Factually He is the only Male. All His direct expansions right up to Ksirodhakasayi Vishnu (Bhagavan Sankarshana. Not Mula Sankarshana) are all Male. Rest of all His emanations are Gopis (it is not technically correct to call them females).
He is the only true Lover and all the rest are Loved and in that reciprocation they love beyond His own loving capabilities.
Both the lover and the loved keep excelling each other constantly. That is why true "n" Sat Chit Ananda is never achieved in any of the rasas including dasya. The served and the servitor also excel each other even in inverse proportions and vice versa.
Srimati Radha Rani's Love for Krishna Bhagavan is the ultimate love while all other loving acts/rasas are acting in tandem. The amount of contours added and value additions done in the direction of enhancing that Divine Ultimate Love/Rasa are also separately enjoyed by both the Enjoyer and the Enjoyed in isolation and collectively at the same time.
There was this instance when Mira Bai mate visited some ashram where it was told to Her that it is only for men and women are not allowed a darshan of the deity etc. She immediately questioned as to who are these false claimers masquerading around as men while there is only One Man. The Ashram Head immediately surrendered himself unto Her divine feet in apologies.
So the concept of man and woman is totally only a mundane pair while the Divine pairs are the Man and His Gopis.
His divine grace, A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, has given explanations on this topic in several books, especially in the Srimad Bhagavatam.
From the Srimad Bhagavatam:
"The development of conjugal love for Krishna is not manifested in women only. The material body has nothing to do with spiritual loving affairs. A woman may develop an attitude for becoming a friend of Krsna, and similarly, a man may develop the feature of becoming a gopi in Vrindavana. How a devotee in the form of a man can desire to become a gopi is stated in the Padma Purana as follows: In days gone by there were many sages in Dandakaranya. Dandakaranya is the name of the forest where Lord Ramachandra lived after being banished by His father for fourteen years. At that time, there were many advanced sages who were captivated by the beauty of Lord Ramachandra and who desired to become women in order to embrace the Lord. They knew that although Ramachandra was an ideal king and could not accept more than one wife, Lord Krsna, being the full-fledged Personality of Godhead, could fulfill the desires of all of them in Vrndavana. Lord Ramchandra remained silent, and His silence shows that He accepted the prayers of the sages. Thus, they were blessed by Lord Ramachandra to have association with Lord Krsna in their future lives. "
"Conjugal love is divided into two classifications - namely, conjugal love as husband and wife and conjugal love as lover and beloved. One who develops conjugal love for Krsna as wife is promoted to Dwaraka, where the devotee becomes the queen of the Lord. One who develops conjugal love for Krsna as a lover is promoted to Goloka Vrndavana, to associate with the gopis and enjoy loving affairs with Krsna there. We should carefully note, however, that this conjugal love for Krsna, either as a gopi or as a queen, is not limited to women. Even men can develop such sentiments, as was evidenced by the sages of Dandakaranya."
From the Srimad Bhagavatam first canto:
"The Lord is always described as the parama-purusa, or the supreme male personality. Thus the affection between the Lord and the living entities is something like that between the male and the female. "
From the Srimad Bhagavatam fifth canto:
"Everyone should perfectly understand that Krsna is the real husband of all living entities, who are described in the Bhagavad-gita as prakrti (female), not purusa (male). In Bhagavad-gita (10.12), only Krsna is addressed as purusa:
You are the Supreme Brahman, the ultimate, the supreme abode and purifier, the Absolute Truth and the eternal divine person. You are the primal God, transcendental and original, and You are the unborn and allpervading beauty. Krsna is the original purusa, and the living entities are prakrti. Thus Krsna is the enjoyer, and all living entities are meant to be enjoyed by Him."
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, 4th Canto:
"The wife of King Puranjana was lying on the ground because she was neglected by her husband. Actually the woman must always be protected by her husband. We always speak of the goddess of fortune as being placed on
the chest of Narayana. In other words, the wife must remain embraced by her husband. Thus she becomes beloved and well protected. Just as one saves his money and places it under his own personal protection, one should similarly protect his wife by his own personal supervision. Just as intelligence is always within the heart, so a beloved chaste wife should always have her place on the chest of a good husband. This is the proper relationship between husband and wife."
"If a husband situated in the mode of goodness can control his wife, who is in passion and ignorance, the woman is benefited. Forgetting her natural inclination for passion and ignorance, the woman becomes obedient and faithful to her husband, who is situated in goodness. Such a life becomes very welcome. The intelligence of the man and woman may then work very nicely together, and they can make a progressive march toward spiritual realization.
Otherwise, the husband, coming under the control of the wife, sacrifices his quality of goodness and becomes subservient to the qualities of passion and ignorance. In this way the whole situation becomes polluted."
From the Srimad Bhagavatam first canto:
" Unscrupulous persons go immediately to the Tenth Canto and especially to the five chapters which describe the Lord's rasa dance. This portion of the Srimad-Bhagavatam is the most confidential part of this great literature. Unless one is thoroughly accomplished in the transcendental knowledge of the Lord, one is sure to misunderstand the Lord's worshipable transcendental pastimes called rasa dance and His love affairs with the gopis. This subject matter is highly spiritual, and only the liberated persons who have gradually attained to the stage of paramahamsa can transcendentally relish this rasa dance."
