Hare Krishna,

SB 3.27.5 Purport:

When one thinks that he is the best friend to his countrymen, to society or to humanity and he engages in various nationalistic, philanthropic and altruistic activities, all that is just so much concentration on sense gratification. The so-called national leader or humanist does not serve everyone; he serves his senses only. That is a fact. But the conditioned soul cannot understand this because he is bewildered by the spell of material nature.

Question:

I am unable to understand this point : The so-called national leader or humanist does not serve everyone; he serves his senses only. That is a fact.

Can you please help me to understand this point with some simple examples ?

  • In present stage of Kali Yuga the most leaders, spiritual and  national, live comfort life on behalf their naive followers. Such leaders always represent themselves as highly elevated, and their minds are  occupied with numbers, bills, and everything whats connected with money.

Their activities are just for representing themselves in the ''good light'' to the naive public, by  justifying  the money  taken from them.

One tipe of leaders claim that money goes for the spiritual welfare of everyone, and another tipe claim it is for economic progress of people in general. But because money is the sweeter then the honey, they both using  it for pleasing their senses.

Despite all of them claim to follow religious principles such as being vegetarian or no intoxication, they are blind to see how irreligious they are :

Religious principles that obstruct one from following his own religion are called vidharma. Religious principles introduced by others are called para-dharma. A new type of religion created by one who is falsely proud and who opposes the principles of the Vedas is called upadharma. And interpretation by one’s jugglery of words is called chala-dharma -SB.7.15.13

    • OK. Thank you for your time Respected Dean Prabhuji.

So, is it like one with polluted consciousness cannot actually think beyond his senses - in whatever he does ?

What if one thinks serving in the mode of goodness - say, his prime objective is to help others - Does he also serves his senses which I am not seeing out of my ignorance ?

What if one thinks serving in the mode of goodness - say, his prime objective is to help others - Does he also serves his senses ?

It is easy to understand in case of father son relationship. Father might do all sacrifices for a child, selfess, but it is sense gratification. Beacsue father thinks that child is his extension. The child is the part of the identity of the father. The child makes the man a "father" so the father is only serving his false identity and the way to serve this identity is by serving the child - selfless , in mode of goodness, duty bound and all that.

In case of national leader etc, they serving their false identity of national leader. Although it is rare to find such leaders, in the best case scenario, they r serving their own false identity of a good leader and the way to do it is by serving the senses of others. The others r a part of his false identiy of a leader or philanthropist or even anonymous donor or anything. It doesnt depend on even external recognition, it depends on internal spirit of the one serving. Since it is based on false ego or false identity it is bound to be for the false ego. It need not necessarily be for gross sense gratification, but it is for false ego.

        • Thanks for these nice insights -

          1. It need not necessarily be for gross sense gratification, but it is for false ego.

          2. The way to serve is - selfless , in mode of goodness, duty bound and all that.

      • SB 9.21.12I do not pray to the Supreme Personality of Godhead for the eight perfections of mystic yoga, nor for salvation from repeated birth and death. I want only to stay among all the living entities and suffer all distresses on their behalf, so that they may be freed from suffering.

SB 9.21.13By offering my water to maintain the life of this poor caṇḍāla, who is struggling to live, I have been freed from all hunger, thirst, fatigue, trembling of the body, moroseness, distress, lamentation and illusion.

SB 8.7.39People in general, being bewildered by the illusory energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are always engaged in animosity toward one another. But devotees, even at the risk of their own temporary lives, try to save them.
SB 8.7.40My dear gentle wife Bhavānī, when one performs benevolent activities for others, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, is very pleased. And when the Lord is pleased, I am also pleased, along with all other living creatures. Therefore, let me drink this poison, for all the living entities may thus become happy because of me.
