for the fulfillment of our material desires we should do something in order to show to Krishna our desire. It is true there are natural desires (material desires according to our varna and ashrama) and they should be fulfilled by the mercy of God.
We can request Devotees to help to fulfill our desire or even Krishna Himself with prayers. Because for this time we are not able to renounce those desires but use them in His service.
But for a Devotee only source of real happiness is the Holy Names of Krishna. And he or she relishes that happiness while chanting the Holy Names attentively hearing Them. But if he or she allows other thoughts brake our attention then we won't be able to relish that love and all other things fail. Because all other things are not enough to make us fully satisfied.
Because of that while chanting the Holy Names we have to be attentive.
For material desires we can pray to Krishna and again, act properly in order to achieve that desire.
And the time when we do not have selfish desire our desires will be fulfilled immediately. The main cause that Krishna is not fulfilling our material desire is that we want enjoy that ourselves which is destructible for spiritual life. Because of that Krishna is very careful in fulfilling desires.

as told by prabhujis above , chanting mahamantra for fulfilling our wishes is offense against harinam. This will hinder your progress in Bhakti, so please avoid that. In this world everybody has miserableyour life and there are people who might have life far miserable than yours. But our miseries are because of our forgetting Krishna only. So if you want your life happy then chant Hare Krishna mahamantra for the pleasure of Krishna only.
Since we have tendency for sense enjoyment and we don't want to serve Krishna thats why we suffer more. And mark my words that this is the only reason of your being unhappy. So engage yourself in Krishna's service as more as possible then only you can be happy.
We want to enjoy individually-this is the root cause of our unhappiness.
Srimad bhagwatam says :
savai pumsam paro dharmo yatho bhaktir adhokshaje
ahaitukya apratihata yaya atma suprasidati
"when jiva will do bhakti of krishna then only he will be happy".

Maha-Mantra japa is not meant to achieve material benefit, doing japa with the desire for material benediction comes under 10 offences in chanting Holy name. One will be throughly frustrated if he chant mahamantra with the purpose of solving material problem. Maha mantra gives the highest benediction to the chanter i.e. Krishna-Prema.
