When, where and how did you come into contact with the Hare Krishna Movement?
I bought a book at a Grateful Dead concert in 1994 and it changed my life. I've intensely studied Srila Prabhupada's books ever since. I used to stay for several nights at a time here and there during my homeless hitchhiking years at the Columbus temple and New Vrindaban. I remember one time I painted the entire basement of the Columbus House yellow for Malati. I also hung out at the Krishna camp at the '96 National Rainbow Gathering in Missouri and camped beside Prithu' s camp at the '98 National Rainbow Gathering in Arizona. I formally moved into the Denver, Colorado Temple in '96-'97. I drifted away for many years and explored other spiritual paths. I spent several weeks at Gita Nagari in 2001, as well as several weeks at the Washington D.C. temple that year. Krishna by His kind mercy has recently led me back to Himself, and I now completely embrace Krishna Consciousness and seek to spread the glories of the Holy Names as much as possible.
Name the nearest or most frequently Visited ISKCON temple/ centre and name few of the devotees whom you know.
The closest Temples to me are New Vrindaban and Gita Nagari. I have known many devotees in the past, and am friends with many presently. I am a disciple of His Holiness Bhaktiratna Sadhu Swami Gaurangapada.
Please describe yourself so that other like minded devotees can find you.
I'm 37 years old, and have been a bookworm since I was a child. I read mostly science books as a child and by age 8 had read the entire Encyclopedia. I began reading about reincarnation and alternative spiritualties at age 11, and by the time I first read "The Science of Self Realization" at age 17, I had aquired a vast amount of knowledge of religion and spirituality. Srila Prabhupada's words clicked with me instantly.
My parents, though Lutheran Christians, encouraged me to explore spirituality for myself and find what I felt comfortable with. I love them for allowing me that freedom. They continue to be supportive of me being a devotee. I've taken my mother in the past to visit both New Vrindaban and Gita Nagari, and she enjoyed both places.
I really love chanting japa, reading, listening to lectures and Kirtans/Bhajans, writing about Krishna Consciousness, preaching, meeting and serving devotees, and trying to help potential devotees.
I have played drums since I was 8 years old, and can play mrdanga, djembe, and drum set. I also play guitar, and would love to learn to play the harmonium.
All I desire in life is to serve Lord Krishna and His devotees in whatever ways that I can. I hand out small books and pamphlets to people at grocery stores in my area for free just to spread the Holy Names. I'm currently writing a devotional book. Hare Krishna!
What are your expectations from this community?
To meet Devotees that I can correspond with to help me advance spiritually.
Describe any specific service you would love to offer to Lord Krishna & His devotees?
Anything needed.
