  • Yesterday I heard a lecture Prabhupada gave on Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.25.23 on November 23, 1974, in Mumbai. Generally, people are suffering. No one can say boldly, “I am not suffering.” Everyone must be suffering. They have dozens of tablets to mitigate the suffering. Foolish people don’t understand. They’re thinking they are satisfied. This is maya, illusion. There are three kinds of suffering: adiatmika, sufferings of the body and mind; adibautika, sufferings from other living entities, such as dogs barking at night, making it impossible to sleep, or enemies; and adidaivika, famine, drought, earthquake, over which you have no control. You think you are happy in this material world. But there is birth, death, disease, and old age.

Those who are Krishna conscious are suffering, but not so acutely. They are tolerant. A sadhu knows that he is not this body. If you understand that you are not the body, although there is suffering, you will not feel it so much. If one has a car and has an accident, and if he is absorbed in possession of the car, then he suffers more. Sufferings are like seasonal changes. In the summer, fire brings suffering, but in the winter, it brings pleasure. Water is pleasing in the summer, but it brings suffering in the winter. This is due to the skin. Because you think you are this body, you suffer more. The more we are in bodily consciousness, the more we suffer. If one tends to thinks one is a Muslim, then he thinks he has to fight with the Hindus. If they know they are all servants of Krishna, they won’t fight or riot over national identity. Those who are always thinking of Krishna know that even if they are suffering, it is Krishna’s desire. Queen Kunti said to Krishna, “When we are in danger, You are with us. Better let my suffering continue so I can remember You intensely.”

When a devotee suffers, he thinks it is due to his past misdeeds. He thinks, “Krishna is making me suffer a little.” How much Prahlada suffered from his father, but he was silent. Haridasa Thakura was beaten by the Muslm ruler, and he tolerated. It is understood that when he was beaten, Lord Caitanya was on his back, and he did not suffer. A devotee is educated to tolerate. At the same time, he is compassionate and spreads Krishna consciousness so others may be happy. Prahlada said, “I know how to be happy, but I am suffering for these fools, and I don’t want to go back to Godhead unless I can bring them with me.”

When the sravanam-kirtanam is about Krishna, then there is no suffering or unhappiness. Other hearing and talking will not reduce suffering. Devotional service is so nice that even in the material world, the devotee will not suffer material miseries. Because his mind is absorbed in thought of Krishna, he does not suffer.
  • Dear Ahimsa,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
I’m sorry to hear that your dog and cat died within a recent week. One gets attached to pets, and it can be a loss. You were chanting Hare Krishna to them, so that was auspicious.
Thank you for reading some of my books. I have a website—www.sdgonline.org—and I post a daily journal there. You can keep in touch with my thoughts and activities if you read it.
You ask me when I knew I was ready to accept sannyasa. Prabhupada invited me to take sannyasa in 1972, and so on his invitation, I felt I was ready.
Yours in the service of Prabhupada,

    Satsvarupa dasa Goswami

  • MOst dearest Maharaj Pls accept my humble pranam all glories to Srila Prabhupad.
  • Dear Satsvarupa Dasa Maharaja,
Hare Krsna! Please, accept my prostrated obeisances in the dust of Your lotus feet. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and You!

I was going to write You a letter, but as usually had no determination to do it. I am very thankful to You, because You are one of my vartma-pradaksaka guru. One of the first books I read on KC was Your `Readings in Vedic Literature' (in Russian, in those time it was `samizdat'--self-made).It was about 1988. I liked the book, but I was afraid to join the movement. I joined about 10 years later... Years later I've bought the book in good polygraphic form and re-read it.

I guess that Your friendship suggestion is by the mercy of Your disciple Srimati Ishana, who edits Russian versions of Your books and whom I like a lot and accept as a diksa-guru. She is really a very good devotee and very nice and sublime personality. Sometimes she allows me to make some minor service for her. I appreciate it a lot. She is very grateful.

Another book I like a lot is Your `From Imperfection, Purity Will Come About' (in Russian). I always admire how senior devotees and even sannyasis, our spiritual masters open their hearts and express their deep humility. I touches feeling to tears.

Unfortunately I am still a prakrta-bhakta if a bhakta at all, so I pay my obeisances from a distance. I am very grateful for having such an opportunity to write this message to You.

    Please, excuse my unintentional offenses.

    Om swasti.
