Worship in festivals

Hare Krishna. All glories to Srila prabhupada. Our family has been practicing Krishna consciousness and following the 4 regulative principles.my father chants 16 rounds and my mother chants 4 rounds daily and performs deity worship.(to makhan Krishna).my mother asked me to ask this question.Question is that although knowing that Krishna is the supreme personality of Godhead and there is no need to perform worship to demigods, yet there are certain festivals other than Vaishnava festivals in Hindu culture like navratri, karva chauth, ahoi astmi and mahashivratri.so should we observe any fasting on these festivals and perform traditions such as 'kanya pujan' on navratri and performing Abhisheka to shivling as per customs? Please forgive me if I have committed any mistake.Hari bol!!!Your's servantDevanssh Agarwal.

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

Thank you for asking this question.

As per our customs, there are few festivals which come during the year. For navratri, we don't do anything. Durga devi is Mayadevi, the jailor of this material world (durg).

For Shivratri, we fast - this fast is specifically for the pratham vaishnav - Shivji. Meaning, we are not fasting as if Shivji is the supreme God, but like how we do all our vaishnav fasts - for appearance and disappearance days. Some people do half day fasting, then grain prasadam, some do full day fasting, then non grains. Depends on time place.

Ahoi ashtmi - i don't know what this is.

The basic principle is - we will fast for Krsna and His devotees. If we fast on say Hanuman Jayanti or Shivratri, it is a vaishnav fast - half day fasting. We are not asking for anything from any demigod under any circumstances - we simply pray for devotion from them. LIke how Katyayani pastime took place, I am sure you know.

    Haribol,

    Your servant,

    Radha Rasamayi DD
