Contradictory Behaviour of the Lord in MB war

In BG Krishna says that he knows the past present and future and every thing happens by his will but when karna used his Shakti dart on Ghatotkach he began jumping and dancing on the terrace of the chariot clapping his arms.

Moreover he tells Arjun that ever since he had heard of karna posessing the Shakti dart he has been in constant ANXIETY.

Why should the supreme God, the knower of everything be in constant ANXIETY and behave like this?

Hare Krishna! Dandvats pranam 🙏

  • In the Mahabharata, particularly in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna conveys that He is aware of all that has happened and will happen. His anxiety over Karna's Shakti dart highlights the importance of the sports games
moment and the choices made by the characters involved.

        Hare Krsna

Thank you for your prompt and accurate response.

Why should the supreme God, the knower of everything be in constant ANXIETY and behave like this?

Firstly we cannot ask a Why question to God. Because there is no end to those Why questions and ultimately the final answer culimnates at Sri Krsna is fully independent to do whatever He wants as per His personal desre. This is the first Shloka of Srimad Bhagavatam. SB 1.1.1

Secondly I don't see any contradiction. They are completely aligned with Sri Krsna's Purpose and Sri Krsna's love.

        There are 2 perspectives

        1. Sri Krsna's Purpose of removing elements of adharma & 2. Sri Krsna's personal love towards Pandavas.

        1. Sri Krsna's Purpose of removing elements of adharma :  Sri Krsna in BG 4.8 clearly states His purpose of appearance.

        paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ
        vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām
        dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya
        sambhavāmi yuge yuge

To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium. (BG 4.8)

In the context of the battle. Karna was an obstacle to the above purpose. The reason was Karna had Shakti weapon which could have killed Arjuna. If Arjuna was killed, Pandavas would have lost the battle. So Sri Krsna's purpose was at risk. Now Sri Krsna is certainly all powerful God and nobody could stand against Him. But that is not the role He was playing on the battle. On the battle He was playing role of strategist and charioteer. So as a strategist He celebrated when His strategy to safeguard Arjuna worked.

        2. Sri Krsna's personal love towards Pandavas : The Pandavas are very dear to Sri Krsna. Brajvasis, His parents & Balarama are probably the only ones at that time who were more dear to Sri Krsna than Pandavas. It is natural to be in anxiety for safety of loved ones. It is an expression of love. Karna's shakti weapon is a threat to His dear Arjuna. Sri Krsna although is God, has promised of not raising a weapon. He can break His promise, but that is last resort. So His strategy to protect Arjuna from Shakti weapon worked. So it is natural for Sri Krsna to celebrate.

I do not see any contradiction in Sri Krsna's behaviour or anxious feeling. It may appear contradictory if someone only thinks God can do anything, anytime, anywhere. While that is true, that is NOT how God functions.

Take this example : If I want to enjoy playing chess, then I need play by the rules of chess. If I say I will not adhere to rules, then the purpose of playing chess is lost. There will be no fun left in playing if I can move anything anywhere anytime.

Another example : A person may be the sole owner of a bank. He also has a bank account. As account holder of the bank He is expected to follow all rules like any other account holder. He cannot take unlimited loans because bank belongs to him. That would defeat the purpose of the bank in first place.

Similarly Sri Krsna as Supreme personality of Absolute truth has created this material world for some purpose(s). For that purpose to be fulfilled, the material world has to function by certain rules created by Him. Sri Krsna mentions this in many places (including BG 4.13). When Sri Krsna appears within this material world, He has specific purpose of His appearance. He still agrees to play by the rules(on most occasions) of material world which He created as God. Sri Krsna doesn't break the rules of material world unnecessarily to fulfill the purpose of His appearance.

Because one of the purposes of His appearance is to teach everyone that by following the rules of creator an individual will benefit. By breaking rules, we will suffer.

        Hare Krsna

  • Hare Krishna,

O Arjuna, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, I know everything that has happened in the past, all that is happening in the present, and all things that are yet to come. I also know all living entities; but Me no one knows. (BG 7.26)

Karna had this weapon and that can be used only one time on anyone. If he used it on Arjuna than there is possible chance of game end result to change.  So, Karna made him use it on Ghatokach and once it was one. Krishna showed happiness by clapping his hands and dancing. Because Arjuna had only three big opponents 1. Bhishma  2. Dronacharya  3. Karna.

Bhishma was invincible and Krishna had to play a game to trick him by bringing in Shikandi into the war scene

Dronacharya also was guru of Arjuna. So, To divert his attention and save Arjuna by making Yudhishtra tell a lie that Ashwattama is dead. ( because Arjuna was very relectant to fight with BHISHMA and DRONA) grandfather and Guru.

The last one was Karna ( who was surya putra and Kunti putra and first among the Pandavas). Karna had mastered the skill of archery and had equal caliber as much as Arjuna. To trick Karna to use that Shakti Drat on Ghatotkach went as per the plan of Krishna.

See, In a chess game also.

If one wrong move the game result can change totally. When Karna used that weapon on Ghatkach .. Krishna became axiety free.

Krishna already knows even Sahadeva already knew the war results before the war itself. Sahadev ji was an Astrologer and he had the power to see the future also. But Krishna told Sahadeva not to declare the end result. If the end result of the war is know the Pandavas wont fight and would relax as they know the result already.... if the karma of war is not done.. the game results in a different ending.

Look let us say you have an EXAM TOMORROW and some Astrologer predicted that tomorrow you will pass with flying colors.

WOULD YOU STUDY?  You wont study as you know the results are in your favor already. So, you will simply relax before the exam and wouldn't even bother to study a bit.

Then surely you will fail ..

Inorder that the result to be favorable you need to be doing the karma of studying before the exam strictly.

So, Krishna knows everything but to get to the result desired we need to do the action. So, as per the plan of Krishna, Karna used that weapon on Ghatokach and exhausted it and now  Arjuna is clearly the winner as that was the only one time use weapon.

So Krishna was displaying some anxiety whether Karna will use it on Ghatotkach or Arjuna.

FREEWILL IS GIVEN BY LORD to KARNA .. Karna has to decide what to do.

Krishna never interferes in the freewill. There is always 2 choices given to you ( or here Karna) Karna could use it on Ghatotkach or Arjuna it is upto his will.  Each one will have a different outcome.

    Hare Krishna

    • Hare Krishna Prabhu. That was a good answer. Thanks for the in depth explanation 🙏

    • I thank You whole heartedly for the in-depth answering but Arjun was completely aware regarding the outcome of the battle due to BG sung by the lord. Krishna had told him that except you 5 the warriors on both the sides will be slain. He had also specifically mentioned that warriors like bhisma drona karna were already slain and he was only supposed to act as an instrument and most importantly he had seen all the warriors going in the jaws of death in the vishwa Rupa darshan.  Pandavas were not kaamchor in any way.

Coming back to bhisma then I beg to differ that bhisma was tricked. Shikhandi was purely a man and not an eunuch. This is in vedabase and many other MB. She had done a temporary sex change with a yaksha. Only bhisma knew this and so he was avoiding. That's his mistake or free will. Also shikhandi previously as amba had received a boon from Lord Shiva and boon and curses are destined to happen. Shikhandi was a great warrior who remained in the battlefield for 18days and was killed in the night by ashwatthama. Similarly neither was drona tricked nor karna. Well let's not get into all these things as it quite often ends up in quarrels 🙏🙏

      • How was dronacharya not tricked?
