Details of parampara system

Hare Krishna Prabhuji and Mataji,

Please accept my humble obesiances.

Can anyone tell me when did the 4 parampara system start? If it was recommended in puranas then which Parampara did the Pandavas belong to and all the great devotee kings that follow?

Also we hear of great devotees like Meerabai and all whose Sampradaya is not clear. How can we consider follwing them in such a case?

Please clarify on this Parampara system and how should we approach this?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hare Krishna,

    sri-bhagavan uvaca
    imam vivasvate yogam
    proktavan aham avyayam
    vivasvan manave praha
manur iksvakave 'bravit ( BG 4.1)

The Blessed Lord said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Iksvaku.

In this millennium, the sun-god is known as Vivasvan, the king of the sun, which is the origin of all planets within the solar system. In the Brahma-samhita it is stated:

    yac-caksur esa savita sakala-grahanam
    raja samasta-sura-murttir asesa-tejah
    yasyajnaya bhramati sambhrta-kalacakro
    govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajam

"Let me worship," Lord Brahma said, "the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda [Krsna], who is the original person and under whose order the sun, which is the king of all planets, is assuming immense power and heat. The sun represents the eye of the Lord and traverses its orbit in obedience to His order."
The sun is the king of the planets, and the sun-god (at present of the name Vivasvan) rules the sun planet, which is controlling all other planets by supplying heat and light. He is rotating under the order of Krsna, and Lord Krsna originally made Vivasvan His first disciple to understand the science of Bhagavad-gita. ( Purport 4.1 BG)

"In the beginning of the Treta-yuga [millennium] this science of the relationship with the Supreme was delivered by Vivasvan to Manu. Manu, being the father of mankind, gave it to his son Maharaja Iksvaku, the King of this earth planet and forefather of the Raghu dynasty in which Lord Ramacandra appeared. Therefore, Bhagavad-gita existed in the human society from the time of Maharaja Iksvaku."

Therefore, Bhagavad-gita has to be accepted as it is, from the disciplic succession, and it is described herein that the Lord spoke to the sun-god, the sun-god spoke to his son Manu, and Manu spoke to his son Iksvaku.

    evam parampara-praptam
    imam rajarsayo viduh
    sa kaleneha mahata
yogo nastah parantapa ( 4.2 BG)

This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.

The guru was Dronacharya  for Pandavas and  Dronacharya's guru was his own father ( for philosophy) Sage Bharadwaj muni.   For martial arts his guru was  Agnivesha.

Bhradwaj muni is one of the sapta rishi.. unto whose gotra or lineage Dronacharya is born and his disciples Pandavas and Kauravas.
SAPTA RISHI's father is Lord Brahma

Disciplic succession is coming and traced back to Brahma and Sun God as well.

But as they are Kshetriyas and they are not going to transmit the information and beco me gurus'. But the gotra of Bharadwaj muni continues  for brahmins.  Dronacharya is a brahmin so he is guru and his son ( Ashwatthama)  will come under Bhradwaja gotra.

Vaishnavas are not falling under Brahmin caterogy.  Though Vaishnava have the thread cermony done like a Brahmin and they wear the jenevu they have two initiations usually.
    1. Brahminical initiation  2. Harinama Initiation given by the Vaishnav aacharya.
The Vaishnava first has to become a brahmina and then has to get harinama diksha and become a Vaishnava.

Vaishnavas embrace all communities. Those who know and Love Krishna and follow the 4 regulatory principles are considered to be considered a Vaishnava.

    Now, coming to the Meerabai.

Meerabai is a Rajput a Kshtriya and also a woman. So her parampara is not important. We can follow her take inspiration but as she is a woman we wont reach out to any sampradaya so to get into " PARAMPARA

SYSTEM) you have to follow the lineage. ( take any of the 4 sampradays and proceed by taking Brahmincal initiation first then Harinama dikhsha from a bonefide guru in the lineage )

    Hare Krsna

Can anyone tell me when did the 4 parampara system start?

It is not possible to give an exact date of when any of the 4 parampara started.

What we know from SB is this - Lord Brahma was born from lotus from Sri Garbhodakasayi Vishnu. After his birth he heard words tapa. Then he performed tapasya for for one thousand years by the calculations of the demigods. Lord Sri Krsna being pleased by Lord Brahma's tapasya then showed a glimpse of Vaikuntha to Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma asks some questions about Lord's manifestations, Lord's energies, etc. At that time Sri Krsna imparts Lord Brahma with transcendental knowledge. So this happened before Lord Brahma began creation for the first time.

which Parampara did the Pandavas belong to and all the great devotee kings that follow?

A vaishnava guru parampara or Vaishnava sampradaya is a disciplic succession of gurus and shishyas that continue the lineage of transcendetal teachings. Pandavas were Kshatriya rulers, they certainly received transcendetal instructions, but it was not their duty to instruct others. Their main duty was to adminster. So they are not part of disciplic succession.

Pandavas received instructions from Krsna, Narada muni, Vyasadeva, Bhishma and from many other sages.

We hear of great devotees like Meerabai and all whose Sampradaya is not clear. How can we consider follwing them in such a case?

Sri Krsna in 11th canto of SB narrates story of a brahmana who had 24 gurus. These gurus are - earth, wind, sky , water, fire, moon,sun, pigeon, python, honey bee, honey collector, bird, sea, moth, elephant, deer, fish, prostitute, child, maiden girl, snake, arrow maker, spider, caterpillar.

How many of these 24 gurus come in which of 4 Sampradaya ?

Please clarify on this Parampara system and how should we approach this?

Receiving transcendental knowledge first requires correct attitude for such knwoledge. Propagating or spreading of the knowledge is responsibility of  Parampara.

We as receivers of knowledge should focus on cultivating the right attitude to receive knowledge rather than shopping for guru or parampara.

If we are sincere we will be directed by Lord in the heart to a bonafide guru parampara. We should not approach this analytically like Who is guru of meerabai, who are her followers, when did that parampara start, etc. Such analytical may be appropriate for purchasing a used car, but not for receiving knowledge.

We have to seek inspiration from great devotees like Meerabai on how intese & natural their devotion to Sri Krsna was.

All the gurus in all vaishnava sampradaya are very great devotees. But all great devotees need not have disciples or be part of a known parampara.

    Hare Krsna
