  • Hare Kṛṣṇa.

In the Vedic tradition, knowledge (vidyā) is classified into two broad categories:

    1. Ārṣa Vidyā (The Eternal Science of the Sages) – This is the divine, unchanging wisdom revealed by the Supreme Lord through the ṛṣis (enlightened sages) in the Vedas, Purāṇas, and Itihāsas. It is apauruṣeya (not of human origin) and thus free from the defects of limited perception, imperfection, and the four defects of human nature (bhrama, pramāda, vipralipsā, karaṇāpāṭava).
    2. Adhunika Vidyā (Modern Science) – This is the ever-changing, speculative knowledge based on sensory observation, experimentation, and human intellect. Since it depends on imperfect senses and evolving theories, it is not absolute and is subject to constant revision.

Modern science (adhunika vidyā) is based on inductive reasoning—scientists observe phenomena, propose theories, and later discard or modify them when new evidence emerges. For example:

    • Atomic Theory: First proposed by Democritus, then Dalton, then Rutherford, then Bohr, and now quantum physicists keep revising it.
    • Newtonian Physics vs. Einstein's Relativity: Newton's laws were considered absolute until Einstein proved them incomplete.
    • Medical Reversals: What is considered "scientific fact" in medicine today may be debunked tomorrow (e.g., dietary cholesterol myths).

In contrast, Ārṣa Vidyā is deductive—it comes from the Supreme Source (śabda-pramāṇa), and thus remains eternally true. The Bhagavad-gītā (7.2) states:

"I shall now declare unto you in full this knowledge, both phenomenal and numinous. This being known, nothing further shall remain for you to know."

Authority Over Speculation: A devotee relies on śāstra (scripture), which is nitya (eternal) and tripada-vibhūti (beyond the three modes of material nature). Scientists rely on anu-māna (speculative inference), which is always incomplete.

Direct Perception Through Transcendental Senses: A pure devotee, by the mercy of Kṛṣṇa, gains divya-jñāna (divine knowledge) beyond material logic. Just as Arjuna received divya-dṛṣṭi (BG 11.8), a devotee sees reality as it is.

Flaws in Material Knowledge: Since modern science rejects the existence of the soul (ātman), consciousness, and the Supreme Consciousness (Paramātmā), its conclusions are inherently limited.

It is said: "Science means two plus two equals four. But if science says two plus two equals five today and changes it to six tomorrow, it is not science—it is ignorance."

Therefore, when modern science contradicts Ārṣa Vidyā, we must reject it, not out of blind faith, but because eternal truth does not change. A devotee can confidently challenge material scientists because his knowledge comes from Kṛṣṇa, the source of all sciences (vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham, BG 15.15).

    • Hare Krsna Prabhu

Thank you for explaining the two different processes of acquiring knowledge elaborately.

What in your reply is ' Arsa vidya ' is described as the descending process by Srila Prabhupada. Perfect knowledge coming from the perfect source Sri Krsna to Brahma to Narada to Vyasadeva to Sukadeva Gosvami to Maharaja Pariksit and then again from Suta Gosvami to the sages of Naimisaranya headed by Saunaka Rsi and so on.

What in your reply is ' Adhunik vidya ' or modern science is described as the ascending process which consists of observation, inference and conclusion. As you rightly pointed out it is laced with four defects:

      1) The tendency to cheat.

      2) Imperfect senses of the observer.

      3) He is sure to make mistakes.

      4) The observer is invariably illusioned.

  • Hare Krsna

" In the Vedas it is said, yasmin vijnate sarvam evam vijnatam bhavati: if one properly understands God, he can understand any subject matter very nicely.
    As confirmed in Bhagavad-gita (10.11):
    tesam evanukampartham
    aham ajnana-jam tamah
    nasayamy atma-bhava-stho
    jnana-dipena bhasvata
Krsna, who is situated in the core of everyone's heart as the Supersoul, dissipates all the ignorance from the heart of a devotee. As a special favor, He enlightens the devotee with all knowledge by putting before him the torch of light. Therefore, it is possible for a devotee like Prahlada Maharaja, to solve the most difficult parts of problems because of his advanced Krsna consciousness. "
