I had a curiosity to read translation of a bhagavad-gita verse given by Vivekananda() and i saw that many of the things that he is writing in his commentary is not correct. He even removes the word devotion(eka bhaktir visisyate) from his translation.

How can i reconcile this? He is quite a famous person, how he can write like this.

i was reading the verse 7.17 and 18, there a word jnani was used and according to srila prabhupada, there it meant that it means one who is in the full knowledge of krishna and performs pure devotional service but from the translation is vivekananda it seems like it means one who is a jnanyogi. He also wrote Jnani and Bhakti is one.

Few more things that i found incorrect in Swami Vivekanandas translation,

1. "It is declared here that the Jnani is verily God himself"

2. "The others are dualistic in their attitude. They think of themselves as separate from the Lord and worship Him as a superior Being."

3. He has his being in the Lord. That is why the Jnani is worshipped as the Lord Himself. Vyasa is described as Vishnu Himself with two arms.

I'm finding a lot of things incorrect in Swami Vivekananda's translation

If that is the case, then no need to read that book.

And please note - Do not provide links to such incorrect translations in these forums

Please help me to reconcile this

Right and Wrong CANNOT be reconciled. If somone thinks they have reconciled, then it is possibly an illusion.

What is possible is - to identify what is Right and what is Wrong. That is called discrimination.

  • Hare Krishna,

I am in agreement with Radha Rasamayi DD Mata ji.  One cannot travel in two boats at a time. If we try to travel in two boats ( how is it possible also?)

One foolish person tried to put one leg in one boat and another leg in another boat and sailed he fell down into the ocean ( in other words if you are studying from both the literatures you will fall down at some point into the ocean of nescience ( ghor andhkaar maya).

Don't do this atrocity to your self.

Vievekanand is famous person no doubt plus he is having deep knowledge of philosophy , no doubts about this. But the problem is he is on gyan maargah. Gyani's are nice only to certain point after that too much gyan without surrender will lead to pride... and fall down.

A jyani studies philosophy by dicing and subdicing everything by using their sharp intellect.

JYAN marg emphsizes on " WHAT IS REAL WHAT IS UNREAL"

That is true ..What is CHANGABLE IN THIS WORLD WHATEVER IS NASHWAR IS ALL UNREAL

AND WHATEVER IS UNCHANGEABLE IS ONLY REAL.

    once you do this division.

You come to point that all whatever you are seeing thru your eyes is all UNREAL WORLD As all is going to change one day or all will perish

WHAT IS UNCHANGEABLE IS ONLY ATMAN  * YAHAN TAK BHI SAHI HAI

But AFTER THIS POINT THEY HAVE NO CLUE.

ATMAN IS SELF AND one who came to know the ATMAN ( is imperishable and REAL ) is a self realized person. .. LIKE OUR VIVEKANANDA.

BUT ATMAN IS ONLY TINY SPARK or MARGINAL POTENCY OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD.. ( THIS CONCEPT IS NOT KNOW BY VIVEKANANDA OR HIS FOLLWERS).

We know who is Supereme personality of Godhead.

THE BOOK WHICH IS TRANSLATED BY MR. Vivekananda ji is told actually BY SRI KRISHNA.

SRI KRISHNA SHOWS ARJUNA THE WHOLE VISHWA ROOPA ...HE also shows that He is occupying whole brahmanda and also he is present in each and every organism ( PLANTS, ANIMALS, STONES, TREES) as PARMATMA. IF PARMATMA IS PRESENT IN ALL CREATURES AS WELL AS EVEN STONE>.. ARE THEY JADH OR CHETAN?

UNDERSTAND WHAT VIVEKANANDA SAYS>. everything is unreal except.. ATMAN

BUT THEY dON T EVEN KNOW THE Concept of parmatma... WHICH IS FOOLISHNESS.

HOW CAN GYANI BECOME EQUAL TO PARMATMA OR EVEN LORD?

One ten-thousandth part of the tip of the hair is the dimension of the spirit soul. On the basis of that spirit soul, this body develops. ( AS PER BG )

How can a tiny soul as small as a hair tip ( 1/10,000) part of the hair tip that too.. be occupying whole brahmanda?

JUST UNDERSTAND ARJUNA became self realized soul after Krishna taught BG to him.

What did Arjuna do? Arjuna simply surrendered to Krishna.

Vivekananda ji also became self realized understood the concept of Atman which is real but lost it when he didn't know whom to surrender to.

ofcourse Atma is nashwar and imperishable but this atma has a swamy .. Atma is a part of Parmatma.. and atma is a marginal potency of the SUPERSOUL... is not conceived by him.

TOTALLY FORGOT THAT KRISHNA IS THE ONE WHO SHOWED ARJUNA THE VISHWA ROOPA?

Totally forgot about the parmatma? How can that be?

BG is only half learnt that means.

THAT IS WHY HALF KNOWLEDGE IS DANGEROUS.

    Hare Krsna prabhu,

    PAMHO.

Why are you trying to reconcile two translations of Gita?

If you read the preface of Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad Gita As It Is, his diivne grace clearly mentions that at the time, there was no proper translation of Gita in english. Thats why he wrote his translation and purports and called it As It Is - meaning without additions or deletions. Like they say, proof of the pudding is in the eating - Srila Prabhupada's Gita has been transalation in more than 100 languages across the world. Also, his Gita has transformed innumerable lives across the globe. Atleast we are born in India and have some background, have heard the names Rama, Krsna - know Them to be God. In western world, they have never heard these names or these concepts. Still they are able to read and understand and accept.

It is very difficult to accept another person's culture and way of living. Whereas these foreigners have become more Indian and have adopted sanatan dharma to such an extent, it even impresses Indians.

Like I said, proof of the pudding is in the eating.

I have not read Vivekanand's Gita, so cannot comment. Reading Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad Gita As It Is is enough for me.

You have to choose one path and start walking on that path. IF you keep on trying out new paths, you will never reach your goal.

    Choice is yours.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,

    Radha Rasamayi DD
