First of all guru-puja

When we returned to the temple Prabhupada greeted Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Partha-sarathi and then mounted the vyasasana for guru-puja and class. He noted the absence of Pradyumna and inquired where he was. When we informed him that he was doing his puja, worshiping his newly-acquired salagrama-sila, Prabhupada was not at all happy. "First of all guru-puja," he said with annoyance. "Tell the nonsense. First of all guru-puja."

For class, which was short, he spoke from th

Don't change

Radhaballabha prabhu sent a letter from Los Angeles about the upcoming publication of a book on the philosophy of Lord Kapila. As well as asking Srila Prabhupada to write a Foreword for the book, he expressed some reservations about the title and suggested an alternative for Srila Prabhupada's approval. "We would like to call the book Teachings of Lord Kapila. The subtitle 'The Son of Devahuti' may sound a bit humorous to Americans because that particular type of wording was frequent

Tulasi is never bad

I received a letter from the Melbourne devotees today explaining that their tulasi plants have red spider mites. They wanted to know if the leaves could still be offered to the Deities.

I asked Prabhupada and he replied, "Yes, tulasi can be offered in any condition. Tulasi is never bad."

This morning Prabhupada accepted an invitation to visit the house of a leading Madwari business man. Formerly the Madwari community has not paid very much attention to us. But a

Prabhupada's association

For Srila Prabhupada there is no stopping. He is like the ocean, with a limitless depth of devotion that produces unceasing waves of krsna-bhakti. Even in his quieter times he overflows with Krsna consciousness. In the evening I went into his room and he was eating pomegranate. The half-eaten fruit was sitting on his desk, the bright red seeds exposed. As I reached out to clear it away, he said, "Just see, all the universes are packed up just like this, and the total is t

Real yoga system

He said that the real business was yajnarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah. People were giving their money in good faith to Balaji. "That money should not be utilized for any other purpose except yajna. First of all, you have to decide like that, then we can give you direction. First of all, you have to decide that this money, not a single farthing should be spent for any other purpose than performing yajna, then we can give you right direction. And if you have plan

Soon after this, in 1978, he was in India. At that time in history, not a single foreign devotee of ISKCON had ever been inside Jagannath’s temple in Puri. In one exchange between Bhakti Tirtha Swami Maharaj andPrabhupada, Prabhupada was so pleased with his service that he toldhim, “You will see Krishna in this lifetime.” So, Bhakti Tirtha SwamiMaharaj thought, “may be I will see Krishna as Jagannatha in thislifetime”. He calculated, “I have a black complexion, perhaps they willthink I am from S

Potency of Damodara-lila Pastime

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura describes in Krishna-samhita that in each of the pastimes of Krishna where confrontations come, like with either demons or in some cases with Indra or Brahma, Krishna is removing the obstacles on the path of bhakti. In this case of Damodara-lila with Nalakuvera and Manigriva, Krishna is removing the pride and arrogance coming from the feeling that one has an aristocratic birth and is wealthy. Just exactly as Narada described in his contemplation, this kind of pride giv

Mother Yasoda held Krishna, and began to scold Him. “I’ll give You such a beating!“ she threatened. “I know You go from house to house, stealing. You are a thief (caura)!“ Krishna replied, “Oh! Why are you saying that I am a
thief? There is no thief in My dynasty, in Nanda Baba’s dynasty. Perhaps there is a thief in your dynasty.“
He was so cheeky. He had heard Yasoda Maiya and Nanda Baba talking about Mother Yasoda’s forefather called

Srila Prabhupada: be straightforward

I recently sent out a sankirtan story by Madhumangala Prabhu called 'coming back.' When I first read it I felt a little uncomfortable about sending it out because it seemed to be a little shady. However, the exchange seemed to end alright so I sent it out. Then I received this letter from an old friend, Jayarama Prabhu, a devotee in Florida:

"All glories to all book distributors, but I'm not so sure Madhumangala dasa's transcendental trickery is the way to change hearts. Brian could very likely h

Devadhideva Mahadeva Sankara(Siva) pleased his worshipful deity Sri Krsna and asked for the boon to have darsana of Sri Krsna's childhood pastimes. The Supreme Lord Sri Krsna ordered him to situate himself in Nandagaon in the form of a hill. Sri Sankara Mahadeva followed this order and became Nandisvara Hill. He then waited for the arrival of his worshipful deity. To fulfill the desire of the exalted Vaisnava Sri Sankara, Sri Krsna performed

Coming Back

This morning, after a harinam on a Diwali procession here in Durban, South Africa, I waited with the other the devotees in the party in front of a busy supermarket for Vibhu Caitanya Prabhu to pick us up and take us back to the temple. I noted that there were a lot of shoppers entering and leaving the store. While the devotees went in to get some cold drinks, I stayed outside and distributed books to people waiting in their cars and to the shoppers.

I approached a young lady who had just pulled u
