If I'm a little wretched and maya is trying to pull me away from Krsna - should I believe Krsna doesn't want me and give up trying to be a devotee? I don't want to worship Krsna if Krsna doesn't want me - I'm not gonna force myself on him, I love him!

Krishna wants us all to return to him, there is no question of Krishna not wanting us. But... maya has a tight hold... maya will not let go without a fight. As you start to make progress you will likely stumble over maya more than once. Fully surrender to Krishna and guru, and they will get you past maya. It may not always be easy, that is why association with devotees, and doing service, is so important.
Would Govinda tell me I can't chant for whatever reason? The only intoxicants I do is cigarettes and caffeine. I'm a bit lustful, I don't gamble and I don't eat meat or fish though I do have eggs occasionally mixed with stuff like candy bars. I'm a rainbow hippie and I think it might be demons trying to shut out my light. What do you guys think? Would Krsna tell me not to chant?
Chanting is always better than not chanting. If you are not following all the principles progress will be slower. But slow progress is better than no progress. Do not chant while thinking the chanting will 'forgive' you of your continued offenses, but chant with the thought of making advancement.
Prabhupada answered this on a morning walk:
Guru-kṛpa: So they say, "Then my chanting is useless? So I should stop?" That's what they say.
Prabhupāda: No, not useless. But just like if you kindle fire and at the same time pour water, it will take long time. To kindle fire, make it dry, keep it dry. Then it will be very quickly successful. So you are committing offenses, at the same time chanting, so by chanting effect, you will come to that stage, but it will take time. If you want to be transferred to the spiritual world quickly, just like if you want to ignite the fire very quickly, you must keep it dry. If you simply put on the wet wood, then the fire will not be very powerful. It will be... It will take time. The fire will be blazing fire. Then it will dry. It will take... Better put dry wood to make it successful. This is the process. The effect of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa will not go in vain, but it will take time. Nāmnad balād yasya hi pāpa-buddhiḥ. Because he is thinking "By the strength of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, I can do anything, all sinful activities, and it will be adjusted," that is the greatest offense, not only offense, the greatest offense.

If you are falling from a cliff do you simply allow urself to fall free? or do you try ur best to hold to something like a tree branch or some stone and try to ur level best to not to fall further and try hard to climb ur way back up?
If you are answer is " Yes, I will try my best to save myself till the last minute of my breath holding to some rock or branch and hang on till I get some help from someone .. shout to get some help "
Than I would say you must do the same even now also, as you falling into the clutches of maya.
what you should do to save yourself?
You must call for help more and more.. do more chanting to attract attention of Krsna seek help!.. Hey Krishna save me, Hey Krishna save m, . Pls. protect me. I am falling. Help me give your hand of help to me. Lift me up from this fallen condition. This should be your prayer isn't it?
You are a part of Krishna time and again we are saying you are a part and parcel of Krishna. Which means you belong to Krishna so how can Krishna be happy neglecting you or ignoring you.
Just like if you have a wound on your finger. the finger is seeking the attention showing pain. So that you will apply medicine to it.
Similarly when a part of Krishna ( that is you) is in pain will Krishna just let you go if you seek His attention??
Krishna loves you way more then what you love Him. He is always ready to help the fallen soul. He will send some help to you in some form to come out of maya. Only thing needed here is your earnest desire to seek help.
I want to get cured. I want to become healthy again ( now you are diseased because you are in maya)., I want to save myself.. If this desire is strong. You will call for help. And Krishna will reach out to you.
The helping hand of Krishna is not seen. The help comes in many ways to you. If you keep ur eyes open you can sense its Krishna's help for lifting you from wretched state.
PS:- ( Here the tree branch or boulder which you will lean on or hold on to for support are devotees and guru when you are falling from the cliff)

Thanks.. It seems like maya and the Asuras is like Narasima chasing his tail. It's all Krsna Lila I guess. I must be the wind that makes me strong like a tree or plant. Hare Krsna!
I don't even know for sure if Narasima has a tail but I guess it would be like that if he had one. Hare Krsna!
