    Hare Krishna Prabhuji,

I am very fallen, not qualified to reply to you. After the detailed explanation given by H.G. Gaur Gadadhar Das, there is not much to add.

Chant the mantra in the order it is given by Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya, and in a mala, can u make out which is the first manka and the last manka. in the same manner, in continous chanting, it does not matter what you chant first, its a circle.

Motivate for chanting - once you realise how chanting has changed you, you will not stop chanting.

When I started chanting, I was told that the day you dont eat AND the day you dont sleep is the day you dont chant. Its like eating - we eat thrice everyday, still we need to eat the next day. Same way chanting, we should chant everyday.

In Sree/Ramanuja Sampradaya, please correct me if I am wrong, the instuctions given to chant Maha Mantra, wherein, Hare Rama Hare Rama.... first and Hare Krishna after.

They are both correct. Narad Muni, gives once Rama Nama to Valmiki, as "Ma Ra" (because he was unable to say "Ra Ma")and tells him to repeat continuously without stopping. Ma Ra when repeated over and over, becomes Rama. Purification of Valmiki by repeating the word "MaRa" has proved that repeating MaRa and RaMa are both purifying.

Same way, Chanting Hare Krishna first or Hare Rama first, give the same association of the Lord.

If you must know what is the absolute Correct way to chant Mahamantra, here it is:

The beginning of MahaMantra starts with Guru Pranam and then Caitanya mantra,

"Sree Krishna Caitanya Prabhu Nityananda, Sri Advaita Gadhadhar Srivas Adi Gaur Bhakta Vrinda"

    and only then, Mahamantra.

  • Hare Krishna,

The real meaning or purport of Mahamanatra is so vast that with our limited capacity it is very very difficult to understand. Whatever I have read in "The ART of Chanting Book" by HH Mahanidhi Swami Maharaj is very very heavy for a materially entangled living entity like me to digest. However, among many purports given by various great achayras I somehow try to relate myself TWO of them while chanting:

    1. Purport of Srila Prabhupad: Not elaborating as every body knows.
    2. Purport of Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur: According to him RAM means RAMETI RAM i.e. RADHA RAMAN RAM i.e Lord Krishna    Himself who gives the highest transcendental pleasure to Radha Rani.  So Hare Krishna Mahamantra is 100% Radha Krishna lila.

That means with non-stop chanting of Mahamantra with 100% absorption in Krishna Lila (through fixed focus on HEARING the transcendental vibration) one can naturally ignore the material tag of FIRST & LAST as from spiritual point of view these tags do not have any significance. Because KRISHNA and attainment of Krishna prem through this japa is absolute.

Please forgive me and correct me if I commit any mistake.

One can chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna first or

Hare Rama Hare Rama first... it does not matter..

As long as you never stop chanting the Maha Mantra.

    ----

One should force onself to chant. No other way.

We are suffering from this disease called material imprisonment and association.

Medicine for that is chanting of Holy Names of God.

Medicine is bitter in the beginning. We must continue to take it. As time goes on, the medicine will become sweeter and sweeter.

Its like if you are suffering from Jaundice. The medicine for that is glucose(sugar), which is sweet by nature, however, is bitter to a person suffering from this disease.

He must continue to take the medicine, in this case sugar even though it tastes bitter. As he gets cured, slowly, he will start tasting the sugar sweeter and sweeter.

re: what should one think while chanting (japa?)

Just chant loudly and listen to your own chanting. Louder you chant the more you can focus. Do it very attentively. Best before 6:30 am and after 2:30 am.

Just listen attentively to your own chanting. The Name of Krishna is one and the same as Krishna.

    • Jai Shri Krishna..

Dear Shravan Prabhuji, I was missing you..  What kept you away?  Nice to see you!

I personally feel that since the Maha Mantra was introduced to us via Jagat Guru Srila Prabhupad the way it was, I feel that the order should not be changed.  We should not change what the most perfect Krishna Devotee has passed on to us.

Thank you prabhu. Same here. Weather has been really good(not rainy) and I have been going out on Sankirtana.

Anyway, I do agree with you. We must chant Maha Mantra as we have been given by our Acharyas.

  • hare krishna  in the days  of  Chaitnya mahaprabhu the first mantra was rectied only by brahmins and mahaprabhu wanted all to chant the holy name and when this was opposed the LORD reversed the reciting  with Krishna name  ad Krishna is the supreme Lord, this is what i heard during one of the satsang i stand corrected if any other view is also held by other devotees
    • This is correct Prabhu. Even I can't recollect the source. But it was in one of the lectures at Iskon.
    •  rao raghvendra prabhu ji,  even i have read the same explaination in isckon literature. can't exactly remember where.

  • Many reasons - but I think the most important are 1) Lord Krsna is the Supreme personaility of Godhead and Ram here refers to Balaram ( Sankarshan). 2)Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has Instructed us to chant this way ( taught to us by HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada) and we follow what our Guru says.

One can motivate oneself by taking a vow to chant a minimum number of rounds. The beauty of this chanting is that once you take this vow, Lord Krsna would ensure that we remember this and make us restless if have not completed the rounds and try to hit the bed.

We can think of the deity form of Krsna and Radha ( any of the temples - I think of seeing the Deity form of Radha Madhava of Sridham Mayapur)
