Hayagreeva is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu with the head of a horse and a human body of brilliant white colour He is worshipped as "Gnanaswaroopa”, embodiment of all spiritual growth, knowledge and wisdom.

Our sages and seers are supposed to have derived their spiritual insights and extraordinary powers by the grace of Lord Hayagreeva. Lalitha sahasranama ,the thousand names of Mother Lalithambika is considered to have been taught by Him to Agasthya rishi.

Mahanavami of Navarathri and Sravan-Pournami are considered special days for the worship this deity.

There are several stories about this unique avatar of Lord Vishnu.

One of the versions is that Vishnu revealed the Vedas to Brahma at the time of creation.Realising the power of these Vedas, two demons Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas from Brahma and hid them at the bottom of the ocean. When Brahma sought Vishnu’s help to retrieve the sacred texts, Vishnu took the Hayagreeva form ,killed the two demons and returned the Vedas to Brahma.

Another very interesting version is found in Devi Bhagwat Purana .A demon named Hayagriva(one with the face of a horse) ,son of Kasyapa Prajapati ,performed severe penance and obtained a boon from Goddess Durga ,that he could be killed only by another “Hayagriva” and none other.Having got this boon, he grew arrogant and started creating havoc in Devaloka.

The hapless Devas ,as usual, turned to Vishnu for deliverance from the evil and cruel demon. But the boon proved too powerful even to Vishnu as it was given by none other than the Supreme Goddess .

Even after a prolonged and fierce battle, the demon Hayagriva remained invincible. But the battle took its toll on Vishnu. He proceeded to Vaikunta to recuperate and replenish His power and strength. It is said that He sat in Padmasana with His head resting on the upper end of His taut bow and got engrossed in deep meditation(YogaNidra).

The Devas wanted Him to resume the battle but but none could arouse Vishnu from His yoganidra. So,Brahma thought of a plan .He created termites that would gnaw at the bowstring and when the string broke , the resonant sound created, would surely wake up the Lord.

The string snapped with the tremendous sound that reverberated through the entire universe, but because of the force with which it snapped , Vishnu’s head got severed from His body and fell into Lavan Sagar .Brahma’s plan had backfired and resulted in total disaster. The Devas were distressed and dismayed at the calamity.

Their only hope now,was to invoke the Mother Goddess. She had always protected them in times of dire need , time and again. So they prayed to Her and sought Her gracious help.

Pleased with their prayers She assured them that there was a divine purpose behind this incident.Vishnu would get His form back once this purpose was achieved.

She instructed them to attach the head of a horse to Vishnu’s neck, who would then become a “Hayagreeva” and therefore in a position to slay the demon.

Accordingly, Brahma attached the head of a white horse To Vishnu’s body and the revived Vishnu destroyed the demon.Later He resumed His usual form.

The incarnation ,Hayagreeva, however, came to be worshipped and revered as very personification of all knowledge (Jnananandmayam devam),speech,vidya(education)- of all types(adhaaram sarva vidyanam)----a victory, of brightness of wisdom over darkness of ignorance and the supremacy of the divine over the demoniac.

Tomorrow being Navami, it would be the right time to propitiate this powerful deity with the following stotra

    “Jnananand mayam devam nirmala sphatikakriteem

    Adhaaram sarvavidyanaam hayagreevam upasmahe.”

Read Hayagriva Upanishad for more information.

    Thank You

  • Hare Krishna,
It is complicated subject to put in simple terms for easy understanding..
Manvantara is the the life span of a manu. ( forefather of the human species on earth). He is created by Brahma.
Brahma's age is basically 100 celestial years.
each day of brahma ji is equal to 14 manus and corresponding manvantaras which is called a Kalpa.
2 kalpas of brahma ji constitute one day and one night of the brahma.
during the day time of brahma ...14 manus and manvantars happen creation happens
during the night everything is destroyed.
another day of brahma starts with another creation day. again 14 manus and manvantars happen. then another night of brahma takes place another dissolution occurs.
The actual duration of a Manvantara is seventy one times the number of years contained in the four Yugas,

so brahma's one day is so long as--> 14 X 71 X number of years contained in 4 yugas ( sat, treta, dwapar, kali).
here 14 becoz 14 manus are going to come and one will last for 71 X number of years in 4 yugas right .. I hope you follow.
    THAT IS
    Brahma ji's one day or kalpa is => 14 X 71 X 4,320,000 years.
SB 4.28.31, Purport:===>> There are fourteen Manus in one day of Brahmā. A manvantara, the life-span of one Manu, is given as 71 multiplied by 4,320,000 years. After one such Manu passes on, another Manu begins his life-span. In this way the life cycle of the universe is going on.

like that 2 kalpas of Brahma ji constitute on day and one night for Lord Brahma. Like this Brahma ji has 100 years of life span... you can calculate how much.
We are not at the 7th Manvantar time period. Still 7 more to go to complete Lord Brahma's one day time or one kalpa.
SB 4.30.49, Purport:==> "By human calculation, a thousand ages taken together is the duration of Brahmā's one day. And such also is the duration of his night." Brahmā's one day consists of one thousand cycles of the four yugas—Satya, Tretā, Dvāpara and Kali. In that one day there are fourteen manvantaras, and out of these manvantaras this Cākṣuṣa manvantara is the sixth. The various Manus existing in one day of Lord Brahmā are as follows: (1) Svāyambhuva, (2) Svārociṣa, (3) Uttama, (4) Tāmasa, (5) Raivata, (6) Cākṣuṣa, (7) Vaivasvata, (8) Sāvarṇi, (9) Dakṣasāvarṇi, (10) Brahma-sāvarṇi, ( 11) Dharma-sāvarṇi, (12) Rudra-sāvarṇi, (13) Deva-sāvarṇi and (14) Indra-sāvarṇi.
ya, everytime new manu comes, new set of Sapta rishi come, new Indra comes and Vishnu comes in different avatars.
Everything is repeated in cyclic pattern.
But some little bit changes ..
I have read in some place recently i was also taken back omg so many times Same Ramayana and Same Mahabharata taken place.
    let me post that part.

Becoz soul is eternal and has no death. There is only change in the body.
we have become many times Indra and we visited many times hell and heaven too. We have taken many numerous births on this planet in various species forms.
every dissolution we all souls go back to the tummy of Lord and rest there until the night of Brahma ji is over to come back again. This is a cyclic pattern.
Hope someday we may become one of the close associates of Lord Sri Krishna in another dwapar yuga. and get the oppurtunity to serve HIM. For that we need to have a lot of good karma bank balance.
    Anyhow

SB 8.24.8 — At the end of Brahmā’s day, when Brahmā felt sleepy and desired to lie down, the Vedas were emanating from his mouth, and the great demon named Hayagrīva stole the Vedic knowledge.

There is a bit of confusion in this part.
At some places it is mentioned Lord Vishnu takes up avatar of Lord HayaGreeva and kills the demon Ajnana and retrives the vedas to lord brahma.
At some places it is mentioned as demon was hayagriva.
He and his many servants always worship the incarnation known as Lord Hayagrīva. At the end of each kalpa, when the demon Ajñāna steals the Vedic knowledge, Lord Hayagrīva appears and preserves it. ( 5.18 SB)

"At the end of the millennium, ignorance personified assumed the form of a demon, stole all the Vedas and took them down to the planet of Rasatala.
