Hare Krishna,
I have some batch mates who are atheists. I feel like helping them but unfortunately they abuse me when I try to make them understand.
what do you think should people like me do?
Keep quiet and do our own work
or
Try to help and receive the abuses.

One can not teach in a college unless he has acquired necessary degree from a bonafide university. You are in a bonafide university for sure but have u acquired a degree yet is what matters. To the degree we are convinced about Lord Sri Krishna's existence, to that degree we can convince others. If they are getting into abusing mode, it is better to stay away and pray for them. Sincere prayers are answred soon especially when we pray for some one else to come to the Lotus feet of Krishna. So pray for them that Krishna gives them intelligence to come back to him.

Dear Govinda Prabhu,
All devotees are placed in this position whether they are in the temple or out of it. If one is a householder devotee, the chances are that he will meet with many nondevotees who will argue with great vehemence that you are on the wrong path and that they know best. After trying one's level best, slowly and patiently, one should realize that the other person is not ready or just plain aggressive, and become silent without in any way recapitulating. One day he will realize, or if he meets with a higher level of devotee who can manage to convince him, he will realize that you were right. In that case, you have done your job.
The important thing is that we ourselves, the devotees, should continuously project our thoughts and consciousness by our own actions which should be clearly visible to the non devotees. We should continue our chanting and our daily routines undisturbed and coolly.
If the person is not destined to be a devotee in this life, at least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have tried ( your karma ), and Krishna will surely give you brownie points for that.
Jai Shri Krishna..
Totally agree with you mataji, the name of Krishna is so strong that if they don't come around in this life time.. there is always the second, third etc..those that don't hear must feel..Lol
its not appropriate to preach faithless peoples....its a naam aparadha...
judge urself...if u r strong enough to convince them go ahead and do the needful...if u r not so strong at the current moment then just try to acquire complete knowledge and then c to it...only if u save yourself first can u save others...
but above all its best to take guidance from ur guru or someone u r aspired from...thats the best thing to do...
all glories to srila prabhupada
