaishnav and the way he respected the sadhu Sant itself showed that he is trust worthy so they left for Dwarika that day.

Next day upon reaching Dwaraka. They started to inquire about Shamal das Seth ji. But no one knew him. All said there is no business man here with this name. They felt they were duped. They started to think how can a param bhakt vaishnav who says he is Krishna devotee can fool us like this??

Here in Narsi Mehta ji was using that 700 rupees deposited by the saints for doing Bhandara ( feeding poor and sick ) calling them to take Prasadam of Lord. He used all the money for making food and offering bhoga to Lord and distributing the food among poor people saying  "aao mere Shyamal Shah ka prasadi paao" At the end of the bhandara (food distribution) an old brahmin came and sat said.. Bade door se aaya hoon laao mujhe bhi prasaadi do Narsi.. ab Narsi ji ke pass poore bartan khaali hogaye the. . All the food almost was over. Narsi's wife had kept some aata ( flour ready ) for making roti's for her and husband. Narsi ji asked her to prepare quickly the 4 roti's for the olf man and offered the old man the roti's * the portion he and his wife kept to eat.

As soon as the happened here the old man felt satisfied there in Dwarika.. Lord Dwarikadeesh Himself took the form of a merchant by name Shyamal shah seth ji and went to the piligrims and gave the money said-- " who amongst you has the Narsi mehta's note can take the money which Narsi Mehta owe's you. Here is the money.

The piligrims said .. oh you are Shyamal das seth.. we have searched for you all over the place and you w ere not to be seen anywhere. Everybody said that there is no Shyamal das seth ji at all. How come we cannot find you? Lord replied .. humbly said-- sorry Sadhu maharaj ji I am sorry for being late but I cannot be found like this by searching in the streets but I can be found by searching within in silence.  The purport of what Lord said only few who delve deep only can understand. Lord's words are not fathomable and easier understood by all.

Lord said.. look take this money and give me the note which Narsi ji gave you.  I have other works to attend. So take this money .. and said-- you can trust Narsi Mehta ji and take his Hundi and come to me to collect money. I have no dreath of money so I can give you money whenever and all you need to show me is Narsi Mehta's Hundi ( promisory note). Lord even writes a letter to Narsi Mehta ji saying You can send all those whom you write a promisory note to me. I have no scarcity of money. I can repay them whenever you send them to me. Now taking this message and hand written note from Lord. The saints came back to Narsi Mehta ji and gave him the note by Shyamal das seth ji. As soon as Narsi ji opened the letter. Narsi ji started to dance in happiness and with tears rolling in his eyes said Oh Lord you have saved me again from dishonor, and danced incessantly...I just flukely wrote this letter in your name. I knew it is your leela and you would somehow save me.. I wanted to offer YOU Bhog ..I had no money. I had nothing in my home. You sent money made me prepare food offer you bhoga and then You Yourself came to me as an old man and partook the food which was kept for me and my wife and there you have gone with the name which I have mentioned to repay my Hundi. Oh Lord you saved me from dishornor and also made my wish to fulfill  ( to do bhandara in your name).

Naami aur Naam mein koi bedh nahi hota .. The Named and the name are non different. I felt this story is apt and relavant somehow.
I don't know how but this came into my head.

The person Narsi Mehta ji simple hearted person just believed that it is Lord who is the doer will provide everything and he needn't worry so simple minded devotee just used the name of Lord and wrote Shyamal seth ji will give you in Dwarika the money I owe you. And Lo!! Lord appeared as Shyamal das seth ji.

Now, this leela shows that if we have such simple minded devotees trust in the name of Lord .. " In the name of Lord" Lord can appear for us too.

How to develop faith is by reading such simple devotees who achieved Krishna's favors and Krishna's direct darshan can only be our guide.

Krishna is not easy to be achieved yet very easily reachable. All we need is to be humble and maintain the innocence of a child at our heart.
To achieve that you need to surrender to a pure hearted simple devotee.

    Hare Krishna.

    • This story beautifully emphasizes the power of the Lord's Name and how Krishna, even when not physically present, is always with us through His Name. The idea that the Name itself holds all the power and presence of the Divine is such a comforting thought.

I’m grateful you shared this, as it feels like a deep reminder to approach life with simplicity, humility, and trust—just like Narsi Mehta ji did. It's a profound reflection on how Krishna manifests in our lives when we call upon Him with a sincere heart. Hari Hari!

  • Hare Krishna

" Faith means unflinching trust in something sublime " according to Bhaktivedanta Purports.

As you go on reading the pastimes of the Lord from Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam and go on chanting the Holy name. This faith will continue to develop until you realize that there is no difference between the name, form, fame, pastimes and paraphernalia of the Lord. They are all absolute.

A person on this platform of realization is always jubilant.  Brahma-bhutah prasanatma na socati na kaanksati..

He never laments or desires to have anything.  In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Lord Sri Krsna.

As explained in the next verse: Bhagavad-gita 18.55

    bhaktya maam abhijaanaati

    yaavaan yas caasmi tattvatah

One can understand Me as I am, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead,  only by devotional service.

So, my reply to your question is to engage more and more in devotional service and  reduce time wastage on unnecessary Kintu-Parantu.

    Hari Bol

    • Describe exactly what you mean by this "So, my reply to your question is to engage more and more in devotional service and reduce time wastage on unnecessary Kintu-Parantu."?

      • Kintu-parantu is hindi terminology for dry arguments.  I wrote you a reply filled with quotes from Bhagavad-gita but you mentioned only that: Describe Kintu-parantu and that too,  not, kindly describe or please describe.  I am a 44 year old man and I think you are much younger! Age gap can be respected. Even if not then that is no way to seek an explanation. Learn to request properly! Submissively!
