Don’t Waste a Moment

Those who have realized that this human life offers an invaluable opportunity to work towards attaining the supreme goal, prize every moment of it. They are unwilling to waste even an instant in any other endeavor. They know that living entities in other species of life do not have the facility or good fortune to make progress towards the supreme goal and, accordingly, they see no value in living their lives in the manner of the lower species. Hence, upon attaining this extremely rare human life

Thought Of The Day

The preaching enthusiasm will come from our following the
principles of purity. Purity comes from sincerely following the principles of
devotional service. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.31.19), Sukharevo, February 2003.

Substance, not sentiment

Posted on June 26, 2011Filed under BVKS SangaAnything without substance will not last, so just demonstrate sincerely thatwe have got solid ground beneath us, not that we have only some sentiment, that’s all. Many fanatic spiritual movements have come and gone, but withoutthe flawless philosophy of Krishna, they cannot stand. Therefore I wantespecially that my books and literature should be distributed profusely. This is our substance, real philosophical information, not some weaksentiments. So try

Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Jayatah

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

We were on traveling sankirtan in Vavuniya, the northern province of Sri Lanka, where until three years ago the civil war was raging. Although now the situation has calmed down, the police are still patrolling every corner. This place is famous because it's where most of the Tamil Tigers are imprisoned.

This part of Sri Lanka was cut off for many years from the rest of t

Srila Srivasa Pandita (Pastimes)

Srila Srivasa Pandita

Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura, the Vyasadeva of Sri Gaura-sundara's pastimes, has sung the praises of Srivasa Pandita in this way:

"It was in Srivasa Pandita's house that Sri Caitanya enacted His pastimes of sankirtana. Those four brothers (Srivasa, Sri Rama, Sripati and Srinidhi) were continuously engaged in singing the names of Sri Krsna. They worshipped Sri Krsna and bathed in the Ganges thrice daily."

These four brothers previously lived in the district of Sri Hatta. Later

Personal Ecstasy

It didn't happen often, but sometimes Srila Prabhupada was overcome by ecstatic emotions while lecturing. It had happened in the San Francisco storefront in the early days, when Prabhupada was describing Lord Caitanya's mood of separation from Krsna. It also happened in Gorakhpur, India, while Prabhupada was seated before the Deities of Radha-Madhava, discussing Krsna's pastimes.

Now it happened in the tiny temple room in Sydney before the Deities of Radha-Gopinatha. Not long into

Food for Thought This Week

Prabhupada: You should always remember that either grhasthaor brahmacäri or sannyäsi, nobody can strictly follow all the rules and regulations of them. In the Kali-yuga it is not possible. So if I find simply fault with you, and if you find fault with me, then it will be factional, and our real business will be hampered. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu has recommended that hari-näma, chanting Hare Krsna mantra, should be very rigidly performed, which is common for everyone: grhastha, vänaprastha o

The Perfection of Relationship

The individual living being exists in a relationship between that which is him and that which is not him. Those who find this relationship painful and want to remove the pain sometimes deny this relationship by stating that the individual self is all that exists and therefore there is no such thing as relationship. They posit a self which exists in an impersonal, formless, relationshipless oneness and imagine that they have become liberated from all the pain of relationship. However, since our v

It’s a rare person who can avoid the trap of reaction spirals. This is the dangerous tendency to overreact to something – and then compound the problem by over analyzing it. Here is a typical example: someone criticizes some aspect of your work. You overreact to the criticism and become defensive. Then you spend the next half hour analyzing the critical comments, convincing yourself they are incorrect. A whirlwind of thoughts passes through your mind. You focus on the criticism. The more you do,

Entering the grihasta ashram is not just for sense enjoyment, but it is to have a son like Dhruva Maharaja, a son like Bhaktisiddanta Prabhupada, a son like our Prabhupada so that you can also be transferred to the kingdom of God. It is very important. You should train your children, especially if you have a son it is your duty to train your son to be a perfect brahmacari from the very childhood. Not that he should be entangled in this material world any longer. It i

Question: Which is Better: 16 Rounds or 64 Rounds?

Dear Gurudeva,
Please accept my humble obeisances at your feet,

Recently I was discussing with a  devotee who said that chanting 64 rounds of japa mala every day is the highest service, even if it means compromising one's facility to perform devotional service. But, Gurudeva, isn't it better to do 16 rounds of chanting and utilize the remaining time for some sort of service such as preaching or book distribution? Which is better chanting 16 rounds

According to an old parable, three men were working hard cutting stone from
large blocks of granite. When asked what they were doing, the first fellow
said, “I’m making bricks.” The second said, “I’m creating a foundation for
a large building.” The third person answered, “I’m building a cathedral.”

They are doing the exact same job, and all three responses were accurate,
but they reveal the huge difference attitude makes. It’s the difference
between tolerating or enjoying one’s life, between thinking
