Which is the Gayatri Mantra?

HARE KRISHNA! The first sloka of SB is

oḿ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya

janmādy asya yato 'nvayād itarataś cārtheṣv abhijñaḥ svarāṭ

tene brahma hṛdā ya ādi-kavaye muhyanti yat sūrayaḥ

tejo-vāri-mṛdāḿ yathā vinimayo yatra tri-sargo 'mṛṣā

dhāmnā svena sadā nirasta-kuhakaḿ satyaḿ paraḿ dhīmahi

 Srila Prabhupada explains in the purport that the slokas of most of the puranas including SB begin with Gayatri Mantra.

The Gayatri Mantra which we all know is completely different. request to remove this confusion.

  • This sloka is not gayatri mantra. This sloka invokes the Brahma gayatri mantra (om bhur bhuvah suvaha.......). Parbhupada specifies in purport that "Therefore, he purposely invokes a Gāyatrī mantra, dhīmahi."

    Also in Chaitanya caritamrta the following is explained by Chaitnaya Mahaprabhu to Prakasananda saraswati

    CC Madhya 25.147: "In the beginning of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam there is an explanation of the Brahma-gāyatrī mantra. 'The Absolute Truth [satyaḿ param]' indicates the relationship, and 'we meditate [dhīmahi] on Him' indicates the execution of devotional service and the ultimate goal of life.

  • Om bhu..bhuvaha..suvaha mantra is vEd MAtA GayatrI Mantra(also called GAyatrI mahA mantrA as it is directed to srI krishNA Himself recognizing Him as 'Savitha' (the origin of All) in this mantrA. Here, the mantrA is directed to srI krishnA and the form(metre) is also krishnA as stated in the gItA). However, as krishnA says in gItA that one must approach a guru and learn about Him, similarly one must be initiated to this mantrA by a guru (preferably the father who does this in the presence of the kula AchArya) who initiates the son to the devotion of srI krishnA.

  • ||shrI krishnAh sharanam mama|| || shrI krishna charanau sharanam prapadhyE ||

    Gayatri is one of the primary metres (format that governs length, organization of bija mantras etc.) by which a mantrA can be organized (srI krishnA says that among the mantra metres He is gAyatrI). The foremost GAyatrI mantrA is an invocation to the Supreme Lord Himself with the form of DevI GayatrI (vEda mAthA who blesses us with the realization of Supreme paraBrahma krishnA) to meditate upon when the angAs of the GAyatrI mantra is chanted. It is the foremost mantrA chanted by the brAhmanAs. Any vEdic chant or yagNA is incomplete when gAyatrI is not remembered. A brAhmin, kshatriyA or vaishyA boy at a suitable age is taught the gAyatrI mantrA by a guru. Continuous chanting with reverance to dEvI gAyatrI gives us brahma tEjas, the power/intellect to discern between dharma/adharma, protection from evil and support of lord krishnA. Putting the 4 vedAs in one side of the balance and the gayAtrI on the other lets gAyatrI weigh more proclaiming the greatness of this mantrA. gayatrI recognizes who is OM, salutes the lord and offers prayer all at once in the same mantrA.

    This is different from the kAma gAyatrI by which Lord KrishnA is remembered. Also, the gAyatrI mantrA is not different for different varnAs.

  • HARI BOL PRABHU JI!

    JAI VAISHNAVAS, ACHARAYS, BAHKTI DEVI AND LORD!

    THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GAYATRIS. THERE IS KAMA GAYATRI FOR LORD RADHARAMAN, GAYATRI AT INITIATION, OM BHUR BHUVAH SVAHA.... ALSO. SO, IT MAY BE DIFFERENT ONE.
