Japan has got plenty of money. I seriously doubt they need your $1000 or $2000 or what ever amount it may be. Majority of it will get eaten up in administration anyways.

Your charity will go a long way at home in India. I would Offer Prasadam and distribute freely to hungry people locally. That way 100% of the money will go to the cause.

First u decide y u want punya karma ? i mean to say where do u wan to bind yur punya karma in material gain or in bhagvad prapti ? If u chanting LORD'S name isse bada PUNYA KARMA HAI HI NAHI ...... But u feel like to helping in japan relief fund its good but giv yur karma result to LORD VISHNU'S LOTUS FEET....

U know SHRI SUDAMA ? SUDAMAJI was very great Devotee of LORD KRISHNA ...... U know how he had came closed to LORD ? Pichle Janam main SUDAMAJI gareeb brahman the unhone SHRI SATYANARAYAN ka pooja kiya aur uske fal ki ischa kabhi nahi ki ... AISE WOH BHAGWAN KE KAREEB PAHUCHE ....... If you donate to the redcross, Yes. It is Punya Karma.

How ever if you donate to http://www.ffl.org Japan, then the Food distributed, will be offered to the Lord first, and therefore is Akarma.

Your compassion is commendable.

I challenge you to be even MORE compassionate. Real problems of spirit soul are rebirth, oldage, disease and death. The solution for this is Harinam.

Both Vikarma and Punya Karma are binding the soul to the material body. Perform only Akarma, which is liberating.

In Krishna Book Ch 7, Srila Prabhupada explains as follows:

The gopis assembled there spoke among themselves: “What sort of austerities and penances we must have undergone in our previous lives! We must have worshiped the Supreme Personality of Godhead, offered different kinds of sacrifices, made charities and performed many welfare activities for the public, such as growing banyan trees and excavating wells. As a result of these pious activities, we have gotten back our child, even though He was supposed to be dead. Now He has come back to enliven His relatives.” After observing such wonderful happenings, Nanda Mahäräja began to think of the words of Vasudeva again and again.

In Ch 52, Rukmini prays to Krishna as follows:

My dear Lord, in my previous life I may have done public welfare work like digging wells and planting trees, or pious activities such as performing ritualistic ceremonies and sacrifices and serving superiors like the spiritual master, brähmanas and Vaishnavas. By these activities, perhaps I have pleased the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Näräyana. If this be so, then I wish that You, Lord Krishna, the brother of Lord Balaräma, please come here and catch hold of my hand so that I shall not be touched by Shishupäla and his company.’

From the above, we can understand that social well fare activities like digging well, planting shady trees at the road side etc are called pious activities.

Best type of pious activities are activities in Krishna consciousness.

Srila Prabhupada explains as follows:

So therefore this is the best welfare activity to the human society, to awaken them to Krishna consciousness so that they will again revive their original svaccha consciousness.......
