Devotees and guests celebrate Deepavali

HUNDREDS of devotees and guests flocked to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness Malaysia (ISKCON), Kuching Branch’s newly constructed multipurpose hall at Jalan Batu Kawah in Kuching for a joyous Deepavali Open House celebration.

Themed One Malaysia Deepavali Open House, the celebration on Saturday was attended by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Tan Joo Phoi, Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang and Indian community leaders.

During the celebration, ISKCON Kuching president Kripa Prabhu Dasa appealed to the State Government to declare Deepavali a public holiday in Sarawak.

He said people from all races and backgrounds could then visit their Indian friends during the festival.

Meanwhile, Kripa said volunteers would conduct yoga and tai ci classes in the hall while the rooms at the back would be used for tuition classes for children.

The 7,000sq ft multipurpose hall, which cost about RM400,000, can accommodate some 1,000 people. It was officially opened in August.
