I think it is your humility that you say taht you do not understand this pastime.
A lot of things in the Bhagawatam we find a little odd, or if I am permitted to say, incredulous. Still we read them and believe that at soul level, the development is happening. In fact, just sharing with you, whenever I have this kind of feeling, it is succeeded by wonderful realisations.
You will understand it when you ask the lord for a wife and He provides you one. Believe me, marraige is big time distraction. At that time, you will initially struggle to do your sadhana, and after some time, you will be firm in atleast doing the least bit of sadhana every day ('least bit' is highly subjective, its like apetite, everyone has their quota for satiation). At that time, when you are attracted to your wife, still you want to pray to the lord because it is your duty, or that you are also attracted to the lord, that you will REALISE this pastime.
Sometimes I think it is just as good that we do not understand everything we read in the scriptures at one go - it makes us read again and secondly, we are climbing one step at a time, it is the joy of little understandings and realisations taht makes this spiritual journey so enriching.
My advise to you is to read this pastime and keep it in your mind's hard disk. Someday, you will yearn to become Kardama Muni, not dread it.
Sorry, just penning down my thoughts - read your post just now. Not that I am a realised soul, am struggling in my journey, faltering more than succeeding. Please keep me in your prayers.
As you know, the norm is to either join temple and be brahmachari or stay at home. If someone stays at home, then he is to get married. If taht person is not willing to get married as yet, its ok, maybe he can wait and marry later on. Generally it is seen taht devotees think of being single, but by the time they cross 35-40, they want to marry. Maybe this devotee (I am assuming he is one) is also in that category. In taht case, he should try to perfect his sadhana, so taht as and when marraige happens, he doesnt get distracted by the demands of family life.
My example is always of Kardama Muni. Please read Canto 3 of Srimad Bhagawatam.
