How to control anger?

Tell me how to manage anger?  How to live life with people whom we don't like to face everyday but unfortunately have to face them.  What are different ways to get over this anger. Krishna says to see Him in all beings. Why cannot we see? Why find some people most irritable difficult to cope with.

I appreciate your replies.  PAMHO  AGTSP. Haribol!!!

It is best to refrain quoting teachings from other religions unless it is re-quoting by Srila Prabhupada or other previous acarya. Because there are limitations/inaccuracies in teachings of other religions. When we accept teachings from other religions then we are likely to accept the limitations/inaccuracies as well.

Buddhism, on the other hand, says that anger is always bad.

The beauty of vedic teachings is that rarely any aspect is painted as 100% good or 100% bad. Srila Prabhupada elaborately describes about controlling anger in Nectar of Instruction verse 1

Similarly, anger can be controlled. We cannot stop anger altogether, but if we simply become angry with those who blaspheme the Lord or the devotees of the Lord, we control our anger in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Krodha, anger, cannot be stopped, but it can be applied rightly. It was in anger that Hanumān set fire to Laṅkā, but he is worshiped as the greatest devotee of Lord Rāmacandra. This means that he utilized his anger in the right way. Arjuna serves as another example. He was not willing to fight, but Kṛṣṇa incited his anger: “You must fight!” To fight without anger is not possible. Anger is controlled, however, when utilized in the service of the Lord.

Thus seen above Srila Prabhupada explains the best way to control and channelize anger for the development of Krsna consciousness.

I understand that the above example is out of context in answering the particular question. But the point is bringing teachings from other religions, non-devotional literature must be used sparingly because they may or may not be 100% accurate. Srimad Bhagavatam is 100% pure devotional scripture. BG is 100% pure because Lord Himself presented it.

It is not my intention to find fault with any person or religion or diminish the contribution of the devotees/ participants. It is only a slight apprehension about the accuracy of the good contributions made. Please forgive me if I have caused disappointment to anyone by this

Krsna is not exactly present in every living entity.

The above statement is incorrect. Sri Krsna is personally present in every living being as Paramatma. This does not mean every living being is god or can become god. Srimad Bhagavatam says this

      Vadanti tat tattva-vidas
       tattvaṁ yaj jñānam advayam
      brahmeti paramātmeti
       bhagavān iti śabdyate

Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this non-dual substance Brahman, Paramātmā or Bhagavān. ( SB 1.2.11)

By Him in His unmanifested form the entire universe is pervaded, all beings are in Him but He is not in them. -> This refers to Brahman or impersonal aspect of Supreme Absolute truth.

Sri Krsna is personally present as paramatma in every living being. This is also confirmed by Sri Krsna in BG many times -

sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo - BG 15.15 I am seated in everyone’s heart - This prefers to Paramatma

      īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ
      hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati

The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone’s heart (BG 18.61)

This also refers to Paramatma. Thus Sri Krsna is personally present in every living being.

  • Hare Krishna,

Expectation leads to misery. Everything is not going to be like what we expect. We need to give space to some imperfections in life. Life cannot be a dream or  a perfect picture. There is ups and down in life we have to face some of our own karma reactions. Sometimes we may not like the place or people but have to become adjusted to the surroundings just to please some near and dear ones.  Sometimes we have to sacrifice our happiness for other's sake. When we expect something and it doesn't happen we get angered. So keep expectations low.

False ego  It is tough to realize that you are not this body. But constantly you need to remind yourself you are not this body.  I know it is tough. The more we identify ourselves with the body the more we are attached to people and places. The more the attachment the more is the anger. How?? you may ask.  If you put a label on things that this is mine. You feel a sense of ownership.  ( EXAMPLE-- You are late to the office you are being scolded by the boss.. do you retaliate then?? No you try to control your anger becoz  you feel boss is not your own thing. But you come back home in frustration and hit your child showing the anger which was pent up. Why did you hit your child?? Why not hit the boss back?? difference is.. You feel  you own this child and feel he wont go away from you maximum he can cry. Becoz of ownership you executed your anger on your child. But you couldn't execute the came anger on your boss becoz you thought the boss is not your own and he will kick you out of the job. So, to control  our anger we need to lose the pride of ownership or the false ego.  No one belongs to you. You don't own anything in this world. The proprietor of this whole world the owner is Lord. He owns everything. Though he owns everything He has no tinge of anger in Him. That is the greatness of Lord Sri Krishna.  So leave the false ego that you are this body and you own this that.. nothing is yours. In this way you can control anger.

Karma.  We come to this earth to complete our Karma with people and places. While completing we may have to face some people who may cause you trouble.  Why do they behave like this with you?  Why can't I avoid people or circumstances?  It is becoz you have to face these people and circumstance to complete you karma with them. Maybe in this life or past life you might have caused some pain to them. So, now it is their time to take revenge. Every action has equal and opposite reaction. Face it , tolerate it and complete the Karma. Don't create new karmic chains with these people by reacting to them. If you react you are making a new karma for which you will have to face them again to finish the karma cycle. Just bear it. Let it go.

Krishna says to see Him in all beings. Why cannot we see?

Simple we cannot see becoz at the moment we are in mode of passion ( anger) we lose the memory.  Memory that we all belong to Krishna and we all are part and parcel of Krishna.

Chapter 2 TEXT 63 ( BG) :--krodhad bhavati sammohah
    sammohat smrti-vibhramah
    smrti-bhramsad buddhi-naso
    buddhi-nasat pranasyati

From anger, delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost, one falls down again into the material pool.

Finally!!! To give advice it is easy.. heheh! I know it is difficult to implement. Practice makes man perfect. With age, maturity and Spiritual knowledge slowly we can overcome anger some day. Whenever you get anger just chant or move out of the place momentarily.

watch this vid. it is really nice!!!

  • Hare Krishna!

It is difficult, but we can practice lord's ask in BG Chap 12 Sloka 13-14

Nor does a devotee become his enemy’s enemy; he thinks, “This person is acting as my enemy due to my own past misdeeds. So it is better to suffer than to protest.”

He never hates any being even though they hate him and do him wrong. For he thinks that the Lord impels these beings to hate him and do him wrong for atoning for his transgressions.

    Sarvam Sri Krishnaarpanam!

    Hare Krsna

How to live life with people whom we don't like to face everyday but unfortunately have to face them ? What are different ways to get over this anger ?

By  appreciating & remembering those people who tolerate us. Nobody is perfect. We are ourselves not liked by all. But despite this, people are nice to us. They tolerate us. We need to appreciate their tolerance.

Krishna says to see Him in all beings. Why cannot we see?

Because we are envious of Krsna. We are in this world because we want to compete with Krsna or become Krsna. But we need to reform our attitude to become servant of Krsna.

Why find some people most irritable difficult to cope with ?

It is a test. Whether we tolerate or retaliate. If there is something sinful going on like exploitation then we need to stand against it. But irritation by other people needs to be tolerated. Krsna is testing us.
