  • I do not know much about humility... but when I see that people are actually doing more service than me and are chanting more than me and donating more than me... I feel a little bit inferior... (and thats okay... I've learned to accept that I'm a very small living being in the innumerable universes created by the Lord... I dont feel envy for them but... someday I hope to catch up... if situations favor...) This proves to me that I'm so damn small... I feel sorry for myself for being so small too.. :/ cant do much about it... -_-

For example... see this video of anna daan made by devotees of Lord Shiva at Dharmasthala https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liI3NjzN3NQ

See this video about Golden Temple...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWmy6GTnCCo

The question I ask myself is...  have I done any service to these souls... Have I assisted them to feed atleast one hungry soul... The resounding answer I get is NO... (brutally honest answer)...

Now I have a very very good reason to stay humble and gives me motivation to serve...

  • Awesome !!

  • Reading/hearing activities of great devotees regularly makes us humble

  • Humility does NOT mean being non-violent, not reacting to aggression or being timid & weak. It means working under the guidance of the Lord situated as Paramatma in the heart. When the heart is purified, the guidance of Lord becomes available.(Ref. BG 6.7 purport here)

BG 6.7 : For one who has conquered the mind, the Supersoul is already reached, for he has attained tranquillity. To such a man happiness and distress, heat and cold, honor and dishonor are all the same.

Bg 18.57 — In all activities just depend upon Me and work always under My protection. In such devotional service, be fully conscious of Me.

Bg 18.58 — If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

I had recently asked my seniors how to be more tolerant. The answer was - by tolerating. Same with humility. We become humble by practising humility. How does one practise humility? By understanding that one is not the body, one is soul and that one is part and parcel of supersoul. The duty of the soul is to serve the supersoul by re establishing its lost relationship with the supersoul.

When one has understood this and starts practising this, then one realises (as a byproduct) the importance of human form of life and the urgency to perfect our sadhana in this lifetime comes. When that happens, then small irritants and petty pricks on one's ego are not important at all. It is possible to transcend that and keep focus on the goal of life - to become a surrendered devotee.

    To answer your questions specifically:

Not reacting towards ugly things hurled towards is humility? Yes

Or retaliating against same makes us less humble. Depends on the situation. If the insult is hurled at oneself, better to let go. If the insult is hurled at Supreme Lord or Guru or Vaishnava, then one has to react. Then one should not tolerate.

Is Humility a sign of weakness or strength? Humility is a sign of weakness in the material world and a sign of strength in the spiritual world. It is one's choice what one is aiming for - material heights or spiritual upliftment.

    • Great insight..

    • Humility is a sign of weakness in the material world and a sign of strength in the spiritual world.   - but  there are many humble people who have achieved great material positions by Lord's grace ... Prahlad, Ambarish, Yudhisthir Maharaj, .... & many in the modern day also

I was talking about current modern world. All the greats you have mentioned are historical figures with very strong spiritual roots. Cannot compare to the modern world where its - an eye for an eye situation.

I personally know people who are very very humble, all of them have some connection to spirituality.

There are altruists also, who may be humble. They are rare.

When such a statement is made, it is for general people, not specific exceptions.

        • well it's not always true, & it's also not so rare as you think -- many of our country's scientists, teachers, doctors, sportspersons, leaders in every field infact ... have risen due to their talent, hardwork & diligence & for them humility is a source of great strength. no offense meant. pamho.

    • I think this phrase sums it up perfectly Radha:

Humility is a sign of weakness in the material world and a sign of strength in the spiritual world

Thank you I found this response helpful too :)
