How do I deal with funerals?

Haribol,

Here is the thing, as time goes by more and more people in my cricle will pass on. But as many of you I too know a bit about the spiritual things. Death is never really death for the soul.

My question is; how do you all deal with it if you yourself feels contented or happy while your relatives/friends or other people are in sorrow and not at all intrested in religion or even worse, hate any sort of religious boo-hoo in their words.

For me it is like this; as we know the soul is ever present spiritual in all realms and begets due all sorts of circumstances (3 modes of nature, karmic succession or any kind of religious efforts)material bodies, movable and non moveble it is propper to chant and do certain things for the soul who just left or is leaving. Because the person may be not at al intrested in Krishna , as left the body , the soul will get to know what is Krishna's plan. I mean Krishna's minions (in a way of speaking) always acts in order to the process to get the soul on the path set for it.(male female, animal, plant etc is just material not spiritual right?).

So what I did the last 3 funerals in 3 weeks of family memebers was; chant, put some left over death tulsi brenches/wood in their pocket/coffin and put a few drops of ganga water on their bodies. Burn inscence and pay respect to Krishna.

For whaty I read in many purana's Gita and so on is, the soul in front of death personafied is anxious (if not Krishna intrested) so all I try to do is give a little comfort to that soul. And hope that soul will gradually grow towards Krishna conciousness. May take a life or more lives, but will get there I geuss.

Same I do with animals who died in my surrounding. Or any living thing. Because why should I discriminate? I could be a animal, plant or whatever too if I am not careful, and would be very happy if a devotee or person by change give me some bliss or opertunity to get to a higher level so to speak.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

WOnderful. So inspired to read. THis is the best preaching you are doing - no topening your mouth to preach, doing by example, such that utlimate benefit is to the soul you are wanting to benefit. They will surely bless you and pray for you in some birth. Plus Krsna and Srila Prabhupada would be very pleased with you.

Now how to handle funerals when everyone is lamenting - we normally have a very sombre countenance. We dont smile or try to give them knowledge of soul, esp if we know they are not interested. The peace that we have knowing that only the body has changed, the soul continues in some other realm keeps us calm within. But we do not talk about it the company you have described.

One more way to benefit the soul is to chant maha mantra for the soul. Another is to recite all 700 shlokas of Bhagavad Gita (only shlokas) for the benefit of the departed soul(s). One can even fast on ekadasi and give the benefit to that departed soul(s).

Thank you for this service prabhu.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,

    Radha Rasamayi DD
