Hare Krishna!
It's best to travel in a single boat, instead of 2.
look my friend it is very nice that you been intiated at rudra sampradya as in shastras we find that after shiva's grace we get the feeling or capability to serve lord.
now coming to mantra it is nice that you want to chant hare krishna mahamantra but u should at least chant the minimum requirement of mantra provided by your guru and then you can chant hare krishna as much time as you can chant.
radhey radhey prabhuji...
Hare Krsna Prabhu,
Although Chanting the Hare Krsna Mahamantra it cannot be strictly categorized as disobeying your guru's orders, since he never explicitly told you not to do it, it is better to err on the conservative side. That is, you can respectfully bring up this matter with your guru, and seek his permission to chant Mahamantra then you are sealing the deal for sure and you can continue chanting with more enthusiasm and less worry.
HariBol!
my guru has left his body
Hare Krsna
It is wonderful that you are initiated by Rudra Sampradaya. This is a bonafide vaishnava sampradaya and Visnu Swami is one of the great acarya who has spread vaishnavism through this sampradaya.
I am almost sure that the Mantra given by your guru is a vishnu mantra. If you miss chanting the mantra given by your guru then it can be considering the disobeying of guru. But if you like chanting Hare Krsna Mahamantra and chant along with the other vishnu mantra it is not disobeying. Because after all both the mantras are glorification of Vishnu/ Krsna.
Even if you do not chant Hare Krsna mantra but chant only mantra given by your guru then also it is alright. However it is advisable to read the books of Srila prabhupada because they are treasure house of divine knowledge and almost 99% of what Srila prabhupada writes is applicable to all vaishnava sampradayas.
Lord chaitanya, Srila prabhupada encouraged chanting of holy names of god - Any bonafide name of god which is given by representative of God
